<p>I thanks for the suggestion. I could see a more powerful batch
change being very useful.</p>
<p>By posting your suggestion here it will be reviewed and
considered in the next iteration of the Moneydance development
cycle.</p>

the other side of a transaction.</p></div>jptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652009-05-13T01:30:59Z2009-05-13T01:31:42ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>I concur with this strongly. One of MoneyDance's really strong
design features is the pervasive use of double-entry accounting and
hence the ability to peruse income and expense categories as
accounts. One workflow which is ALMOST possible, but not yet
complete is this:</p>
<p>1) Find a transaction with a category of interest<br>
2) Go to "other side" of this transaction to pull up the income or
expense category<br>
3) Filter that account using the really cool instantaneous search
field at the top of the register, to isolate the subset of
transactions you want to alter<br>
4) [This is the part you cannot do now] Batch change the filtered
transactions to put them in another category.</p></div>Vgertag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652009-05-29T19:57:58Z2009-06-01T13:40:11ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>I agree. In fact, the absence of this feature is a show stopper
for me right now. I recategorize my transactions all the time.
Another possibility is to allow the category editor to move
transactions from one category to another. Or, if you delete a
category it should give you the option to assign a different
category to the existing transactions. If you could just get one of
these use cases in the next version I would start using Moneydance.
I'm just itching to move away from Microsoft Money.</p></div>briangideontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652009-05-30T18:17:33Z2009-05-30T18:17:33ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>HI All</p>
<p>While it is not everything for everyone there is a 3rd party
find and replace extension available for free that provides many of
the batch change options you are talking about.</p>
<p>Here is the link to download and installation instructions:

would<br>
be best if it is evaluated and "signed" so we can feel more
confident<br>
in using it.</p>
<p>Thanks,</p>

require minimal software development time is to allow the batch
change account combobox to list expense and income accounts. Then
you could just navigate to the category account you want to change
and move all transactions that way. That's a more limited use case
than what the OP was talking about, but even the little stuff can
add up eventually.</p></div>briangideontag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652009-06-01T17:20:46Z2009-06-01T17:20:46ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>Vger</p>
<p>The writer of the "Find and replace" extension is Kevin

and the extension will soon be signed.</p>

helpful to be able to change the categories of several different

<p>This find replace extension would be a valuable tool in

once...<br></p></div>jptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652011-03-09T01:58:06Z2011-03-09T01:58:06ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>A new build of the Find and Replace extension was released in
Feb. It's quite good. You can download it through the Extensions

the extension is now build 72.</p></div>Nonametag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652011-03-09T19:51:24Z2011-03-09T19:51:24ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>JP,</p>
<p>It's currently possible to change the category of several
transactions at once using the Batch Change function. You can find
more details on using this function in the Moneydance 2010 help
documentation, which is located <a href=

here</a>.<br></p>
<p>The Find and Replace extension is also an excellent tool. Please
let me know if I can be of further assistance,</p>

<p>Thank you for your response. I read through the appropriate part
of the help manual and came across the following:<br>
"Please note- changing the Category of a transaction changes the
information which is currently in the Category field of the
transaction. Changing the Account of the transactions will move
them out of the current account (or category) register into a
different account (or category) register."</p>
<p>The above statement exactly describes my problem. I'm constantly
trying to re-organize my categories to make them simpler. (Part of
the necessity of these changes is that MD makes me type the
category and sub-category each time, but that's another
post).<br></p>
<p>As a result, I often click on a category from my category list
and want to move several transactions into a different category.
Without the ability to batch change the category on the OTHER side,
I have to make each of these changes manually. This is both
time-consuming and frustrating.<br></p></div>jptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652011-03-12T15:45:57Z2011-03-12T15:45:57ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>You can change the category when you are on the other side you
just have to be careful because everything is in reverse because of
your perspective.</p>
<p>For example say you have an expense category called "Misc Exp".
When you are in the checking register and you enter a transaction
categorized as "Misc Exp" the Account is the Checking account and
the category is the "Misc Exp". However if you go into the register
for "Misc Exp" the reverse is true. The Account is now "Misc Exp"
and the category is Checking. So if you wanted to change the
transaction from "Misc Exp" to "Personal Exp" while you are in the
"Misc Exp" register you would select the transaciton in the "Misc
Exp" register and select <strong>BatchChange->Account</strong>
(that is not a typo). And then select "Personal Exp" as the new
account.</p>
<p>Generally speaking I do not recommend that people edit
transactions from their income and expense registers directly.</p>

<p>Thank you! I never would have thought to try that, and it is
EXACTLY what I needed! I understand your caution, and MD also has a
good caution popup, but for updating my categories that will be
invaluable. Thank you.<br></p></div>jptag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/1497652011-03-31T00:14:15Z2011-03-31T00:14:15ZImproved Batch Edit<div><p>JP,</p>
<p>I'm glad this helps, and good luck simplifying your categories.
I too try to do this, but invariably end up complicating them!
Thanks for using Moneydance, and please let me know if I can be of
