Budget and Reminder Integration

I'd like to see more integration between Budget Items and Transaction Reminders.

As far as I can tell, Moneydance treats these two concepts independently but I think that they should be closely related. For example, if I add a new item to a budget, I'd like to be given the option of automatically creating a transaction reminder or linking it to an existing one. Likewise when creating new transaction reminders.

If modifying a budget item, the corresponding transaction reminder should be updated automatically.

I've logged a feature request in trac.

Please add your vote if you are interested in seeing this feature added.

    Kevin,

Thank you for this suggestion, I agree it would be a great feature for many users (myself included). I've added this feature to our list to discuss at our next visioning meeting.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

    Hi Angie,

Do you have any feedback from your visioning meeting?

Also, this discussion is closed. Does that mean there is no ticket associated with it? What if other users would like to add a vote for this feature?

    Cheers,
    Kevin

    Kevin,

It's still a feature I'd love to see implemented, but we don't have a current timeline. I have re-opened this thread and attached the ticket to it, so it's now votable. I've also increased the level of this ticket, as I'd personally love for this to be implemented!

I'll post on this thread when we have any more updates,

    Hi Kevin,
yes this is a similar thing I suggested for the budget projection.
    http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/suggestions/432-completely...
I believe that what you are saying could be easily coupled with a budget projection feature. Right now relying only on reminders is not enough as the budget show also expenses that happen along a given time, like groceries for the month.
How do I vote for the features? Every time I click on a link like this http://moneydance.com/trac/ticket/2759 I get sent back to the home page http://help.infinitekind.com/

    thanks

    Hi Marco,
I'm not too sure how to vote for things. I've seen support staff say that by posting to a thread you are registering a vote. But then I've also seen support staff say something quite different.
    http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/suggestions/889-attaching-...

Not a very good system I think.

I always thought the "vote" was done by how many people were subscribed to the thread. (You can subscribe to a thread on the upper -right when you're logged in.)

I would also love to see the two systems have the option of being linked. Personally, I have most of my transactions setup already, which makes some of the extensions happy about forecasting things. But I can see why one would want them to be linked up in a way, at least on a per-item basis.

    Kevin's proposal gets my vote.

His forecasting extension is the most important part of Moneydance for me and to be able to integrate budgets would be a show stopper.

    Hi all,

To clarify the "voting" process a bit: our system basically tracks the number of posts in a thread that has a suggestion ticket attached to it. This gives us a rough idea of how popular an idea is. Of course, not all posts in a thread are simply votes in support; many are clarifying the request, others are voting against the idea. In general, the system provides a rough guide for how many people are talking about an idea, and we read the thread and use old fashioned human brainpower to decide what people are saying about the idea, rather than a strict count of the number of posts.

Hmmm Have not long switched to this wonderful OS called Mac, however one issue was the use of MS Money which we use on a weekly basis for private and investment budgets and accounting. One of the main things we use is the forecaster. We were told we could use VMWare fusion to run windows enabling us to run MS Money from there. This has worked for a while but we have some annoying gremlins in the system that have now caused an access issue to windows itself. It keeps asking for passwords we haven't set up and has know locked us out all together, The MS tech advice was sorry can't help because you're using in Fusion…. Thanks heaps MS. Hence the search for a MAC program of the same capability. Looking around these forums prior to purchase has me thinking this feature of Account projections should be an automatic starting point for the Developers. Is there any idea of how long this type of development is from fruition.
Regards Keen to convert to Money Dance but need a projection option.

    Hi Cable Guy,
Moneydance itself doesn't have the ability to project account balances but there is a free third-party extension called Forecaster. It will provide a forecast based on transaction reminders and scheduled transactions.

(Disclaimer: I'm the developer of this extension)

You can download the latest version from here:
    http://code.google.com/p/moneydance-forecaster/

The download link is on the left hand side of the main page, scroll to the bottom for installation instructions. Give me a shout if you have any questions or suggestions.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

I want to add my vote for this feature. I love MD but a major let down is the non-integration between budget items and reminders. Nothing is more annoying that updating my budget when I get a raise, then having to go back through and change the reminders that correspond to the budget items.

I hate having to maintain two nearly identical sets of data with the distinct possibility that they can become out of sync if I key something in wrong.

    Hi MD team,
There have been a few suggestions from support staff that enhancements to the budgeting system are on the way. Can you tell us if integration with reminders is one of the enhancements you have planned?

    Kevin,

While we have determined that we'll be making some major changes, we haven't nailed down the exact nature of those changes- we've been focusing on the iPhone app update. When this is put to bed we'll shift our focus to nailing down the specifics of what we'll be including in the next version of Moneydance.

I use Moneydance's budgeting features quite heavily, and I'm really excited to help shape these improvements. When we have specifics, or a beta build for testing, we'll certainly post on this thread and our blog. I'm sorry I don't have more specifics, but I'd prefer to under promise and over deliver than the opposite.

    Hi Angie,

Any update on this feature request? Do you know if it's being worked on?

Having also come from Microsoft Money (but this time moving to Linux) this is a deal breaker for me. I've done the trial and everything else looks great - these two aspects (transaction reminders and budgets) just need to have the option of being linked.

    Thanks
