Try it out for yourself.

The downloaded version of Moneydance is a full working version with the only limit being a maximum of 100 manually entered transactions, with no time limit. Imported files from other financial programs and your bank have no limit on imports, provided that you do not confirm them. If you decided to purchase you are sent a key by email that unlocks the 100-manual transaction limit. If after testing with this free trial version you purchase and change your mind see the 90 day money back guaranty at https://infinitekind.com/refunds
For the future Moneydance never sunsets the version it releases. So, you don’t have to upgrade. If you won’t to upgrade the next version is free (say 2017 to 2019) and from then on you get a 50% discount. All upgrades within a version are free.

Make sure you are running this build of Moneydance https://infinitekind.com/preview

You need to use Quicken to export your data in a QIF file type. Ensure any closed account that have transfers to any open accounts are included in the QIF file, re-open these accounts if necessary.

Open the QIF file in a text editor. You are looking for the date format used in the file e.g. D25/03'2019 Day Month Year or D5/ 17'19 or D05/31/2017 Month Day Year etc. You will need this information later. If you get this wrong it will be apparent as the dates in Moneydance will be all over the place and you will need to start again creating a new data set.

QIF files were never meant for transferring data from one program to another, but it’s all that is available, you will need to spend time cleaning thing up when import is complete.

When you first start Moneydance it opens in the Welcome window click on “Create a new account set”. If you have opened Moneydance before create a new data set under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – NEW.

Select “Create New File” (Data Set) and click NEXT. Type in an Account Set Name (Data Set) and click NEXT. Change Primary Currency (base currency), if required. File Type, leave at “Standard Account set”, click FINISH.

In the side bar (list on left) under BANK deleted the two default Bank accounts, highlighting them in turn and using ACCOUNT – DELETE ACCOUNT.

If you have accounts with currencies that are not in your base currency make sure they are displayed on the Summary Page. Ensure box “Show on summary page” is ticked under TOOLS – CURRENCIES – highlight subject currency and double click – EDIT.

Drag and dropped the QIF file into the side bar (list on left).
Waited for import window to appear, this can take a few minutes.

IMPORTANT: Checked all listed accounts are of the correct type and currency and changed if required.

The “Date Format” should be set to the date format used in the QIF file not the date format you want to use in Moneydance. Select the correct Decimal Character. Do not tick “File was downloaded”.

Click import and waited to account values to file in, again this can take some time.
Some accounts maybe hidden under the “+” at the bottom of the side bar, added them back.

Some QIF files don’t include initial account balances. If you think this is the case you can add initial balance to affected accounts as follows.
Highlighting an account, then click ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT and add an Initial Balance.

For investment accounts QIF file don’t always carry security prices other than buy sell prices, so investment account balances maybe wrong until you update with current security prices.

Reminder are not included in QIF files.

Any accounts that are inactive (closed) should be made inactive by highlighting the account in the side bar and clicking ACCOUNT – EDIT ACCOUNT and ticking the inactive box. To remove them from the side bar right click and select REMOVE FROM SIDE BAR.

Now the real work starts to check balances and tidy thing up. This is especially true of investment accounts as not all action types are supported. But worth it in the end.

I have transactions as old as 1989 in my Quicken, although those prior to 1993 are included primarily to set basis for still-held-in-1993 investments. I suppose there are two ways to approach a conversion to MoneyDance: 1. Attempt to export all data from Quicken 2017 (the last non-subscription version, which is why I have it), or 2. Enter only the balances and new transactions (and a few transactions to set basis for currently-held investments), and use Quicken 2017 for reference to historical transactions (AFAIK, they don't turn off the ability to run the program, but they do turn off the ability to download new transactions after 3 years). Any comments on whether MoneyDance can handle 26 years of historical data?

QIF Export has options to include in export any/all of: Transactions, Account list, Category list, Memorized payee, Security list. Transactions is checked by default, the others not. Which are the most appropriate to include when exporting to MoneyDance?

You recommend the preview version of MoneyDance... to a new user? Who might not be able to distinguish between a feature and a bug? Why? I have already downloaded the "release" version... but haven't yet proceeded further.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-10T22:06:52Z2019-07-10T22:06:52Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

I would start by exporting all your data from Quicken and see how it turns out. QIF files were never meant for transferring data from one program to another, but it’s all that is available, you will need to spend time cleaning thing up when import is complete. If this proves to difficult the second option you suggested seems a good way to go, start a new set of data.
For information I moved from MS Money back in 2016, my data went back to 1998.

I would select all the elements in Quicken to export.

As you may have guest most of my first post is from a standard format, I created to help other potential users. As preview builds included fixes it can be important to use that build. At this time the preview and released builds are only one build apart and thus are almost the same. Before the last released build, the preview build held many improves for importing QIF file hence the recommendation to use the preview build. I have always run the preview build since moving to Moneydance back in 2016 without any problems. I think one of the reasons preview builds are not turned into released builds more frequently is the process that needs to be followed to get a released build into the Apple Store. Moneydance can more flexible by releasing bug fixes or feature add in preview builds on their own site.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-11T07:46:34Z2019-07-11T07:46:36Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I don't expect Quicken support via this channel, but regarding your comment:

Quicken 2017 doesn't seem to provide a way to re-open a closed account, but the transactions for them do seem to be included in an "" export.

Using the trial, I figured out how to do some of the weird things I do in Quicken in MoneyDance... they are still weird there :) But the import produced strange results; I decided to go with keeping the Quicken history in Quicken, and did figure out how to set up new accounts with current balances, for both banking and investment.

MoneyDance has the ability to schedule reminders based on any number of days repetition, which Quicken hasn't done, at least not by 2017 version.

Disappointingly, though, 5 banks that I (or a relative I help) use are not supported for downloads by MoneyDance in the present list. Once in my research today I saw instructions for what to do to request a bank to be support, but I can't find it again :(

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-11T08:00:51Z2019-07-11T08:00:51Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am support staff, just a user.

Only some US banks offer Direct Connect which is supported by Moneydance. Other US users and the rest of the world, including me, simply download a transaction file from our on line banking wed site and import into moneydance see https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/online-banking-and-bill-pay/m...

If your bank offers them use OFX, QFX or OFC in preference to QIF files.

If your bank does support Direct Connect then you can ask Moneydance to add them to the supported list at https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/discussions/financial-institutio...

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-11T20:34:20Z2019-07-11T20:34:21Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Very true.

I've determined that none of the 5 banks alluded to in my last message (nor another I had forgotten about) support Direct Connect. While Chase claims to support Direct Connect, Quicken isn't using it, and the Chase web site doesn't make it obvious how to enable it, even though Quicken claims they support it. I've not bothered to call Chase to learn more, but maybe they would be the 7th.

It is not clear that moving to MoneyDance, which doesn't support automatic download at most of the banks of interest would be an advantage over sticking with an old version of Quicken that quits supporting automatic download at the end of this year. Both MD & Q would support manually downloading transactions, but that is a multi-step pain in the neck... suitable to do once a month for account reconciliation, but too painful to do daily for fraud detection.

The Quicken web site describes their Express Web Connect in this way, which confirms the MD support claims that Express Web Connect is storing data on 3rd party servers (which can be a security risk; although daily checking allows early fraud detection to somewhat ameliorate the risk):

Express Web Connect is a one-way connection. Data is imported into Quicken, but Quicken cannot affect your transactions or balances in any way.
Access and retrieval of data is automated through the use of nightly updates. During these updates, Quicken logs in to your bank's website on your behalf. Generally this happens once a day and outside of business hours. Because of this, you may notice login activity on your bank's website overnight.
Your login credentials are stored on Quicken-hosted servers. This makes updates faster for you.
Your financial data is stored on Quicken-hosted servers. This provides a more complete history of your financial transactions than is typical for data stored on bank's servers.
We use state-of-the-art security measures to protect your login credentials and your financial data.

Nothing about the process described makes it seem like the process is something that could not be implemented via direct access to the bank's web site from a financial program, to do the same set of steps without using 3rd party nightly server access. I suppose the problem arises with being able to monitor the bank web sites for changes that would affect the automation of the otherwise manual process for triggering the download, and getting technical support calls with insufficient information to diagnose, and test. The developers would need to have access to an account to test with, at each bank, I suppose, and by "borrowing" a customer credential and accessing from a 3rd party server, they have more access to diagnostic information and can do repeatable testing until they get the process working again.

But without support for automatic downloading, there is little incentive for a Quicken user of banks that don't support Direct Connect to learn a new program that won't do automatic downloading. To enhance the security of Quicken, simply turn off the automatic downloading for non-Direct Connect banks, and do manual downloading, and stay with familiar features. Or to avoid the Quicken subscription model, simply stick with Quicken 2017, the last version before they went to the subscription model, and do manual downloading when they turn off the automatic downloading (expected to happen in January 2020).

The only feature "missing" from Quicken 2017 that I found in MD is the ability to do "number of days" based reminders. I do have some reminders that are based on "number of days" rather than "months" which would be nice to have supported, but is it worth learning a whole new program just for that feature? Probably not, although after January 2020, the answer might change, when the automatic downloading gets turned off, because then MD would also have the advantage of automatic downloading for at least some of the accounts.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-11T22:30:49Z2019-07-11T22:30:49Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am support staff, just a user.

I understand your hesitation.

For the future Sean the Moneydance developer is working to automate the process of importing transaction files from your banks on line web account.
As I understand it the aim is to be able to click a download button which will:-
Open your web on line bank account using an embedded browser.
Automatically sign in using your credentials encrypted in Moneydance.
Automatically navigate to the download page in your account.
Download the transaction file.
Import it into Moneydance then close the browser.
The process being learned by Moneydance when you walk through the necessary steps.

If it works it sounds great, but that’s for the future.
The only elements that exist at the moment is the embedded browser and when the file is downloaded it is automatically imported into Moneydance. The rest of the steps are not yet automated. The Browser also needs to be improved as it does not work with all banks.
Rome was not built in a day, but it does look like progress as if it works it should work with all banks with no need for bank support other than providing your transaction in a downloadable file.

One of the current features I like is the ability sync data to another computer and for me more importantly sync to my phone.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-11T23:25:31Z2019-07-11T23:25:33Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I saw some comment by Sean about something he was working on that might help, but not as much detail as you recounted, no doubt from having read many more forum messages than I have, since I just started reading yesterday!

What you describe, is apparently what Quicken Express Web Connect does, without doing it via a third-party server, as I was suggesting could be done in my last message.

Yes, it sounds great, and I hope he is successful, and once he has it working for some banks, I'd be glad to be a trial user for my banks, if there is some way to message him to that effect? I'm not thrilled with the 3rd party servers used by Quicken, but it sure is convenient. I kind of think that Quicken used to work that way, and went to 3rd party servers as a way to avoid needing to interact with users, and have the users send log files, when something went wrong, but I don't have proof of that, other than the recollection of being asked to send log files a time or two years ago when something did go wrong!

I noted some discussion of syncing, but hadn't followed up on that until now. Looks interesting. I couldn't tell from the basic KB articles I read if one computer is considered the "master", nor was it clear what happens if the computers/devices involved are "out of sync" for a while, with respect to entering new transactions. Obviously if "out of sync", and being used by multiple people in multiple locations, the balances could not be trusted to be fully up-tođate. But what about automatically entered recurring transactions, as an example of why maybe one computer must be designated as the "master" or would indicate a need to resolve duplicate transactions entered on multiple devices?

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T05:36:22Z2019-07-12T05:36:22Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I'm a fellow user.

Quicken have two systems of their own.

One is Express Web Connect which as you have worked out is an aggregation system that pretends is is you logs on and downloads the data to Quicken servers and stores it there. To do this Quicken has to have your username/password pair. I regard this as a security risk and one I would not personally accept, I do not care how safe they say it is and how much "protection" they have.

The other is Web Connect. This is not an aggregation system but accesses the data using your Internet banking account directly from the Quicken software that you have installed. It is a proprietary system that Quicken charges the bank for. I do not see this system as a security risk in the way it operates.

The only system that is freely available to all is Direct Connect but at the end of the day only a subset of U.S. Banks support this. Web Connect is really limited to North America where Quicken operates.

Moneydance though is sold world wide and the one thing that most banks around the world offer is Internet banking with the ability to download transactions, outside of the US this will usually be in QIF or CSV format. It is ambitious but Sean's goal is for Moneydance to be flexible enough to be able to download data using Internet banking from as many sources as possible in an automated fashion.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T05:49:10Z2019-07-12T05:49:12Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Hi dwg,

Thanks for your response. Web Connect, as currently described on Quicken's web site, does not seem to be fully automated. They describe it as downloading a file from your bank's web site, and then importing it into Quicken. It is not at all clear to me why banks would pay Quicken a fee for such a limited service... unless, indeed, it is more automatic than it sounds. They also say they don't even store the login credentials in the Quicken program! Which adds another manual step. I hadn't comment on Web Connect earlier, because it sounded far too manual to be considered an automated system, which is my goal, so I can check every day.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T07:01:06Z2019-07-12T07:01:06Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi v+ik

The following are some notes I made on syncing.

There are three method of syncing supported by Moneydance 2017/2019.
Dropbox Folder, Dropbox Connection and Shared Folder.

The sync method Shared Folder can only be used with other computers, it will not sync to mobile devices (phone etc.).
With "Shared Folder" Moneydance syncs using a folder that is shared across computers. This could be a folder in a cloud server such as OneDrive, iCloud or Google Drive. I have only tested OneDrive, but assume the others and more will work.

The following is an explanation given by Sean the software developer regarding other two syncing methods, Dropbox Folder and Dropbox Connection. However, if you did not purchase direct, but purchased through Apple, due to one of the restrictions Apply impose on Moneydance, “Dropbox folder” is not available. Note in both cases you need to have at least a free Dropbox account. With Dropbox Folder, the most flexible of the two, you need to install Dropbox client on all your computers but not on your mobile devices.
“With Dropbox Connection Moneydance uses the Dropbox API to talk to the Dropbox service directly. So, you don't need to have Dropbox client actually installed on your computer, but you do need to be online when Moneydance is running in order for changes to be synced. With Drobox Folder Moneydance will just read and write files to your Dropbox folder on your computer, which means that you need to have Dropbox client installed and running, but you don't need to be online in order for Moneydance to read and write the changes.” Syncing will occur when you go online.” You can also use either of these syncing methods Dropbox Folder and Dropbox Connection to sync with mobile device (phones etc.) that have the Moneydance APP installed.

When syncing with 2017/2019 you have a primary and a secondary computer. The data set is stored in the default location on the hard drive of your primary computer. See under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. Your data set is a folder not a file. It contains other folders and files. The data set folder is named yourdatasetname.moneydance.
When you start the syncing process, a syncing folder “.moneydancesync” is created in Dropbox or your Shared folder.
Your second computer does not have the same data set as the primary computer. Its data set is created from data synced via the folder “.moneydancsync” created automatically by the primary computer.

Once set up you can say add a transaction on one computer and within 30 seconds see it appear on your other computer or mobile device e.g. phone.

In normal operation Moneydance on your devices reads and writes to the folder “.moneydancesync”, creating small transaction files (mdtxn files) in such a way that there should never be any conflicts (at least not to any important files). Filenames are unique and the data is encrypted using your sync key (“Encryption Passphrase”). All changes are recorded in this folder and if any of the changes cause conflicts then they are resolved by checking UTC timestamps that are internal to the file (i.e. not the file modification date). All this is transparent to the user.

You can sync as many secondary computers and mobile devices as you like.

One feature that had on rare occasions created problems was transaction reminders. All computers contain the same reminder data, synced between computers, reminder window etc. To avoid conflicts a checkbox has been added to 2019 “Auto-commit Reminders (applies to file on this computer)”. This can be set on any computer. Good practice is to set this on only one computer.

For new users Dropbox has recently added a limitation on its free account of a maximum of three devices using official Dropbox applications, such as the official Dropbox desktop client or mobile applications.
If your computer is using Dropbox Folder, as you have to have Dropbox client installed this count towards the limit. However, if you use Dropbox Connection and don’t have Dropbox client installed this does not count towards the limit. This limit does not apply to third party apps that connect to Dropbox via the Dropbox API such as the Moneydance Mobile app.

For how to set up syncing see http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data

Hope this helps

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T07:37:47Z2019-07-12T07:37:50Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Very interesting, and confirmed my thoughts about auto-committing reminders.

I noted your comment that you don't need the Dropbox client on mobile devices, which makes sense since the Dropbox client on mobile devices doesn't actually synchronize files to the mobile device's local file system... but that would seem to imply that from a mobile device, on-line operation is imperative, even with Dropbox Folder? Does that mean you can't enter a transaction if your mobile device is out of range of an internet connection? Or does it just mean that no sync happens until the device is both on-line and running MD?

And, if mobile devices don't need to install the Dropbox client, it sounds like it wouldn't be a lot more work for Dropbox Folder and Dropbox Connection to be somewhat interoperable on computers too... allowing 3 to use DF and more to use DC (with the restriction those running DC have to be online to sync).

I note your link 404d. I've noted a lot of Forum messages contain links that 404. I suppose the Forum doesn't get its links updated when infinitekind re-arranges their web site. It seems that in this case, and maybe many cases of broken links, it is the domain that changed: infinitekind perhaps moved their KB from self-hosted to tenderapp hosted? A shame they didn't forward the subdomain so the links would continue to work.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T10:38:13Z2019-07-12T10:38:13Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I'm a fellow user.

I've been trying to work out how Web Connect exactly works from the user perspective for some time. I'm not In the US so can only go by what I can find and read. It would be great if someone that has used it could provide a description of it in operation.

Mobile devices are expect to be online, not an unreasonable expectation in reality given the nature of such devices. In fact Moneydance has no store and forward type capability, so from a Moneydance perspective everything is expect to be online however on desktop/notebook type systems in many cases you can install the Dropbox client which does implement the store and forward capability and it is this software that provides the offline capability

In effect mobile devices are using Dropbox connection, in other words the Dropbox API. Depending on the system on the desktop/notebook you could have a choice of using either Connection or Folder. As I said connection uses the API to communicate directly with the dropbox server. Folder however copies files between the Moneydance folder and the local dropbox folder.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T19:42:15Z2019-07-12T19:42:15Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

On my phone when I am out and about, I often add transactions to one of my accounts. The process I use is open the Moneydance app on my phone, from the list of all my accounts select the account I want and add the transaction, then go back to the list of all my accounts and watch the symbol that indicates syncing is occurring, followed by the time the sync occurred.

As a test I did not perform the last step of going back to the account list so syncing would occurs, but instead just closed the app. On my computer I checked my last transaction had not been synced back, left it for 30 minutes, still no sync, then opened the app on my phone. I immediately got the sync message on the phone and within a few seconds the transaction appeared on my computer.

So, it does look like the mobile app can recognises that a transaction has not been synced and then sync it at the next opportunity. I presume, although not tested, the same thing would happen if the phone had no signal at the time a transaction was entered, waiting for the next opportunity to sync. If I find myself with not phone signal, I will do a test.

Strange, I am running windows 10 and Dropbox Folder is listed. Have you installed Dropbox Client in the standard location, that is the Dropbox folder is at C:\Users\user name\Dropbox
If its at a different location or on another drive Moneydance will not find it.
the fact you are running the trial of Moneydance will not exclude Dropbox folder

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T20:21:29Z2019-07-12T20:21:29Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

With airplane mode set after entering a transaction the mobile app does not try to sync. Closed the app and took the phone out of airplane mode ,reopened the app and it synced.

I'm not In the US so can only go by what I can find and read. It would be great if someone that has used it could provide a description of it in operation.

So I tried. I deactivated the online services for one account, and attempted to reactivate using Web Connect. I started by choosing the account, and doing "Online Setup" for the account. The standard process led me down the path to use Express Web Connect again. So I started over, and found an "Advanced Setup" link in one of the entry panes. The Advanced Setup options are "I want to select the connection method used to download my transactions" the other option was "I want to enter my transactions manually". Choosing the first, the next panel showed a choice between Express Web Connect and Web Connect, with Express Web Connect being the default. I don't believe this bank supports Direct Connect, and it wasn't listed. I chose Web Connect, to continue. This brought up a surprising panel, asking me for the name I'd like to use for this account in Quicken. I started with an account that already had a name in Quicken. It wouldn't let me choose the name of the account I started from! Choosing another name, I continued, and it asked for the balance and date from the most recent statement, and set up a new account.

So I'm not actually sure if it is possible to select Web Connect for an existing account. Whether this is a bug in this version of Quicken (Quicken 2017) or whether Quicken simply doesn't allow you to actually choose Web Connect if it thinks there is a better connection technique, I have no idea. Having set up the new account, I noted that it offered me the choice of setting up online access.... but the account had been created by an attempt to set up online access! So I tried with the new account to set up Web Connect, and went around the same circle again, it wants to set up another account instead of establishing Web Connect access to the new account.

Unfortunately, this results in my inability to set up Web Connect access to do the testing.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T21:08:48Z2019-07-12T21:08:49Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Indeed, my Dropbox is using a non-standard folder location. Dropbox documents how to programmatically find the Dropbox folder when it is in a non-standard location at https://help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/desktop/locate-dropb... (at the bottom of the page, differently for different systems). MD shouldn't just "assume" a standard path, but should look to see where it is, since it isn't too hard to find it. But that probably explains why MD didn't offer the Dropbox Folder choice.

Sounds like the MD app is fairly robust about working offline, and syncing when it can. Good to know.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T21:28:46Z2019-07-12T21:28:46Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

As you have installed Dropbox in a non-standard location there is a work around.
Simply us Shared Folder where the Dropbox folder is the shared folder. As the “.moneydancesync” folder automatically created by Moneydance is in the root of the Dropbox folder you should be able to sync Moneydances mobile app to it.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T23:11:32Z2019-07-12T23:11:32Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Hi Derek,

With your testing it sounds like the mobile app may well have the concept of a queue being available so that it can pass transactions when a connection becomes available, that is interesting. It is a shame that TiK do not spell out the capabilities.

v+ik

Pity you could not get Web Connect working it would have been interesting.

FWIW I have found some published technical specs on Web Connect. What follows is the introduction:

How Web Connect Works

During Quicken installation, Quicken registers itself as a helper application for OFX files that are downloaded by the customer’s browser(s), thereby causing the browser to launch Quicken when the customer clicks the Download to Quicken button on their financial institution’s web site.

Once the customer clicks the Download to Quicken button, the browser passes the customer’s transaction data to their computer, placing the data into a temporary file in Quicken. Quicken then either processes the data, or stores it in a file for future processing, and exits. (Whether the data is processed immediately or saved in a file for future processing is up to the user and is determined by a Preferences setting in Quicken.)

Regardless of whether the file is processed immediately or imported later, after processing, a list of all new transactions will appear on the Transactions tab of Quicken’s Online Center. The “Compare to Register” function can then be used to add the new items to the customer’s Quicken register.

Quicken handles any account management required to store the data with the correct account by using account information contained within the statement data. Quicken will create new Quicken accounts if necessary.

What is clear from what they have published is that access to the Quicken branding server is required from the Bank's side and that data is being passed to this server, it looks like it is the User's Quicken username and I think this is being used to validate that it is a Quicken user accessing the information.

The document also talks about using the embedded Quicken browser to do this by selecting "Update" but it provides no details. there are a lot of holes in the specification. The document to me sits in no mans land, it is neither a user level specification doc nor I would think a system level document.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-12T23:29:26Z2019-07-12T23:29:28Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Hi dwg,

I have downloaded .qif files from banks in the past, and imported them into Quicken. It works, but it is fully manual: log in to bank website, navigate to account, to transaction history, to downloads, choose file format (there's usually .qif, .csv and/or .ofx). Save the file, or configure the browser to open Quicken when the download happens; in Quicken choose File / Import the file, choose the file, Prior two steps omitted if browser is configured) choose the right account, process the transactions via compare to register. While it has been a while since I did this from a bank download, I have a little PoS program for a hobby business, and I have it generate .qif files so I can import them into Quicken, and I do that at least once a month, or more often if there are enough transactions that I want to get up-to-date. Of course, for my hobby .qif files, I make sure the PoS program puts the transactions in the file location/name that Quicken uses as a default, to reduce steps. (Yes, I am a programmer, I prefer Python these days, and have noted that MD has the ability to invoke Python scripts, although I haven't explored whether that would be useful to any of my workflows or not.)

I have never before tried to get Web Connect configured, so I can't say if it ever worked, except maybe back before Express Web Connect was invented, but it doesn't seem to work very well now.

When I downloaded a .ofx file from a bank once, and tried to import it into Quicken, it didn't work if Quicken has no internet connection at the time of the import.. That boggled my brain as to why, and I haven't downloaded .ofx since.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T07:29:23Z2019-07-13T07:29:23Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

I have set Moneydance up such that if I click Ctrl - DOWNLOAD in a bank register it opens my default browser at the bank’s web page. I log in. Navigate to the download page. Click download OFX file and the file is downloaded and imported into Moneydance ready to be reconciled. Not two many steps.

Hope this helps.

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T08:30:43Z2019-07-13T08:30:47Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Hi Derek,

You've been very helpful with many of my questions and issues: I've learned a lot as a result. But I'm going to disagree with your "not two[sic] many steps" comment. It maybe isn't too many if you do it once a month, and only have two accounts to download. But if you have 10 accounts, and want to do it daily... it is too many steps.

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T08:44:37Z2019-07-13T08:44:37Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.

So I guess as from January next your you will need to decided what to do next, when automatic download stop for your version of Quicken.

Have Fun

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T08:54:28Z2019-07-13T08:54:28Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I think that those of us outside of North America have a different perspective.

At best we can get downloaded QIF and/or CSV files, so downloading and importing into any software is what we generally do, yes there are some aggregation services, but as I've said no one is getting my username/passwords. Otherwise it is manual entry. Given the position we are in pressing a few buttons is not seen as too much by many.

Much of my data is not readily available for download so manual entry it is in my case.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T09:00:10Z2019-07-13T09:00:12Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Hi Derek,

Yep, I'll be watching with interest any announcements about improved MD downloading capabilities, and would be glad to help test using all my accounts.

If it isn't there by January, I might have to cave in and buy a "subscription" version of Quicken to buy another year to watch MD development. I am not a fan of subscription software, and I'm not a fan of 3rd parties having my financial information. But I am a fan of checking on things daily. So there are conflicting goals.

Hi dwg,

Sounds like you'll be very delighted to get an enhanced MD download capability, if it works out (which I hope it does). I do manual entry of most of my transactions, and just use the downloads as verification of accuracy, and to discover fraud (and I have discovered fraud that way, so I like to stay on top of it).

v+iktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T09:20:57Z2019-07-13T09:20:57Zimport from Quicken 2017????

Alas the enhanced download is something I will not be using, it cannot work with any of my investment type data simply because what can be downloaded cannot be used for automated entry, it is all either PDF files of Dividend statements or CSV files that look something like bank statements, and hence totally useless for investments. Even the bank data of Dividend payments is insufficient because the banks do not have the information of the components of the dividend or any associated tax credits.

I do use online data to verify what I enter whenever I can but there is just some data I have to manually check off. Still maintaining information on a computer is definitely better than the pen and paper method I had to do before the PC.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/474267942019-07-13T09:25:42Z2019-07-13T09:25:42Zimport from Quicken 2017????

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi v+ik

In one of your posts you stated “I’m not in the US” so I was surprised, unless you have accounts with US banks, you could get automatic downloads, let alone purchase a new version of Quicken, which I thought was now only sold in the US?

derekkent23
