importing transactions from quicken 2002

I have been using money dance for some time but realised that there was some historic information that was not transferred when I set up the account.
I have now imported those transactions into MD and discovered that MD does not identify duplicates in the current MD account and transfers all the transactions from the QIF file.

Is there a way that I can avoid creating duplicates of every transaction but just the transactions that are not included in the existing MD file?

thanks

    Hi,

You could edit the QIF file exported from Quicken. Replace the .qif extension with .txt

Open the file in any text editor app & remove the dates you don’t want.

Remember to change the extension back to .qif when you are done. However, this can be almost as laborious as deleting the duplicates!

Interestingly, if you were transferring from MD to Q. MD beats Q in that you can export a qif file with a Custom Date Range. I don’t have Quicken, are you sure you can’t do this in Quicken.

It goes without saying that before you attempt this, make sure you have backed up your present MD Data Set. I would suggest creating either a Test a/c within your present Data Set or start a new Test File in order to experiment.

    Hi melfew

Just like to add the following in case in future your import transactions from you bank. The best import file type is OFX/QFX.

OFX/QFX files should contain a "Unique Transaction ID" (FITID) for each transaction. Moneydance uses this ID to prevent duplicates.
The following is an extract of one transaction from my credit card downloaded OFX file. Note the FITID number.

    DEBIT
    20190806000000

    <TRNAMT>-2.90</TRNAMT>

    <FITID>20190806000000001</FITID>

    <NAME>Southend On Sea Boroug, Southend</NAME>

    <CARD>Visa</CARD>

    <MEMO>On S XXXX/2.90 POUND STERLING GREAT BRITAIN</MEMO>

It does not matter how many times you import this file into Moneydance the transaction only appears once.
Also, If you right click on a transaction imported via an OFX file and select “Show transaction details” it should include the FITID
The QIF file specifications do not include the equivalent to FITID and thus you can get duplicates on importing if transitions already exist in Moneydance.

If you are setting up Moneydance and have imported your initial QIF file and then either import a second QIF file or OFX/QFX file from your bank which contains duplicates these duplicates will appear in Moneydance. If the duplicates were due to an OFX/QFX files import it’s important to delete the QIF file duplicates thus leaving the FITID transaction in tack. This will prevent duplicates on the next OFX/QFX files import.

    Hope this helps.
