Category Dropdown
When entering the category on a transaction the type ahead feature gets you to the main category. This is great. However if you want a sub-category and use the dropdown feature after typing a few letters of the main category, the main category is always at the bottom of the dropdown window. It would be very helpful if the main category was at the top of the dropdown window which would allow me to simply select the desired sub-category versus having to scroll down before I can select the desired sub-category. I would love to see this function in a future version of MD.

Hi Gordon,
I think that there may already be a suggestion ticket floating around for this very issue. As a workaround, I use the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard to select the Category.
If the Category and Sub-Category are both known, you can type a few letters of the Category until it auto-completes, then type a colon ( : ) then start typing the Sub-Category until it too auto-completes.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your reply. I will use the colon (:) to quickly allow the typing of the subcategory. this will really help.
I have another suggestion (question). I created categories to collect my expenses for a vacation home separate from the same expenses for my main home. I have now sold the vacation home and would like to get those categories off of the dropdown list of categories. If I delete the categories from the list, the expenses are deleted which is not acceptable. I would prefer to be able to make a category "inactive" so that it disappears from the dropdown list without it disappearing from the check register. I think this was something that I could do when I was using Quicken.
What do you think of this idea? Do you have any questions? By writing to you have I gotten this idea into the MD feature improvement suggestion box...or what should I do to make this a suggested improvement?
Thanks
Gordon

Hi Gordon,
The ability to 'Hide' Accounts and or Categories has been a long standing request of Moneydance users.
The only workaround that I can offer is to prefix the undesireable Categories with the letter 'Z' so that they are relegated to the bottom of any drop-down lists.

Gordon,
Kevin's correct that this is a logged request, and I'll speak with our developers again about implementing this tool. There's also a request to be able to type only the sub-category to make it easier to navigate to those.
I've attached these request tickets to this thread, so your vote had been logged and you'll be automatically notified when we have more information on these features.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Moneydance has now implemented a feature which permits users to mark an account as "Inactive". This feature is available in Moneydance 2011, which is offered as a free upgrade to those who purchased Moneydance 2010, and for $24.99 for those who purchased an earlier version of Moneydance. To see which upgrade you quality for you can use the key tester tool available at the bottom of the Moneydance purchase page.
