New accounts and automatic insertion of transaction information and automatic selection of categories

Hi developers,

This has been an issue in each version of Moneydance I've used over the years. Imagine I've been using X account for a bunch of transactions. I'll use check as an example. Imagine I pay a monthly bill and enter the details into the account. Payee, amount and choose a category. The next time I pay that bill, I open the register for that account, enter the Payee and Moneydance handles the rest. No problem. But, if I decide to use a different account to pay the bill, I have to enter the Payee, amount and choose the category as if it is the first time I'm paying it. Quite annoying. I'd like to see Moneydance remember Payee, amount and category, regardless of account. That way, the entry isn't treated as if it's a new payment each time I switch accounts.

I bring this up because my primary checking account was hijacked recently and I closed it as a result. I've had to pay bills via a secondary account as well as a new primary account. Eventually, Moneydance will memorize the information in these accounts but that's going to happen over time, rather than immediately. In the meantime, it's annoying to have each entry into these accounts treated as if it's a new bill.

    Hi Robert,

You are correct. Payee names are not global across all accounts in Moneydance.

This behavior can provide something of a fail-safe in that, if a user were to attempt to enter a payee into the wrong account, auto-complete would not engage, thus giving the user a heads up that something was amok.

Yours is a unique situation not common to most users. So is entering the Payee into the wrong account but to a lesser degree. Arguments can be made for or against the use of global payees.

There is however a workaround for you. Enter your Payees into the Address Book. They will then be available across all accounts.

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for the suggestion for improving Moneydance! There's an existing ticket in our ticketing system with your suggestion, so I've attached it to this discussion and the developers will be looking into it.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

    Kevin,

I wish that we could create an Address Book without setting up Online Bill Payment. OR is there a way?

    Hi Jerry,

You don't need Online Bill Payment to use the address book. You can access the address book at any time by going to Tools -> Address Book in Moneydance.

    Hi Kevin,

No doubt this is an uncommon situation. Still, though, it’s one of the things I miss about Quicken 2007. The address book doesn’t offer a viable solution since it won’t include all of the details. for a simple transaction, it’s easy enough to do the entry. Annoying but easy. It’s more of an issue with split transaction. For example, when I enter my paycheck, I start with the gross amount and use a split to break it down. This allows for more detailed reporting. fortunately, I found an alternate solution for making more complex entries. I can go to the other account, copy a previous transaction and then use the Batch Change command to move it into the new account. Not as convenient as an auto-complete but workable.

    Hi Robert,

Have you considered creating a 'Reminder' for your Paycheck. You could create it with all of the required splits in tact and schedule it as needed. You can edit each occurrence (if necessary) prior to committing it to the register.

I am a long time MS Money user. I run MS Money and Moneydance in tandem. MS Money also treats payees globally. The fail-safe provided in Moneydance has saved my skin more than I care to admit.

Like I said, there are arguments for both sides.

If possible, the developers should make global payees an option in Preferences that can be toggled on or off.

    Kevin,

I tried that but found it cumbersome. My list of reminders is already pretty long and adding paychecks and other payees and payment to it would make that list ginormous. Good idea, though!

    Thanks, Scott,

I could not find any reference to the Address Book. It seems to not be documented anywhere that I could find.

My, two discussions going on in one thread!! (LOL)

Sorry, Robert and Kevin for interrupting your discussion. I never had heard anything before mentioned about the Address Book.

I will relinquish the discussion back to you two.
