fiscal vs. calendar year

Hi,

I like MoneyDance so far. I am evaluating it to manage the books of two non-profits. I really like the budget feature in this regard. If the eval goes well, I'll likely switch my personal finance over as well.

I did run into one irritation though. It seems that MoneyDance cannot consider the fiscal year as opposed to the calendar year. One of the non-profits I am treasurer of starts it's fiscal year On July 1 (it is affiliated with a US middle school). We run our books from July 1 - June 30. The budget and almost all the reports consider "the year" as starting Jan 1. So when I want to see my checking transactions for "This year", I want the transactions from this fiscal year, not this calendar year. It would also be nice if all the reports (income/expense) would default to starting from the beginning of the fiscal year.

When I was setting up my budget, I had to change the start and end date of every item. Very painful.

    David,

Default fiscal year functions are not currently on the list of planned improvements to Moneydance, but it is certainly an interesting idea which I will pass on to the developer. In the meantime, I would suggest creating custom reports by shifting the date ranges, then "memorizing" those reports so that you can easily run them next time.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thank you for your interest in Moneydance.

    Angie,

Thanks. I do have customized reports and budget. However things like
"subtotal by year" will not work correctly if I want to analyze
categorized expenses fiscal year to fiscal year.

Incidentally, my "Budget" cannot remember to "Don't subtotal". I
always get subtotal by month when I open this customized report.

    Hi David

Thank you for bringing the budget report problem to our attention. I have created a bug ticket for this issue. here is the link:

I also think user selectable Fiscal Year support would be good to add MD.

Fiscal year is crucial. Mine begins December 1st. Some non-profits start 7/1, so please see if you can at least do a work-around so that budget reports comply.

    Thanks,

This has been a long running request from those (few?) of us who live in countries where the personal tax fiscal year is not 1 Jan to 31 Dec. There are at least 5 trac records related to this issue (267,306,1611,1628,1955).

I realize that the trac tickets are not all asking for exactly the same thing but it would be great if these tickets could be consolidated somehow into a single ticket dealing with changes to dates.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Amen

About time this easy feature was added

User defined periods have been requested for ages and would be simple to implement...surely!

If this actually going to be discussed, how about updating this suggestion with the meetings decision, before closing it off?... please?

    ta

ps If fiscal date range is going to be added (hopefully user definable)

can we also have THIS fiscal period as well as LAST fiscal period

I'll add this info as well. I highly encourage everyone who is interested in this suggestion to vote and give additional input on the trac tickets as well. While we will be discussing this feature, it's unlikely we'll make a firm decision about it's inclusion or a specific time-line at this time. I'll post again when I have more information.

As someone in the UK, where we have a quaint Apr 6 - Apr 5 fiscal year, I vote for this being added (as a user-definable preference)

A preference function to set a MD "start of year" date would go a long way towards satisfying this need.

If you could live with having separate data files for each FY, the "archive" function can be used to eliminate transactions before any chosen date and create the files. Obviously, each file has to be opened separately for processing.

    Hi all,

I'm delighted to let you know that we have implemented the custom fiscal year option in Moneydance 2011 preview build 801, available for download here. To use this preview build, you must have a valid license key for Moneydance 2011. If you are not currently running Moneydance 2011, you can determine if your key entitles you to a free upgrade to Moneydance 2011, use the key tester tool at the bottom of this page.

The fiscal year setting in available in your Moneydance Preferences, available under the File menu on Windows or Linux, or the Moneydance menu on a Mac. Fiscal years are also available as settings on graphs and reports, as well as the budgeting graphs. We'd appreciate any feedback you have on this feature.

Thanks for using Moneydance, and for your patience as we worked to implement this tool.

Can the reports be fixed to now accommodate the "Group By Fiscal Year".
    - see attached images

Its no good if the reports just group on calendar years still.

    Thanks

    Running MD 2011r2 (803)

I have an account many years of transactions. Even though I set the "Fiscal Year Start" (in Preferences) to November 1, after pressing the "This Year" button on the Transactions page it still starts on the Calendar year. A "This Fiscal Year" button would be nice.

The best solution would a "Display Date Range..." option in a drop down menu somewhere where I could set any span of time to view.

Is there an "up-vote" system available like on Reddit?
