Moving transactions between accounts of different currency

Moving transactions using batch change is a great feature. However it does not allow change to an account of different currency. Its a pity. As a hardcore multi-currency user this need always arises from having simply entered one or more transactions in the wrong account, ans thus also the wrong currency. No clever exchange rate logic is needed here ... just copy the transaction amount entered across. Thus 50 EUR moved to a GBP account will change to 50 GBP ... exactly what is needed to correct the mistake.

    Hi David,
Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Moneydance doesn’t allow Batch Change to move transactions into an account with a different currency because the transaction’s currency is defined by the account itself. Moving it would require recreating the transaction in a new currency, which the current Batch Change tool isn’t designed to do. Although it may be useful for correcting mistakes, especially for multi‑currency users, it isn’t supported at the moment.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

    • For the time being, in order to change currencies in a specific account/category, you should follow the instruction below:

Navigate to "Extensions->Manage Extensions" and install the "Toolbox" v.1070.

    • Launch the "Toolbox" and select Update Mode

    • Navigate to Menu:Currency and Security Tools

In the resulting window, under "Update Functions" you should select:

"Fix: Force Change Accounts/Categories [& Securities] FROM Currency TO Currency

"Proceed" to select the relevant account/s.

Finally you should restart Moneydance to retain the changes.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

    +1 following. I’m pondering whether a small extension could/should do this…

I think it is very simple if you just copy everything over the same. So if it was 50GBP in a GBP account and you move it to a EUR account, it becomes 50EUR. No conversions.

Given it is almost always a mistake in entering the transaction in the wrong account by mistake ... this is exactly what you want. BTW it is what quicken does too

There is an associated problem with the other side of the transaction and what currency that account/category is in.

You may have an exchange rate conversion where there should no longer be one, or you could be moving the transaction to an account where there does need to be a conversion to post the other side of the transaction.

I’ve been thinking about this. It’s no where near easy.

You are assuming that both the source account and category assigned the txn are both the same from currency, and that both the target account and category are both the same to currency.

If you are changing the account’s currency then the txn’s category entry will either become fx converted back to 1, or 1 that needs converting to fx. Ok - one way is easy. The other way is tricky - what rate do we use?

After consideration, I see no way to safely implement this without a popup screen with options. That defeats the whole point. IMO.

The only one that would work is if all selected txns have a to account/category which is already the same target currency. I guess you could allow that scenario to work.

    Thank you Stuart

I guess it seems natural to me to have a currency on an account, and unnatural to have a currency on a category. But it looks like that is the way MD is designed so it makes it harder.

Even so my point would be that if I typed the transaction straight into the correct account first time I am not asked to enter an exchange rate ... it is defaulted. So this move would need to follow the same logic as if it was entered on screen
