Changing categories of expenses
I wanted to move a batch of expenses from one category (gardening) to another (house improvements) but the bank account remains the same
If I
- open the gardening category
- select the batch change category and change to house improvements
It changes the bank account so the transaction now appears in gardening and house improvements but not in the bank account screwing up the bank account and expenses.
It appears that "account" is just a type of "category" field?
Suggestions
1 Is there a view where I can see all the parameters associated with a transaction (e.g. the "account" and "category" assigned?
2 With a batch change to a category would a warning message be helpful if the account was being changed instead?
Moving expenses to a different catagory is
I assume this is because "catagory" in the Catagory view is

Yes. Categories are account.
BACKUP FIRST.
If you are viewing the category register then you have to batch change the account (the opposite of what you think)
Or just use the find & replace extension.
right click a txn in the register and select show record details to see a txn’s setup (but it won’t help much).

Thanks for responding so quickly and confirming that when I am in the category view I need to batch change "account" to change the category not change “category”. If this is not intuitive would a warning message when batch changing the category help?
In case it helps anyone else with this problem I was able to find the other mistakes I have made by:
- Producing the income and expenditure:detailed report - Saving as a Tab Delimited file (works better than comma separated) - Opening in excel - Filtering and deleting rows where the category contains the word "total"
Filtering account column to see all the rows that were blank and checking to see that these items should be to a bank account
For American Express cards the card number is in the Transaction so it is easy to allocate to the correct account, unfortunately my Mastercard and bank accounts does not have a reference in the transaction to indicate which account they come from.
This may also explain some of the reconciliation problems I had in the past?
