Document folder move

Hi all -

I've got myself a tad confused. I password protected and moved my MD documents folder following the instructions but it appears the only thing that actually moved was the Safe folder (I assume that's where the database is?). Whats even more strange to me is when I select Help > Show Documents Folder it still points to the old location and it appears "empty". Now if I go through File Explorer I see all the folders in the old location except the Safe folder which is in the new location. What did I mess up? Was it only supposed to move the Safe folder and not everything else? It does successfully open the database.

Thanks - BobC

I am not support staff, just a user.

I am not sure what damage you may have done by just moving the safe folder, then starting moneydance. The data is all the folders and files in the data set folder in there correct place.
Its best to leave the data set in its default location. Using HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER will only ever open the default location. If you really have to move your data set to another location on your hard drive move the hole data set folder with its contents, other folders and file. You will need then to use OPEN – OPEN OTHERS to navigate to that location.
In your position, to be safe I would restore an auto backup dated before you moved the safe folder using RESTORE FROM BACKUP

    Hope this helps

Hey derekkent23,. I moved it using the instructions provide in the KB article though they are a bit unclear.

It said to goto Help > Show Documents Folder. From the resulting open window I'm suppose to shutdown MD and move the myfilename.moneydance folder/file which I did successfully. I then started Moneydance and selected "Open Other" > selected the file and everything works fine. My confusion was I thought I was moving everything under the .moneydance directory (even though that's not what I did-duh).

I think it's working as designed as Moneydance opens the myfilename.moneydance folder in the new location and asks for my password. I was just hoping Help > Show Documents Folder would point to the new location rather than the empty original Document Folder.

I think I'm OK I just got myself a bit confused. Might as well break things now while I'm testing things!

    Thanks!

Glad you are sorted, just don't take chances when you do it for real.

    Have Fun

Derekkent23, thanks. I'm not sure it should be a "chance" if it's a documented feature. I feel like with all the ransomware, malware and viruses that could be downloaded from the internet the "chance" is risking having your personal data continuously mounted when not in use. I do feel it could be better documented though overall I'm impressed by the KB articles. It gets confusing though when they combine Mac and Windows instructions in the same document. I also am not sure what the benefit of the help > show document option is if when moved it points to an empty default folder.

I did move the data folder to a trucrypt container and will perform export backups to my ironkey periodically. I know trucrypt is no longer supported causing a bit of risk but it works so darn good and I'm too lazy to get serious about migrating to veracrypt.

Anyway on to testing restores today!

Thanks for all your comments. One of the things I'm really liking about Moneydance is the community support!
