split categroies
I have recently imported from several years data from Quicken 2015 into MD 2015. My intention is to begin using MD and move away from Quicken I am a log time Quicken user. Most is going fairly good, however, I have a challenge. Trying to balance an investment account that has check writing capabilities. I typically pay our mortgage from this account., Thus, I need to split the categories between principal to relive the liability account and mortgage interest for tax purposes. ALL, repeat ALL of the imported transactions only carried the principal payment over. Thus, the register is over stated in balance. I thought not sweat, even hough it will be time consuming, I will click on each split and add the interest category and amount. No way. it appears I am unable to split the transaction. It does not give me the split line at the top of the category pop down not do the function keys bring it down. Now, if I enter a new transaction from the keyboard I am able to add the split. Is this telling me i need to go back and reenter each transaction to balance my accounts?

Could you show me a screenshot of one of the transactions you are not able to split?
What is the account on the other side of these transactions?

i will try for screen shot a bit later
In summary - This is an investment account. I am trying to balance the Bank
Register function. I imported in a QIF file all the Quicken data. It
doubled many of the transactions with $0 value transactions. I killed
those, Now i am trying to correct the partial splits. On the categories
side of the split is the following:
Liability account for the mortgage balance
Category for mortgage interest.
In the import from Quicken, it accepted the liability account (principal
paid) portion of the split and recorded that in the Bank Register. It DID
NOT accept the mortgage interest part of the split, thus each debit is
understated. I thought I could individually correct each transaction, but
the program DOES NOT give me the ability to split transactions.

You can only split a transaction on the parent side of the transaction. I suspect in the case the parent side is in the liability account. Try splitting the transaction there.

I did as suggested and u r correct. It believes the mortgage account is the parent. I experimented a bit and this is not useable for me. Any way to change an account from being the parent. One would want the checking account to be the parent.
Thanks

Unfortunately the QIF file gives no indication which side of a transfer is the parent side and so it is determined randomly when the QIF file is imported. As you enter transactions manually into Moneydance you can determine which side is the parent as the parent side is the side that you enter the transaction in. However there is no way of changing which side is the parent on an existing transaction short of deleting the transaction and reentering it in the desired account.
