MD Colors
Sorry guys and/or gals...the new colors of MD are just gross. And they are so unsaturated that if I don't have my MBP screen at a perfect angle, the screen contents are so light as to be unreadable. I appreciate your try to be bold but these colors just aren't working. Sorry.

I am not noticing such a profound problem on my test screens.
I am curious, have you changed the default contrast setting under Apple->System Preferences->Accessibility? Is the "Display Contrast" set to normal?

All set to normal.
Opinion: I love the app, but I think new colors were just poor design judgement (not too crazy about icons either, but I can live with those). This move to make OSX apps to look more like iOS apps is just not working. Apple’s choices lately have not been great either, so you are not alone.

I agree. It is so faint that it is hard to read.

we've tweaked the colors and font some on the preview build to make it easier to read. Can you try out build 1181 to see if that helps?

The link takes me to 1175?

Hi Sandr,
The current preview build is 1181. Did you go to the downloads page instead of the preview page?

Have not had the opportunity to do it. But intend to try it out, possibly tomorrow. Been working with home networking issues :-(

Yes; got it now. It is a little better. Thanks!
What does the symbol mean and where do I find it on my PC keyboard?

Hi Sandr,
I believe you can use Ctrl instead of that symbol. That symbol is only present on Macs.

I've moved to 1181, my problem is that I no longer have any entry in Preferences to choose colors, like the background color of post dates entries, which used to be a pale yellow. Has all control over colors been removed? (Windows version)
11 Posted by Gerald Achor on Mar 21, 2015 @ 08:22 PM
Yes. All control has been completely removed in MD2015. There have been several discussion threads about its demise. We are only left with some control over fonts in the Preferences Area.

Has MD indicated this removal is permanent? It sounds like I'm not as badly off as some others posting here, I can at least read everything. But the difference now between normal entries and post-dated entries is barely noticeable. This does indeed seem to be a real backward step; I wonder what the thought was behind it?

I can only offer what I suspect has happened.
If I recall correctly it was indicated that there was to be a large rewrite of the code for MD2015, give MD has been around for while this would have needed to be done sooner or latter, it could well have been needed for future developments as well.
It could have simply been decided that instead of rewriting this area of code to just use fixed colours.
That is my guess at what has happened anyways :)

George,
I agree with Des. I have heard that MD2015 is a complete re-write (new code) of MoneyDance. I also figure that maybe they thought that they were under a time restraint in producing the Program for production. Therefore, they left the re-writing of certain aspects of the Program until later; to be added in future preview builds. I hope that is the case. (G)
Maybe we will hear something from one or more of the Support Staff on this matter.

Hi Jerry,
It's unfortunate that I.K. decided to remove user-defined color choices.
From what I can tell, at least some of the color choices were stored in config.dict. MD 2015 apparently still uses config.dict so it's hard to imagine it involving a major re-write to include these settings again.
Upgrading should not = loss of another popular feature.

Hi Kevin,
Yes it is unfortunate that user-defined color were removed. Even Sean now states that the move of MD2015 to production so soon was ill-conceived. I can vouch that MD2015 still utilizes the config.dict file. After converting to MD2015, I deleted config.dict. I reentered MoneyDance and went straight to the Welcome Screen where I had to point the Program to the directory where my data file resided. I lost all Home Summary Page settings. Had to reinstall the Extensions I was using. I even had to reenter my License Key. Live and learn. (g)
I somewhat like the general color scheme of MD2015 (running build 1181). I have not downloaded build 1182. My dislike is that the fonts in the registers and home summary page are not dark or bold enough for me. Maybe build 1182 took care of that condition. If we download continuous builds maybe one will get the right color scheme. (LOL) I know it is not funny!!

Scott,
Just tried the current regular downloadable version of Moneydance 2015 and the color scheme is hideous. I haven't tried these newer builds and have absolutely no intention of doing so. The changes are horrid enough that I've reverted back to Moneydance 2014. Thank god I backed up my file prior to updating.
Moneydance 2014 could not access the file after it had been used by Moneydance 2015. I tossed Moneydance 2015, tossed the file modified by Moneydance 2015 and emptied the trash. After that I restored the data file from my backup.
I haven't tried these newer builds and have absolutely no intention of doing so. To be blunt, this is the kind of change that angers customers enough to look at other personal finance applications. I'm already checked out multiple alternatives and, dare I say, the newest version of Quicken is one of them.
Yes.
The changes to the color scheme of Moneydance 2015 are horrid enough that I'm considering a product from Intuit.
Just thought you might want to think about that when working on bug and feature fixes of Moneydance 2015 or working on Moneydance 2016.

Changing file formats is not all that uncommon, it can often be necessary to resolve shortcomings or provide for future developments, in such cases older versions can not be expected to be able to read the newer files. I recall Microsoft released filters for older versions of office so they could read/write newer files, they did not work all that well though.
Even with arguably the same format, newer software versions may add additional functionality that essentially means you could lose data by opening the file with an older release.
Quicken has done it on multiple occasions, in their case I am not sure why as the newer version did not seem to offer anything extra

dwg,
I’ve no issue with changing the file format. However, when this kind of change is made, the developers usually include a readme file and/or have the application give the user a warning about it when opening the file. The Infinite Kind does neither. In fact, they include no documentation whatsoever with the new version of the application. the .zip file contains just the application and nothing else. If I sound resentful, then it’s with good reason. My suggestion, since this thread is actually for suggestions, are as follows:
A. Revert back to the previous color scheme, give the option of X number of color schemes and/or allow the user to control the color scheme with a means to revert the changes if they prove unsatisfactory.
B. Include a readme file that details the lists of changes to the application. It should explicitly inform users upgrading from previous versions of Moneydance to backup their data file because Moneydance 2015 uses a different file format and upon upgrading, the current data file will no longer be compatible with previous versions of the application.
C. Have Moneydance 2015 provide a dialog upon opening the data file that warns users the file format will be upgraded and give them the option of quitting before changes are made to ensure they have the chance to back it up.

FWIW when you install MD 2015 is makes a zip archive of the files you had and places it in the Archive folder/directory
23 Posted by zrob on Mar 26, 2015 @ 10:11 PM
dwg,
It might be nice if there was something that informed users it does this for them. Maybe a ReadMe file?

I just upgraded to 2015 and the first thing I noticed was that most of the content now has a single washed out white background, making it very difficult to read entries an so on.
Why in the world would you remove the ability to set these colors?
I rely on these colors to make the registry readable and also to indicate what type of account I'm currently working with.
A definite regression :)

My, this thread is growing by leaps and bounds!! I just glad that the ticket assigned to this discussion is still open!! I think the main desire of this thread so far is to bring back color/font choices in the Preference Area. As far as I have heard, the developers are open to bringing back, at least, color schemes. I just wonder how many posts will it take in this thread before the developers take us seriously.

Hi All,
We're trying to gauge the over all support for adding a high contrast theme to Moneydance to solve these issues. Could you discuss that option on this thread and let us know what you think?
