Two Moneydance Updater Problems
It's not clear that the updater checks for updates. The dialog's purpose simply appears to be to allow you to set what kinds of updates you want and whether to check on startup. That's in fact how I thought it worked until I saw the text "you have the latest version" on the status line. I suggest you have a "Check for updates now", "OK", and "Cancel."
The OK button should be on the left of the Cancel button. Not trivial.
Thanks.

xxTemp,
I believe the extension is designed the way it is because most people will only see the Settings window once- when they install the extension. The logic would then be "The user is looking at the settings, which means they haven't used the extension before, so there might be updates that we're seen during this Startup, so I'll check now." I agree it might be clearer to have the three options you suggest, and I've logged a ticket for this suggestion. It's attached to this thread, so if/when there are developments you'll be automatically notified.
As always, thank you for your thoughtful suggestions on ways we can improve our users' Moneydance experience.
