Full function Moneydance for iPad - PLEASE!

Hi. I've been using Moneydance to manage my money for around 17 years now and despite a few niggles and occasional bugs I find it excellent, allowing me to keep full control of my finances and all my accounts.

I started using it on Linux and then for the last 12 years on MacOS.

Many years ago I tried the mobile version for iOS and found it so limited, and so difficult to use (especially for split transactions and currencies) that I gave up on it. At the time I suppose I felt perhaps I was expecting too much in wanting more function on a small mobile device.

However, iPads (especially recent M-powered 13 inch models) are now just as capable and powerful as many laptops, yet we still have a really second rate Moneydance app., which I therefore don't use at all. It would be so good if you could develop a full-function iPad version with the same functionality and UI as the MacOS version.

Is there any chance we you may bring out a full-function iPad version sometime soon? If it is good enough, I would be willing to pay to have it available on my iPad - especially when travelling without my Mac.

Thank you.

+1 to improving the mobile apps. In the current form, they unfortunately seem like an afterthought to the desktop versions. Some fixes I'd like to see:
    1. Cross-account search. Currently you can only search within a particular account. I'd like to see a full search across all accounts, just like on the desktop app. Use case: I am want to find a credit card purchase; I know the retailer name but don't remember which cc I put it on. Seems like this should be a simple enhancement
    2. Support for investment accounts, especially those accounts that are used simply as checking account replacements (eg, Fidelity's cash management account). Right now you can't even view these transactions, let alone edit them.
    3. Online account download (eg, Moneydance+ functionality)
    4. Split category transactions when entering a transaction

As the OP posted, right now the mobile app is nowhere near a replacement for the desktop version. Would love to see that change as I spend more and more time traveling with my ipad sans laptop

I'm sure lots of people have requested this before. I use my iPad on a daily basis, taking it with me to the office, or traveling, because it's so portable, has the drawing, design and writing features I use, and I can use it anywhere. I could really use full functionality on the iPad rather than abbreviated functionality that's currently available.

Been using Moneydance for over 15 years, and have every intention to keep using it, but having to go back my laptop for full functionality, or goof around with some remote desktop login to access the full Moneydance features is tedious.

    I’m a fellow Moneydance customer

I typically get involved in testing new versions of Moneydance and these are my personal observations.

There is a project in progress to expand the capability on mobile devices i.e. those running IOS and Android.

Prior to Moneydance 2022 the language that Moneydance was written in, although supported on Desktop systems like Windows, macOS and Linux was not supported on the mobile O/S. So while it was relatively easy to support Moneydance across all desktop operating systems, the language used is not supported, and would not be supported, on the mobile platforms, i.e. IOS and Android. Thus the mobile applications were really separate platforms, with totally different code bases.

You may have read about when syncing was extended to sync all data as being one step on the road to a more complete mobile application.

With Moneydance 2023, users did not see much in the way of changes to Moneydance, however this was a big update under the hood, this update involved a significant portion of the Moneydance core code being ported to a new language which not only supports the traditional desktop systems but also supports the mobile platforms.

Sean and the testers spent a lot of time getting Moneydance 2023 where not only had a considerable amount of this porting has been completed but also to make sure there were no regressions in the software, I believe this was achieved.

With Moneydance 2024 more Moneydance modules were progressively rewritten in the language that is supported on these Operating Systems, and again much of the testing that has been done is to ensure there is no regression.

We are getting closer to the point where additional capability can be bought into the mobile platforms.

So there is a goal to have a more complete solution on mobiles and especially on tablet type devices. Given their inherent limitations it is hard to say just how far you could go on devices like smartphones, their relatively small screen size is an inherent limitation.

There was never going to be a quick and easy solution with the mobile applications, it was always going to require a lot of work, time and effort, with a lot of incremental changes as we move down the path. It also has to be made sure that all platforms can be supported with limited resources, which in practical terms means having a lot of common code.

There is no timeline on this work, there is still much to be done. The Infinite Kind typically do not discuss futures.

DWG: many thanks for that. It makes a lot of sense to me as I know MD was written in Java and that is not available on iOS or iPadOS. I'm curious to know what language they are moving to in order to make it portable to iPad. Python perhaps??

Awyway, it's great to hear they have a development direction that should get them there, and I completely understand why they're not committing to any particularly date for it.

One note: there does already exist various Java Runtime Environments for Android, and so while I would pay money for an Android application which I could use on my Pixel 9 Pro Fold, I would pay more money for an iPad application since the screen on my iPad is larger and more useful than even the unfolded P9PF.

Especially with iPadOS 26, and given that I can use Termius so I can login back to my Linux desktop, Moneydance is the one remaining application which would allow me to significantly cut back when I would need to carry my MacBook Air M2 while I am travelling,
