Envelope Budgeting
Hi all,
I've been searching for information on Envelope Budgeting in Moneydance and it turns out it is a popular feature request but information is spread out in various different threads, wiki articles and trac tickets.
I'd like to suggest to users who are interested in this
particular feature that they vote for it on the following trac
ticket:
http://moneydance.com/trac/ticket/1198
Regards,
Kevin
EDIT: Trac is dead. To vote for this feature please add a comment to this thread.

I see envelope budgeting as the budget for the rest of the family (all of them not doing the accounting). It needs to be able to have just a few simplified sub-set of categories that are for the discretionary spending. I can't get the rest of my family to enter their categories for spending yet directly into their devices with moneydance on them, because all the accounts and categories for taxes, etc, appear in the choice list. If the iphone version had just the categories I designated as envelope categories, then I think I could get cooperation from the other spenders in the family to enter their own spending.

Hi Everyone,
No need to vote for envelope budgetting we've been hard at work implementing it for Moneydance 2013.
Sincerely,

I am new to Moneydance having been a user of MS money for over 15years. So slow now and not being supported is a constant worry which is why I am in the process of changing. From 1st April I am hoping all the reminders will transfer money from my bank accounts to all the relevant accounts I have set up automatically for many years to come. Never knew it was called enveope budgetting but have set up 30 liability accounts. I hope it all works out because other wise my computer will be going out the window.
I am sure when the new moneydance 2013 comes out that I will benefit enormously.

Very much looking forward to envelope budgeting. Although Money Pie is good, having this feature integrated into MD will make it more practical.

MD needs to seriously improve it's budgeting features. My budgets include some trivial complexities like large expenses that I pay once a year - and am totally frustrated with MD's inability to generate a useful visual of where I am spending my money and if I am spending more that I am making.
Several posts have said that envelope budgeting is coming in MD 2013 and that I do not need to vote for it. I guess I'm just voting for MD 2013 and a real budget...soon.

As a new user I too am looking forward to envelope budgeting in MD. I have used three other envelope budgeting programs in the past, which each had a good point here or there, but each lacked something that made tracking/budgeting more work than necessary.
I am really looking forward to MD 2013 and the budgeting feature which was the main reason for me to purchase the current version.
Thanks for moving in this direction.

Hi Jon,
Just checking to see if there's an update for the MD 2013 launch? It seems there's a lot of demand for an envelope / savings goals feature across several threads, and I look forward to seeing the solution when it launches. I've downloaded the trial version and am pleased so far, but I want to be sure there's a savings goal feature before I purchase.
Mint.com has a great version of this feature that I used for my student loans, but I've switched to MD because of its access to european accounts.
Thank you in advance for your update on the 2013 launch timing.
~Julie

Hello Julie,
I'm afraid that I am unable to provide a timeline for the next major release of Moneydance. The most I can offer is that we are actively working on the next release, which includes a new budgeting system. I would speculate that the next release is still more than a few months away. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific than that.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

July 8th + several months for MD 2013. I wonder if it will turn out to be MD 2014? I like Kevin's idea (on the back of my initial suggestion) of using a naming update pathway - MD Tango, MD Waltz etc.
Saves us all waiting for this year's release! After all, there is no need for a promised yearly major release as long as the user base knows the program is actively being further developed?
Cheers all.
