Switching from quicken 2016 V R 19.5
This discussion is public.
I'm brand new to Moneydance. I just exported my entire quicken file to QIF, then imported using the first option. All of the accounts seem to be there, but balances are wrong. In searching, I detected duplicate entries in the register. I renamed the QIF file to QIF.txt to search for the entries. The case I'm describing was a transfer from one account to another. The QIF file has one entry for the From account, one entry for the receiving account. There are no other transactions with that particular amount.
In the MD file there is both a duplicate "payment" in the outbound account, and a duplicate deposit in the inbound account. I have found similar examples.
I conclude that the QIF export from Quicken is OK based on the text file. How can I get a clean import?
Thank you.

I am not support staff, just a user.
A lot of work is underway to improve QIF importer by Sean the developer.
Try using this build https://infinitekind.com/preview
There will be a further build that addresses some issues with investment accounts shortly.
Try it out and post how you get on.

Unfortunately, that didn't work.
I removed the moneydance file
I clicked on above and reloaded (Windows)
chose the option to import a new file
Same duplicates.
The version is 2019.2 (1867)

I have just done some testing with 2019.2(1867) importing a QIF file exported from a program admittedly not Quicken and don’t get any duplicates. Can you check version build under HELP-ABOUT Moneydance?
These are the steps I followed.
Create a new data set under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW.
Deleted the two default Bank accounts, highlighting them in turn and using ACCOUNT – DELETE ACCOUNT.
Drag and dropped the QIF file into the side bar (list on left).
Waited for import window to appear. Checked all listed accounts were of the correct type and changed if required.
Click import and waited to values to file in.
Some accounts were hidden under the “+” at the bottom of the side bar, added them back.
Checked that the initial balances were correct under ACCOUNT EDIT for each account. Some programs don’t export initial balances. For investment accounts remembered that QIF file don’t carry security prices other than buy sell prices so investment account balances are likely to be wrong until you update with current security prices.
If none of the above help I will post a link to this thread to Sean the software developer in the hope he responds.
Hope this helps

Hi ms,
There is a list of potential problems when importing data from other programs, one of which is duplicates:
Duplicated transfers -
If transfers have been duplicated, you'll need to ensure that the dates are the same on both sides of the transfer. Some software supports different dates on the other side of transfers. Unfortunately Moneydance cannot match the two sides of a transfer in such a case.
https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/importing-data-from-other-pro...
So, "a clean import" may be a matter of how much work is necessary to resolve issues once you have switched from one FM app to another.
Take care,
Tony (NOT from MD Support)

Thanks. I tried it your way (create a new file, delete and drag/drop) and
got the same results. I then cleared it out again and exported a single
checking account from quicken. When I imported it to Moneydance, the
duplicates went away. It created a whole lot of contra accounts where
money was transfered into our out of the checking accounts. So aparantly,
when moneydance comes across the additional accounts in the QIF, it doesn't
seem to identify transactions already put in the first checking account,
and duplicates them. There are too many accounts and duplicates for me to
manually correct.

Hello,
I'm sorry about the trouble here. Would it be possible to acquire a copy of the QIF file that has all of the accounts? If that would be ok, then could you upload the data file to the following dropbox folder? https://www.dropbox.com/request/MWl0JDdufTqlKiJUQtqz
If you'd prefer, we could do a screen sharing session so that I could step through the process and see exactly what is going wrong. If you'd prefer that option can you let me know what dates/times you'd be available as well as your time zone?
Thanks,
Sean

Hi ms122ms122ms122
I am surprised you don’t seem to have taken up Sean’s the Moneydance’s developer offer of direct help, did you miss this post at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/switching-from-anoth...

I would prefer not to sent my entire file. Let's do a screen session.
I'm in New York, but this week, I'm only available on Monday and Tuesday.
I'm guessing you are in the UK, so I could do 8AM - 10AM, New York time.
If not, we should try one week later. My Quicken expires on May 1, so if
I can't resolve this by then, I might end up waiting for a year.

OK, let's do today then, 8am your time if that's still ok or a bit later if you need a bit of time or don't get this message before then.
When you're ready, please run the TeamViewer app which should automatically download when you follow this link: https://get.teamviewer.com/tikhelp
That will get you automatically connected to our system so that I can then send you a screen sharing prompt. Hopefully your computer has a microphone so that we can talk while screen sharing, but if not I can give you a call on a number that you provide via the teamviewer chat.
Thanks,
Sean

Sorry for the late reply. I'm available now, (it's 12:44 in NY) for the
next hour. Otherwise how about tomorrow from 8AM to 9AM?

I had some issues when I made this same switch. It seemed to be related to the opening balance of the various accounts. It seemed they were modeled differently in MoneyDance as such all my current balances were wrong. Adjusting the opening balance seemed to fix this.
I had some duplicate transactions too, but I couldn't see what was causing them and after I deleted them I haven't had this issue again. I've now fully switched from Quicken to MoneyDance.

That sounds great, let's go for tomorrow at 8am. If it is what jameshfx mentioned then we'll get to the bottom of it quickly.
Thanks,
Sean

I will be at my desk at 8AM. If have teamviewer on my computer if it is
of use. Alternatively, send me a link to something like joinme or zoom so
we can both talk and look.
I also have whatsapp or googlevoice on my phone.
Thanks.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for talking with me today. I've made the change we talked about that will hopefully resolve the duplicate transaction problem. In the current preview build there is now a 4-day window in which duplicate imported transactions are eliminated, rather than the one day window which was previously enforced. This way if you have a transfer from account A to account B on date N, Moneydance will detect and merge a transfer from account A to account B with the exact same amount as long as it is no more than 4 days before or after, and as long as that duplicate was entered as part of the other account in the process. It's actually simpler (and less error prone) than it sounds.
Anyway, if you get a chance could you try out your import into a fresh data file created with the version of Moneydance from the preview page below?
https://infinitekind.com/preview
Thanks!
Sean
