How do I uninstall and start over on a Mac
Hi, can anyone help. I have got Moneydance in a muddle after trying to import a file from Microsoft Money. I have a MacBook Pro. I uninstalled Moneydance to start over but when I open it all the previous data is there. How do I get rid of this and start all over. Thanks10

Hello,
You don't need to uninstall the program to start a new file. Simply go to File -> New from the menu bar to create a new data file.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Hi Ethan,
Can you help me with something else. When I import my Microsoft Money file for my main bank account it also imports several other bank accounts and the information is mixed up. I only specified one account to import.

Since Moneydance is a double entry bookkeeping system all transfers must have a balancing entry. The import process automatically creates the balancing entries on the other side of transfers. If the other side account on a transfer does not exist the import process will create that account.

Thank you Ben. So I am really confused about this. I am just trying to recreate my Microsoft Money on Moneydance, get the accounts and balances to match what I currently have. It doesn’t seem to work. Perhaps I just have to start from fresh with Moneydance and create new accounts ect. But there is so much information for tax and accounts that I would like to preserve.
I have studied the User guide in detail but not having much luck.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Andrew,
Just to make sure, are you following the instructions for importing from MS Money at http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other...? If not, I'd recommend creating a new data file and following those instructions. Note that step 7 does involve creating all of your accounts in Moneydance before importing.

Thank you Ethan. I didn’t realise step 7 meant creating all of your account. Does that mean closed ones as well?

Your really need to create closed accounts as well as in most instances there are likely to be transfers between closed accounts and those still open, it would only be if there were no interaction that you could overlook any closed accounts.

Dear Ethan,
Thanks for your help. After considering your advice I realise I have 70 accounts on Microsoft Money;
35 are closed. I don't think it's realistic to import them all to moneydance and clean up afterwards.
I think my only options are to continue with Money 2005 or start fresh with Moneydance.
Any further thoughts?

Hi Andrew,
Unfortunately importing from Microsoft Money can be a bit of an involved process. Our best instructions are here:
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other...
But unfortunately that does involve moving over every account one at a time.
Another option, if possible, is to download your transactions from your bank(s) to get the transactions into Moneydance, however they typically only offer a certain date range for transaction downloads, so it's limited in that way and is also one at a time.
I'm sorry I don't have better news!

You are relatively lucky :)
I was migrating from a version of Reckon (localized Quicken) that only allowed exports in a sort of a CSV format. A CSV format that was not consistent in its column layout.
A bit of VBA coding was required to sort that problem out.
I set up all my accounts first in Moneydance then imported bank and credit card accounts so I could use these. As the other accounts were there transfers with these accounts were posted correctly. After that I worked back through the various investment accounts, starting with active accounts. I had over 70 accounts to import.
Note the account and category names must be identical between what you had in Money and what you create in Moneydance.

Dear Scott,
Well good progress. I am just starting all my entries by hand but just from the last few months and it is going well. Money dance is very easy to use, intuitive, and flexible.
Can I just ask one last question please? On Microsoft Money could generate an annual a tax report by selecting categories that I had indicated were tax related. How do I do this in Moneydance? I am setting up categories in Moneydance with the tax related box ticked. How do I generate a report for just those.

Select Tools->Graphs and reports...
Select the "Income and Expenses" report.
In the options for the report check the "Only Tax Related" option.
Click Generate.

Dear Ben,
My pension provider makes an annual small deduction in the number of shares I have invested to cover their fees. So this year it reduces from 894.7 shares to 893.020 shares. How do I update this investment without upsetting everything?
Thanks

I would think the best way to handle this is as a sale of 1.68 shares with the proceeds going to a fees category that you create for the purpose.
This would reduce the number of shares you own and also group the fees in one place and allow for reporting on them if desired.
18 Posted by andrewarthur2 on 29 Jan, 2016 05:14 PM
Thank you. I created a sale of 1.68 shares but it has now created a cash balance of +39.14 in my Register and added that to the shareholder creating an incorrect total value. As you suggested I created a fees category for that purpose. How do I get rid of the 39.14?

How about creating a MiscExp transaction for the amount with the category you have created been chosen in the category field,
20 Posted by andrewarthur2 on 30 Jan, 2016 12:02 PM
Thank you, that works.
It seems a cumbersome method though. Why can’t we simply adjust the new reduced number of shares without all this hassle. Many pension providers in the UK take their charges with an annual reduction in the shareholding.

Well Moneydance does not have an Add/Remove shares option to start with so that makes it impossible to just reduce the share number and also in this case it would be like shares/money disappearing into thin air without any accountability.
You could do it in one transaction using a SellXfr transaction with the category being the destination.

Ha, ha. Well, these shares/money do disappear into thin air, almost without accountability when
the companies just take them! Anyway, this solution is better. Thanks.

Well I was thinking accountability on your part rather than theirs :)

Hi, very pleased with Moneydance.
I have one question. I set up a monthly transaction reminder that I need to enter manually. I notice the transaction is several days old now and I haven’t manually entered it because I have not yet received the money. But it does not show up as overdue on the Summary. I have double checked the date and the entry and they are correct; it is not set to auto commit because the date I receive the payment is variable. I need this reminder to let me know I need to chase it up.
What should I do?
Thank you

Dear Ben,
Thank you but I solved the problem by deleting the reminder and making a new one which does appear in the Overdue column. Don’t know why the other one wouldn’t.

Hi Andrew,
You can accomplish this by going to Tools -> Currencies, then double clicking the currency, then clicking the Edit button in the currency history window that opens. Once in there, you'll see a checkbox where you can enable or disable a currency from showing up on the Summary page.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

Thank you Scott. Please may I ask, is it possible to set up the credit card payments as reminders if you pay the balance every month. I mean can Moneydance automatically transfer the balance from your bank account to pay off the balance every month. I have several cards and the balance is paid automatically every month.
Thanks. Support for this product is great!
