Transaction merge
Please, please, please revise investment accounts so that downloaded transactions can be merged with manually keyed transactions, and so that reminders (for things like a paycheck) can be set up with splits? Many, many people with a brokerage account uses it also as a checking account, like any other checking account, so it would be beyond wonderful if MD could do the same.

Another vote for the ability to merge investment transactions. I found this thread while trying to figure out how to merge downloaded transactions from my HSA. I already have my paycheck setup with splits, one of which is a transfer to my HSA investment account. However, when I try to download transactions (from Fidelity in this case), MD tries to add a duplicate transaction for my paycheck contributions since it won't let me merge it with the existing transfer created by my paycheck.

I have not seen anyone not want this feature. And, it has been on the lists for quite some time.

I am also one that uses my brokerage account as my primary checking account.

4 years later and we're still crossing fingers they eventually figure out a way to marge investment txns or at least come up with a non-kludgy way to mark (and hide!) them so they don't keep downloading every time.

I have several credit cards that are auto paid in full from my brokerage
account. I find that it works out better if I delete the reminder
transactions (that I use as a placeholder so I know what my cash flow is)
the day before I download the actual transactions from the brokerage
account. Then I can accept the brokerage transactions and merge the credit
card transactions in the CC accounts.
I really should not have to do this. This needs to be fixed.

More than 5 years since this issue was first raised and still not a single response from the support staff. No blog posts or releases for the entire product for nearly a year. Feels like a dead or dying product.
I think I'm done dealing with single developer commercial products. Maybe it's time for me to move to something like GNU Cash.

Hi All,
I just wanted to let you know that I do still plan on adding the ability to merge (and generally clean up) downloaded investment transactions into Moneydance. I understand that it's frustrating to have seen this feature requested for so long and it still not being implemented.
I wonder if it would be of any use to provide the merge function but only for non-security transactions in the Bank Transactions part of the register?
Thanks,
Sean

Merging bank transactions only would cover my use case
40 Posted by Dave Kremer on 09 Jun, 2020 11:16 PM
Thank you for responding to this.
Merging bank transactions would fix this problem for me.
In my case, it's a Fidelity Cash Management account that causes the problems. It is a brokerage account that also acts like a checking account. I have a debit card, can write checks, do automatic payments, direct deposit and Fidelity will replenish the checking portion of the account with transfers from another brokerage account. Many of those cases have the same transaction getting downloaded from more than one source and not being able to merge them is a pain.
By the way, it's not just that this issue has been around for a long time without getting implemented. In my opinion, the real issue is that people submit things to these discussion lists and no one from Infinite Kind provides any kind of response. Just leaving things to close without some response drives me and probably a lot of other customers nuts. PLEASE have someone from support respond to posts instead of letting them just get closed by the system.

This exactly – and like Dave Kremer – it’s a brokerage account – but the securities stay separate from the cash account – how MS Money and Quicken (arrgh!) do it today… The account has 2 sides. One for the securities, the other for the cash and banking transactions.

Yes, the merge function is most necessary for the non-security bank transactions - that’s what we’ve been asking for, for YEARS. Thank you for hopefully actually doing it. I’m not paying for another upgrade without it.

Yes for me I think that would be the more useful part.
Thanks,

Yes I believe merging bank transactions would cover my primary use case also and would be a great feature.
My brokerage account also has a loan account which may need the merge feature at some point so that transfer payments from the bank accounts can be merged with the downloaded data in the loan account. But at the present time, I don't think downloading from my brokerage firm handles transaction downloads for the loan account. I assume that is a problem with my brokerage firm though.

I hope you are still working on this Sean - an update would be very much appreciated. Plus, We wish Infinite Kind would stop closing this thread, since this issue is still not resolved after a ridiculous number of years.

I'm afraid the Tender software closes discussions after about 3 months of no activity, so TIK cannot make the thread stay open.

I just discovered this thread by accident when searching for another problem.
I have long been frustrated by this issue, and my suggestion is to have the SAME MERGING PROCESS for ANY DOWNLOADED TRANSACTION. I can appreciate that there may be problems due to the different data downloaded, but please make the process as similar as possible.
My primary concern is with different treatment of Bank vs Credit Card accounts/downloaded transactions [though it applies to Investment Accounts, too]. Unless I am missing/confusing something - which is very possible - this is what MD does:
* When a downloaded Bank transaction finds a merge candidate already in the transaction register,
* MD always shows the Downloaded Transaction as an Unconfirmed Transaction in the split window below,
* the Downloaded Transaction shows as the Current Transaction in the right side panel that pops up,
* and the Previoulsy Entered Transaction shows up in the Merge Choices below.
* So I click Merge.
That is fine and intuitive.
But if in a Credit Card account:
* the Previously Entered Transaction DISAPPEARS from the original register list,
* and shows up - I think - as an Unconfirmed Transaction below as if it was downloaded,
* the Current Transaction in the right hand column panel is now that previously entered transaction, not the Downloaded one,
* and the Downloaded Transaction now shows up as the Transaction as Downloaded.
* So to "Merge" the Downloaded with Previously Entered, I have to choose Current Transaction!
If you are totally confused reading the above, sorry, I tried to write it out as clearly as I believe it actually happens. To me, this difference in treatment of Merge Candidates is VERY confusing - though I have learned to live with it.

I have not noticed any difference for CC vs Bank download transaction merging. Broadly the behaviour I see is like davet65 described for bank transactions, and I have never noticed any auto-merging happening like described for credit cards.
Might the difference be between imported data files and data files that are downloaded directly by MoneyDance? I manually download all the datafiles (prefereably OFX) myself and then hand them to MD.
This discussion talks about "auto-merge" which might have something to do with what davet65 is seeing.

This thread is about the transaction behavior for a brokerage account
that also has a checking account.... started years ago, this needs to
happen for many thousands of people to break free of Quicken and their
subscription scheme - and stream of constant updates that break shit for
no reason....

Regarding my post #49 and Johann #50:
I think Johann is correct. MD appears to treat automatically downloaded credit card transactions differently from manually downloaded files that I have to manually import into MD. Or perhaps it is a difference in the downloaded file structure from different merchants? I have noticed that for my manually downloaded files, a potential transaction match does disappear from the register if a similar transaction is downloaded. But if the downloaded transaction is accepted, then the original potential match transaction reappears above as a match candidate. I have learned to accept then match so the process is similar to automatically downloaded transactions.
This goes back to my original comment to have the SAME matching process for ANY downloaded transaction - including the original purpose of this thread regarding bank/checking vs investment/brokerage accounts. But add credit card accounts.
55 Posted by Johann Beda on 04 Sep, 2021 02:56 PM
Something that might be nice would be the ability to select two arbitrary transactions and have them merge - thus if I accidentally create two instances of the same transaction, or if I make downloads from different sources that include the same transaction, then I can say "hey, these two things are actually the same thing".
Probably there are some "behind the scenes" things that make this difficult, like tracking download file id numbers or things like that. Moneydance is pretty good at not adding duplicates when I import files again or import files from my financial institution that duplicate transactions (ie. "all spring transactions" and "full year transactions").

Sean, can you at least explain why this should be different for investment accounts? On the surface it seems to be an easy add and as shown by all the comments over 7 years, highly in demand. Please add investment account merging.
Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,
You can achieve this by using the Toolbox now!
Firstly, please ensure you are running this version of Moneydance: Moneydance 2022.4 (4078) and update/install the Toolbox via Extensions->Manage Extensions. The latest Toolbox version is v.1048.
Close and re-launch Moneydance!
Then, navigate to Extensions->Toolbox Move Investment Transactions and follow the onscreen instructions.
Please let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Slight correction to the post above. Toolbox allows you to move/merge investment transactions from one account into another. It does NOT perform any kind of in-account transaction merge on downloaded bank transactions (which i think is what is being requested).
