Just to add to is switching from Money doable.

I live in the UK. Over two years ago I moved from Microsoft Money 2005, UK version. The move included just over 15 years of cash type accounts, Building Society, Bank, ISA and credit cards. 37 accounts in all, at the time only 5 still open. This involved a lot of repetitive work as each account has to be exported from MS Money as a QIF file, a corresponding account set up in Moneydance and then each QIF file imported into Moneydance. This went well. I transferred all my 37 bank type accounts, thus enabling Moneydance to link transfer between accounts and reconciled them to give the correct balances and in MS Money terms the correct date, payee, Category, Payment/Deposit and Balance. This gave me the full history of just over 15 years of this type of account. When you transfer your first open account it should have the correct date, Description (payee), Category, Payment/Deposit and Balance. You may have to enter the opening account balance. It will automatically set up all the accounts that are transferred to/from in the account you have just imported. They will be hidden in the right-side bar list but can be unhidden by clicking on the + at the bottom. The reason they are hidden is that their balances are wrong as you haven’t imported their data from MS Money. As you do so these accounts should sort itself out. Transferring one account takes about 2 to 3 minutes.
Investment accounts, fund, bonds etc., were more of a problem. I had to develop some work arounds to cover the way I had set up investments in MS Money which were not covered in the Moneydance transfer instructions. That said, once I had developed my workarounds things went well with only a little more work required compared to transferring cash type accounts. The only real issue was that investment prices history associated with each security investment are not exported by MS Money, only the price associated with a sell or buy. I had updated securities prices at the end of each month in MS Money and so had to manually enter price history into Moneydance. This of course only applies if you won’t this history in Moneydance. In MS Money I selected not to track cash transaction so the procedure

I had to follow was different than that outlined in the Moneydance Knowledge base article “Moving from MS Money to Moneydance”. see http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-other-programs/...

But once I had developed a work around all went well. For this reason, I had only transferred investment accounts going back 6 years.

I does take a lot of work, but I am pleased with the result. Would it be right for you, only you can say.

I would suggest you download the free version and try thing out. That way you can get a feel for moneydance. See https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software The only limitation on the free version is a maximum of 100 new transaction entries. There is no restriction on setting up accounts or transferring data into them from MS money. Give it a go.

Also see knowledge base articles at http://help.infinitekind.com/kb

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/465142892018-11-19T02:07:16Z2018-11-19T03:02:13ZWhere do I find my serurity ID and ticker symbols

derekkent23, this is extremely helpful, thank you.
I've done as you suggested and downloaded the free copy and tried a couple of test imports. It's really smart that they limit manual transactions but let you import as much history as you need to test it. My data goes back to 1999 and I was able to import all bank transactions from then.
I initially had a problem with categories, but followed the link you provided and got to this article http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-other-programs/... which clearly told me I was choosing the wrong import options (selecting import from file instead of import from different application).
I also experimented with overlapping accounts to ensure that intra-account transfers weren't doubled up and they look to work fine.
When exporting from MS Money I tried both the Tight QIF and Loose QIF options. Both seemed to work fine and the data looked much better with 'Loose' (complete account and category names); it even seemed to handle 'splits' properly. Did you encounter any problems with this option?
By the third test I had settled on the following approach.
1) Create new Moneydance file
2) Rename default "CHECKING" account to the name of my primary bank account (which touches just about every other account)
3) Import all data from my primary bank account. As you observed, this creates all the other account for you.
My next steps will be...
4) Import all open accounts
5) Check balances of all open accounts in Moneydance
6) For each closed account, check balance against MS Money. If they're different either...
7a) Import that account from Money if I want the history kept or the account was closed in a period I'm still interested in reporting on, or
7b) Journal the balance out with a closing entry on the date of the last entry on that account so it doesn't affect my reports.
So far, I'm impressed with Moneydance. It even manages to import data from a couple of credit card online exports that MS Money has started to complain about.

neil2018tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/465142892018-11-19T02:08:39Z2018-11-19T03:02:14ZWhere do I find my serurity ID and ticker symbols

derekkent23, forgot to add... I was looking for 'ticker' symbols for an ISA fund. It doesn't seem to have them so I assume I'll need to update those by hand.

neil2018tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/465142892018-11-19T08:57:53Z2018-11-19T08:57:53ZWhere do I find my serurity ID and ticker symbols

I am not support staff, just a user.

Hi Neil glad things are working out, at least so far.

I never used splits is Money so can’t say if it would have been an issue.

Individual Ticker Symbol for a security should be under TOOLS – SECURITIES double click on a security name then EDIT. I can’t remember if Security ID fills in automatically or not but if it doesn’t then assign a unique ID. I usually use the Ticker Symbol.

On the subject of securities Moneydance has an extension called Quote and Exchange Rate Updater. It uses two sources for Security prices, Alpha Vantage and IEX. Alpha Vantage limits the rate at which prices can be obtained so is very, very slow and does not cover fund outside the US. IEX is fast but as far as I know does not have coverage outside the US. The ECB option should be used for exchange rates.

The Q & ER does not work for me. It does not support the fund I am invested in. However, there is an excellent free third-party alternative called Quote Loader.
It provides an end to end solution, obtaining quotes from a choice of two sources and entering them into the relevant security price history window, all from a single window within Moneydance.
The system can obtain Security prices, Exchange Rates, Market indices, Cryptocurrency Rates and prices for Cryptocurrency Investments. It provides quotes for stocks and funds, from many stock exchanges US, Canada, UK, Europe and Australia to name but a few. The process of obtaining quotes from the selected source is fast and error free.
Take a look at his thread and download the PDF outlining how to use the system. The PDF contains link to the system elements you will need to download was well as a link to a YouTube tutorial video.
