Thank you for contacting Moneydance support.

Currently, Moneydance only supports automatic downloads using Direct Connect. Unfortunately, there aren't any UK or European banks supporting this connection method.

By only using Direct Connect, we can guarantee that your username, password and financial data only ever exists with your bank or on your own personal computer, and at no point are your details stored on another server.
You can read more about why we only support this connection type in our blog and also in this article.

Some banks in the UK have recently begun using a service called 'Open Banking', and we are actively looking into adding connectivity to Moneydance. Unfortunately it is not reachable by Moneydance right now because it require a third party service to connect to the bank. We're going to wait until Open Banking allows connections directly from the software running on our customer's devices.

We fiercely believe that your financial information should be secure and only accessible to yourself, your financial institution, and anyone with whom you explicitly choose to share it.

Without Direct Connect, you are still able to easily import your data into the program. For now, the best way to get your files into Moneydance is to use a web browser to download them from your bank's web site.
We'd recommend you use the OFX or QFX file format if either of these are available. If not, use the QIF file format. You can find the steps for manually importing your data in this article.

We're also working on another feature (coming soon) that will remember how you download from your banks site and help to automate the manual import process.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to download our free trial version and experiment with the program.

You can download the trial version of Moneydance from our website on this page.

The trial version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test downloading data from your bank, and importing data from other personal finance software.
If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all data you have entered during the trial period.

You can find the Moneydance Knowledge Base here which will be useful if you're using the program for the first time. I'd be happy to provide guidance if you have any questions or need assistance getting setup.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions or need any assistance.

Many thanks for the in-depth reply. I will go over the knowledge base and see if the current version can give me what I need for now. Anything would be better than what I have at the moment....

Direct Connect is something that is only generally offered by a subset of U.S. Banks in the U.S. In the rest of the wold, and I live in Australia, we generally have to download and import transactions. There are services around that aggregate your banking data to provide a single download BUT these require you to give you Internet Banking username/password to those organisations. Something that I believe is a security hole big enough the drive a truck through. I'm not interest in how good they say their security is, whether governments or banks approve of then, the best security is if the only person to know my password is me.

From what I current see on Open Banking here in Australia it is geared more to you getting a better deal on banking services and being able to move more freely between different organisations so very much aimed at making financial services more competitive.

Getting data here for your own use is very much the download and import method the major Personal software has no automatic download capability (it is based on Quicken but Direct Connect and Web Connect are not available in it) so I would suspect that this capability is not even being considered under the Open Banking initiative.

dwg
