Assign ESC to exit Splits dialog (and other dialogs) -- [ 2015.7 (1358) ]
It would be nice if ESC could close any pop-up dialog like the Splits dialog. If a change was made, it could prompt the user. If not, ESC would just cause the dialog to close\exit.

Jim

You can use Command ⌘ instead of Control ^ on Mac

Hi Jim
ESC would be a fairly non-standard window closing shortcut. Moneydance already supports the more widely used Ctrl-w to close sub windows. (cmd-w on a mac). Does that meet your needs?

Hi Ben,
>> ESC would be a fairly non-standard window closing shortcut.
I would respectfully disagree on that. For example:
Outlook: If you open an email, ESC will close it.
Word: If you click Insert Picture and decide not to, ESC will close it.
Excel: Select Find (Ctrl-H), ESC will close it.
All Office: Select Print Preview, ESC will close it.
All Office: Most pop-up dialogs, ESC will close it.
SlickEdit: Any pop-up dialog, ESC will close it.
In fact, ESC to close a pop-up dialog within a Windows application is really quite ubiquitous. Therefore, it is really second-nature to me to try that first.
That said, can I live without it? Sure.
Is it a big-deal? No.
Would I really like it? YES.

Jim

I did a little further reading about this and according to Microsoft the ESC key should perform the same functionality as clicking the cancel button on a window. Since the Split window doesn't have a cancel button, or even have cancel functionality, it doesn't seem appropriate to use the ESC key to close it. Either way I have written a quick note to the developers suggesting adding a cancel button to the split window. I am not certain they will like the idea as canceling changes in the split window would require a potentially large number of undos. Anyway I have let them know there is some interest in this functionality.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for time & investigation.
OK. So, it really comes down to dialog Cancel functionality. I never really connected that even though I use ESC a lot.
MD dialogs may not have a Cancel button but that doesn't mean that they couldn't have a one in many cases. But, again, not a big issue; Just a fringe case nicety.
Thanks for putting it up for consideration though.
Regards,
Jim
