Reminder/Calendar Functionality
Reminder/Calendar Issues:
1. In Quicken if I had a recurring reminder set for a specific
transaction I had the ability to override the next scheduled
transaction and change the date or change the amount of that one
occurance without affecting the overall recurring transaction. Is
there a way to do this in MoneyDance? I only see where I can defer
the reminder, but that doesn't seem to allow me to defer it to a
specific date or to change the amount of that one occurrence.
-
The reminder calendar doesn't seem to know when I've paid one of the reminders. It grays it out but it leaves it on the original day and the amount is the original reminder amount. If I record a reminder and I enter a different date and a different amount then the calendar should show that that reminder was paid on that date and the amount it was actually paid.
-
It would be very helpful if the reminder calendar was able to show a daily balance for a specified account. The user could pick the account, say your checking account, and then the calendar would show the daily balance of that account at the bottom of each day, taking into account the balance in the checking account for that day and the reminders that are scheduled to be paid/had been paid that day from that account. This would allow the user to easily see the running balance and cash flow of the account.

One other thing that would be really nice. For credit cards it would be a really handy feature if you could set the amount of the reminder for paying a credit card to pay the current balance. In Quicken it has a flag on the credit card type account to pay off balance each month. Then when a scheduled payment is set up it automatically sets the amount each month to the current balance of the card. That would also help in cash flow projections.

Another feature that I think would be useful would be if repeating reminders could automatically update the amount based upon a criteria. For instance, if there was an option when setting up a reminder to set the amount equal to the average of the last x number of payments. This could be variable in number. If you set it equal to 1 then the amount of the next and future payments would be set to the amount of the last payment.
This, along with the earlier suggestion for the credit card amounts (2nd 9/15 post) would make the cash flow projections more accurate.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the suggestions!
Regarding the first one, you can edit a reminder right before it goes out, but you can't edit future ones so I have created a ticket for this.
Regarding two and three; personally I would consider these two a bit redundant and possibly cluttering things, but I know that you and possibly others might like these so I've created a ticket for them and I would encourage others to speak up if this is something interesting.
Regarding the last two suggestions, there are pre-existing suggestion tickets for these and I have attached them to this thread.
Thanks so much!
Sincerely,

Hi Kevin,
If you don't mind installing third-party extensions there's one that does cashflow forecasting. It would solve a couple of the issues you mentioned.

I did get that forecaster and it's great. It does help quite a bit.
However, regarding the other suggestions, my numbering in the post got screwed up:
In post 1
For 1, the editing of reminders. I know I can edit the reminder when I actually record it, but that isn't the same as editing the reminder to enter the actual date I am going to pay it or the actual amount for that one occurrence.
For the next one (also 1), the calendar knowing when a reminder has been paid. Currently it doesn't change the date of the reminder instance that I just paid, if I pay it on an earlier or later date than the reminder is set for. It just leaves the reminder on the original date and shows the original amount, not the amount I actually paid. For example my Discover reminder is set for the 8th of each month and is set to $350. This last payment I made on the 3rd for $900. The reminder calendar doesn't show that I paid on the 3rd or the correct amount. It still shows the 8th and $3590, greyed out.
For the daily balance item (2): The forecaster extension does seem to satisfy this, though having the account balance on the calendar would be helpful.
In post 2
This item and the item in post 3 kind of go hand in hand. Being able to flag a credit card account as "pay the balance each month" would allow the reminder to update each month's payment amount for that card to the balance of the card.
Post 3 allows the reminders to be setup to automatically update each month's instance to the average of a set number of previous payments. I think this would allow the cash flow to be more accurate.
Thanks for the follow up.

Has there been anything on any of these suggestions for the Calendar and reminders?
I would also like to suggest that one time reminder, after they have executed should be removed from the reminder list. That list keeps getting longer and longer. There doesn't appear to be any reason to keep the ones that have executed in the list. All executed reminders, actually even repeating ones, should be removed from the list and the calendar. that way only active, upcoming reminders would be shown.
I'd really like to see some of these suggestions implemented. Like being able to update the next occurrence of the recurring reminder to change the date/amount for that one occurrence and have it show on the calendar. this would not affect future occurences of that repeating reminder. Also, the one in comment post #2 to be able to set a credit card to pay the current balance rather than having to enter a fixed amount. Also, comment #3 to be able to set the projected amount based on a criteria or average value.

Hi Kevin C,
These items haven't been implemented yet and I don't have a timeline for when they will be at this time, so I can't say when they'll be available.

Hi Kevin,
I recently added a Credit Card Reminders feature to the Forecaster.
Its a little bit experimental at the moment but it seems to work fine for the case where you pay off the full balance of the credit card each month.
Cheers,
Kevin

Hi Kevin C.
Yet another Kevin here. :)
You can download the latest version of Kevin Stembridge's excellent Forecaster extension here:
https://bitbucket.org/kevinstembridge/moneydance-forecaster/downloads
Older versions are still available at the link that he provided in his post # 5 of this thread.

I'll check it out. Does this new forecaster change the monthly amount of the credit card reminder to show the current actual balance as the amount to pay?
Thanks

Hi Kevin C,
Look to this thread. Post # 11 is where Kevin S. introduces the new version of the Forecaster and some subsequent questions are asked and answered.

Hi Kevin C,
When you setup a credit card reminder you specify the statement day and the payment day of the credit card. The forecaster will then show a transaction on the payment day for the amount that was forecasted on the previous statement day. Hope that makes sense.
Also, Kevin N, Sean has reviewed and signed the extension, so it should be available from the Manage Extensions dialog now. You've just reminded me that I need to update the docs on the wiki.
Cheers,
Kevin

Hi Kevin S.
Ah! I saw that you were inquiring on how to get your extension approved. I see now that it has been.
I like the change from multiple buttons to the new menus. The window fits the screen better minus the buttons.
Nice work!

Hi Kevin S.,
Just as an FYI, the link to 'Bitbucket' on http://code.google.com/p/moneydance-forecaster/ links to a login page at Bitbucket, instead of the project page.
I was wondering if that may have been intentional since Bitbucket doesn't really seem like a place for the non-programmer.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realise that it required a login.
BitBucket is definitely targeted towards developers. Google Code is also developer-centric but it seems they are happy to accept anonymous users.
Now that the extension is available from Moneydance most people won't ever need to go to the site hopefully.

Kevin S. I installed the new forecaster. I'm not sure what it's supposed to do. I set my credit card info up in the reminder table and enabled it. I also removed the original MoneyDance reminder. I see the forecast showing a zero balance on the day, but where do I see the reminder transaction? Does the forecaster just automatically enter a transaction into my checking account on the day of the payment or what? What if I decide in a particular month that I don't want to pay the entire balance but make a different payment?
18 Posted by Kevin Stembridg... on May 23, 2013 @ 09:58 PM
Hi Kevin,
Sorry, there isn't any integration with Moneydance's transaction reminders. I discuss why I haven't done this in the thread that Kevin N linked to in post 12 above. I create a 'general reminder' (as opposed to a transaction reminder) to remind me when the payment is due, but the amount of the payment is only known to the forecaster.
There are also some comments on the other thread about early payments. In your case, there is no way to specify in advance that you are not going to pay off the full balance. However, when the payment day passes, the forecaster will still calculate the correct payment for next month because it uses the current balance as its starting point.
I fully admit there are some gaps in functionality. I'm limited in what I can do by the amount of time I have to spend on it and by the integration points that Moneydance exposes. But it seems to work ok for the simple use case where the full balance is paid off each month. I'm hoping it will be of use to some people as it is.
19 Posted by Kevin C on May 23, 2013 @ 10:08 PM
I guess it won't work for me. Too bad, it does make the forecast more accurate. I'l go back to the comment in post #2 of this thread and ask if there's any way that MoneyDance will create a way to set credit card accounts to "Pay off balance monthly"? That would be the best way to do it.
Thanks for your help and time.

Yep, I agree. I'd love to see this as a built-in feature too.
21 Posted by Kevin C on Aug 18, 2013 @ 10:24 AM
I've been using the forecaster extension. which I really find useful. I like the new credit card "pay balance" feature, however, there really needs to be a way for it to somehow know when I've made the actual payment for the month. Currently, until the pay date set in the extension goes by it shows a double payment and really screws up the balances. The only thing I can do is disable that card's balance feature until the pay date goes by. What a pain!
I really wish that Moneydance would make this a built-in feature for credit cards. It's so useful!

Hi guys,
I'm a new convert to Moneydance from Quicken 2011, and I'm stuck just like Kevin C. The main reason I use MD (and Quicken) is to forecast the running balance in my checking account so I don't go negative when my credit card auto payments for the total balance get posted. Kevin S.'s Forecaster extension is in the right direction, but when I reconcile the credit card accounts and enter the upcoming payment into the checking account register, the Forecaster double counts the payment (counting the actual payment along with the reminder payment, which is still in place). Am I doing something wrong?
