It should be possible to type several letters to get to categories, for example I am able to type "boo" when I want to access my books category instead of my bus fare category. If this is not true, please let me know what OS and version of Java you are running.

As for the subcategories issue, you are completely correct and it is an issue we consider a priority. I have created a ticket for this issue. The ticket is attached to this discussion. By posting in this discussion your interest in the ticket has been registered. This is equivalent to voting for it.

I hope your trial is going well, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Thanks for getting back with me. It is not true. Only the first character is recognized.

So I am running on Mac OS X, Version 10.6.4

My Java version is:
java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02-279-10M3065)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.3-b01-279, mixed mode)

Thanks so much for your assistance. I have been looking for quite a while for a financial software app and MD looks really good to me but I couldn't possibly use it long term with it working as it is. I would love to buy it if I can get it running properly on my machine.
Regards,
But I would like to make one more suggestion. In MS Money I could type the characters for my sub-categories and if found the correct main and sub-category. In MD I need to select the main catogory, then enter a :, then start typing the sub-category until found.
Too many unnecessary steps.

gerdtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/26731932010-08-25T03:27:47Z2010-08-25T03:27:47ZAssigning transactions to subcategories

Try typing the first 2 letters of the main category followed by the colon then the first letter of the subcategory. So for Personal:Books you would type in Pe:B (make sure you don't put in any spaces) and MD should find the correct subcategory.

Nonametag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/26731932010-08-25T03:42:16Z2010-08-25T03:42:16ZAssigning transactions to subcategories

That is what I currently do. I am just spoiled with MS Money, here I just type the sub-category and if it's unique it automatically populates the main and subcategory.

It's just the change having to abandon MS Money and change to something new. I just see that Money paid much more attention to streamlining, saving key strokes, making screens/functions more "obvious", the download feature was much easier to use, merging was a snap. MD has to catch up on all those "thinks" we had for a long time.

I just would with the developers would get a copy of Money and check out it's functionality. It would be the fastest way to learn, what could easily be included in MD.

Sadly this feature did not make the first cut for the Moneydance
2011 release, but I am hopeful that it will be included in later
releases. I would personally appreciate this feature as well, and
we will post here when we have further information on this
feature's implementation.

appreciated it when I switched from Quicken (which also has
subcategory matching without needing to enter the main
category).

However, I very much hope that it's made optional! Over the past
seven years, I have gradually modified my subcategory names, and
now the cat:sub entry method is more streamlined for me than the
entry in Quicken ever was. The issue is that I have many
subcategory names which occur in more than one category. Under the
Quicken method, I found it difficult to distinguish them, and ended
up naming subcategories to include part of the category name, for
example "Consulting:Cons Travel" for consulting travel. This was a
pretty ugly kludge, and I've been happy being able to enter the
category and migrating to the MD method.

So yes, absolutely offer the alternate method, even make it the
default -- but make it an option.
