Hi
Just wondering what other users might most want? Me, sidebar report organisation using folders, Reminders List on homepage..bold bright text for title / description, paler low key colour for next occurrence, much easier to pick out the one reminder you are looking for. I am sure I could come up with more, just two off the top of my head.

Regarding Fidelity, you wrote: "The Fidelity interface with Plaid and the Moneydance Plus servers has been resolved with Sean's efforts with Fidelity. That is official." Respectfully, that's not the case. As I noted earlier, in December 2025, the direct connection with Fidelity stopped working.

At that time, Fidelity had categorically stated that they would not support Plaid. Since Fidelity has walked back that statement and categorically said that they intend to support plaid for the foreseeable future there is no point in making a direct connection. I would say that it is beyond my knowledge if the issues of supporting MD direct connection became burdensome to Fidelity that they decided to support Plaid. Or maybe it was the MD users pressuring Fidelity because they value MD that Sean developed. Either way Fidelity is supported and Sean's efforts are probably part of that. I would hope and assume that Sean has dropped the direct connection to Fidelity project.

Yeah, TIK has spent some time with both Sean and Maddy trying to get the vendor to fix search so there isn't lack of attention. They could drop everything else and make that high priority but I personally would rather have forum user support and work on that next Alpha/Beta/Release software than to dick with a little hiccup in the forum search. Forum migration would bring everything to a halt for a few months so it better be a good reason.

All engineering, software and otherwise is a tradeoff on putting efforts into different things. I disagree with your priorities, and you disagree with Sean's. You admit that there is action but that it isn't towards your defined goals. And as you have admitted that there are action plans, so it isn't just wishes. But you haven't gotten the products that you prioritize when you want them. As I said in other words, when MD becomes big enough to hire 3 more full time developers then your schedule might be satisfied.

All I hear is a bunch of 3rd party apologists trying to defend Moneydance for no discernible reason. Instead of doing so, why not join the growing crowd of users who paid good money for a product that seems abandoned at worst or ignored at best?

More importantly, why doesn’t TIK defend itself? I never hear from any one there.

Sean appears to be some remote mountain top figure too busy or too detached to communicate with us.

As to having to hire 3 more developers- really? That is just a tacit admission that things aren’t going well.

I went through this with Delicious Monster. This is not a great business model.

    @James,

Well we are all 3rd party here except those with an orange bar. So some of us are "apologists" to you and some I think are 3rd party complainers to me. It is just a matter of perspective and a penchant for name calling. Actually in thinking about it, as users we are second party, 3rd party folks would be neither developers or users. TIK could spend its efforts responding to every demand in the forums, but I would rather the efforts went towards the next release, but YMMV.

At the moment, unlike Delicious Monster, MD continues to function in all ways as it did when you purchased it with that good money.

You knew, or should have known, when you purchased the software that it was from a small independent developer. It is incredibly cheap for the capabilities and support it provides. If you want multiple updates and fast response in forums, and personal attention to the bugs and issues people have, then TIK would need a larger staff, that is not and admission of failure that is asking for a different business model.

Yes, I also got burned by the product abandonment by Delicious Monster and would love to find a good replacement. However, I was never under the impression that I had a contract for DM to support their software eternally through changes in the market and cessation other web services that it depended on. That continuity is something that a small developer can't assure.

However, in contrast, competitor software (Q) still exists but now necessarily moves all your information onto the web. So the name is the same but that software is abandoned under the "classic" moniker while the former "Mint" has been renamed to "Q". WTF, is that actual maintenance or just throwing up a cheap replacement. TIK has shown loyalty in producing the software and upgrades for about 2 decades and to just wildly claim that the software seems to be abandoned really seems to be jumping to conclusions.

As an "apologist" I have personally heard from Sean on the things he is working on and his hopes for getting out at least an alpha (it is wise not to go directly to beta!). I was trying to convey this information to folks interested on this thread without name calling and vitriol. I don't see that TIK has abandoned MD in any way or form. Delicious Monster that was referenced, did a public release of the information when it was discontinued so that is not really a valid precedent.

The forums here have been remarkable in their civility and helpfulness and impressive in the knowledge and help from many long term users. I would hate to see that change.

As for the mobile apps, Sean has been working on making them full featured for almost 3 years. His methodology is to basically shift the code base from java to kotlin. Given the code base size this has been a large and arduous task [I'd assume the current code would be abandoned, so he'd also have to come up with something to make mobile full featured without the same space - that's my opinion - i don't know.]

That has taken a lot of Sean's time, but it is totally under the covers, so doesn't come across as work or progress. My concern, as time goes on, is that it might end up as an unfinished project like the investment transaction merge feature that has hung around forever.

To follow some of your conjectures/beliefs, Sean has seemed to have less energy in the last year or so for MD, and as the current sole developer (there have been others in the past), he may be dealing with some burnout.

As 'third party users', we've encouraged Sean to continue, while recognizing that the energy strength of one is the primary driver for improvement, and that all of our own 'third party efforts' - extensions, suggestions, testing - go through him.
Negativity on our part isn't going to help matters.

As I understand it Kotlin can co-exist with Java, so it should be possible to progressively port the modules, I believe that is the approach Sean has been taking.

    Hi all,

Yes the conversion to kotlin has been an ongoing process, and hasn't been happening all at once. The most important code is already migrated, so the rest of it is not a high priority, so I'm only converting when significantly changing certain source files.

As for overall progress, I'm working on Moneydance every day, with development spread across the iOS, Android, and desktop apps. The Android app has been the most overdue, and that is now very close. A new desktop version is also nearing completion.

I have always aimed to release one major update each year. I'm obviously behind, with no MD2025 or MD2026 release so far, but there will be a new major release this year.

I know everyone is looking forward to new features and improvements. A major release also means an upgrade fee for around half of our customers, so I always want to make sure it's worthwhile before asking people to pay. From the comments here, it’s clear many of you are ready for the next release, so I'll do my best to get it into your hands as soon as I can.

    Thanks,
    Sean

@peter3 - in applications, rename moneydance to monetydance 5253, and the alpha download (at the moment to 5504. do not use live data on 5504 yet, but you can use a very recent backup = it will feel live. but be careful with alpha software

    Hi Peter,
I wouldn't run the alpha version unless 1) there is something about 2024.4 which is really difficult or impossible to do, or 2) you really enjoy testing software and don't mind the extra hassle of maintaining separate versions of moneydance on your computer and making sure that you don't accidentally open your live data with the alpha version.

If you would like to keep the alpha and stable versions of Moneydance on your computer you should first run the stable version, then select the Window -> Welcome to Moneydance menu, and in the window that appears, where it says "When Starting" choose "Open This Window". That will prompt you to choose which data file you'd like to open and also show you the version of monedance that is running.

Also, instead of using live data, as dtd mentioned you can open a recent backup of your live data and give it a very different name. When opening the backup in the new version, make sure to turn OFF the checkbox to "keep sync settings from original file". If you don't turn off that checkbox, then the alpha version will affect your synced data which will affect your real data file.

    Thanks,
    Sean

... in addition (on Mac), after installation, I rename my applications from "Moneydance.app" to things like "\Applications\Moneydance 2026.0 (5504).app"

There are similar methods that can be used for Windows (etc) but with folder names.

Then you can launch whichever version you want...

One thing about having multiple versions of Moneydance installed on your computer (be it mac, windows, or linux), is that you have to make sure that you don't ever have two different versions running at the same time. That goes quadruple for not opening the same data file at the same time!

Many thanks to all who responded and for the advice given.

I used to do a lot of beta testing for a number of companies a few years back and, looking at the advice given, it certainly seemed more straightforward back then!!

I'll give it some thought before continuing.

(Mac Alpha testing hints) Yes, create a new account, put the MD application in a folder called "Applications" in your HOME directory. (Create folder since it won't exist in a new account)

Then drag that alpha version to your Dock and launch it from there so you are not mixing the main version of MD from your other accounts that may be in the shared application folder.

Make a new copy of your data from your old account and put it in your new account Documents folder.

You will have to reinstall any extensions you need in the new account and update the settings for your preferences but you are good to go.

Any time line on when the final version will be released? I was going to upgrade my MD but since a new release is releasing soon, might as well wait.

@Kent, only a few folks are testing the Alpha, and I would suppose the Beta so give it at least a couple of months until release. But that is just a SWAG and it all depends on how the testing goes and if effort is spent to bring the iOS/Android versions update as well. There have been 2 updates to the Alpha already so that is progress.

Bottom line, "nobody knows for sure".
