Please HELP Me... I DON'T Want To Have To Keep Using Quicken!
Hello:
I’ve been using Quicken for quite some time and I hate it.
I like Moneydance A LOT (the “find and replace” extension is GREAT!) but I have two problems with it.
First:
Moneydance doesn’t seem to have a “memorized payees list” that can be accessed, edited or modified (whereas you CAN access and modify your categories list) and so I have a lot of “junk” payees that I’m unable to manually delete. I’m hoping that “find and replace” will help me clear out a lot of the “junk” entries in my payees list, but it would be nice to have the ability to go through a memorized payees list and delete the ones that I don’t want.
Second:
The BIG issue.
In Moneydance, when I enter a transfer or payment from any of my accounts to a different account (say from my checking account to my savings account) the transfer (or payment) is listed in my checking account, but it isn’t automatically entered into my savings account…
If Moneydance isn’t going to automatically record my transfers and payments into the respective “receiving” accounts, then it doesn’t really do me any good because it’s not actually “tracking” my money for me (I want to know where my money is and where it’s going at ALL times).
The reason why this is so problematic for me is that fact that the only two accounts that I have (that are “direct connected”) are with Chase. All of my other accounts are not… which means that when I make a payment or transfer to them, then I have to enter everything into those accounts “manually” … which is nether efficient or convenient.
Quicken processes all of my transfers and payments for me, and automatically records them into whichever account I’m sending a payment or transfer to… the only thing that I have to do is type in how much and where to and Quicken does all the rest.
Does Infinitekind have any intention of releasing a version of Moneydance sometime in the future that MIGHT include a modifiable payees list, but most DEFINETLY include a function that will process and record transfers and payments and AUTOMATICALLY enter them into the respective accounts that are RECEIVING the funds?
Like I said… I like Moneydance A LOT (much more than Quicken) and I was SOLD until the issue of not automatically entering my transfers and payments for me came up. Finding that out was SUCH a downer, because I might have to stick with using Quicken.

I'm just a user, but I think your big issue is easily resolved.
When recording a transaction from one account to another, if you look at your category list, you will also see your other accounts. By selecting the target account from this list rather than a category, you will then get both sides properly recorded; a debit in one and a credit in the other.
Further; if this is a regular transaction, then you can automate it using the reminder function, so it is automatically entered, either on the day or any number of days in advance.
I'm unsure about the payee issue. If there isn't a list (I think you are right that there isn't one), then what needs pruning?

Hi squirrelbait,
You could have saved yourself a lot of explaining if you just asked how to enter a transfer transaction.
In the case of your example - transferring from checking to savings...
Enter the transfer transaction into the checking account.
From the 'Category' field drop-down list of items, select the actual savings account.
Actual accounts are listed at the top of the list so you'll likely need to scroll up to the top to access the actual savings account.
By selecting the actual savings account as the 'Category' of the transaction, Moneydance will debit the checking account and automatically enter a transaction into the savings account so as to credit it.
Prior payees should become less of a factor going forward with the use of the program. The algorithm to auto-fill them should place more recently used payees ahead of older ones. Be sure to use the similar payees section of the confirmation sidebar as a supplement to auto-fill.

Hello:
Thank you both for your replies. This is GREAT!!! I can FINALLY put Quicken to bed once and for all.
Your advice worked like a charm, and I can't thank you enough.
