I want to
upgrade to El Capitan and switch to Moneydance. Should I:</p>
<p>1) purchase older version of Moneydance, perform
data/transactions transfer and set up Moneydance then upgrade OS to
El Cap followed by upgrade of Moneydance to current version (If I
purchase the older version would the upgrade be included? I am
prepared to pay the $50; I just don't want to have to buy two
versions at full price each); or should I</p>
<p>2) upgrade OS to El Cap then purchase current version of
Moneydance and perform data transfer? Quicken 2005 for Mac is a
PowerPC application and will not run on El Cap (I don't know what
this actually means for me in terms of what I want to do).</p>
<p>I have 15 years worth of investing history in Quicken which I,
of course, DON'T want to lose or have corrupted.</p></div>katjaktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-15T14:41:38Z2016-06-15T14:41:39ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>Hello Infinite Kind people. It's been 4 days and not a peep from
you. I don't know the answer but I thought it would be
straightforward for you. Apple Tech person just contacted said to
go with choice 1. Do you concur?</p></div>katjaktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-15T21:30:04Z2016-06-15T21:30:04ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>In my view you can sort of do it either way, pluses and minus
with any method.</p>
<p>One thing you must do is export all of your data form Quicken
into QIF format, obviously this must be done on your existing
setup.</p>
<p>Now if you want Quicken around while you are doing the migration
then you would do it on your current system, however you would not
need to purchase MD 2014 as in trial mode allows it for an
unlimited number of transactions, it is only manually entered
transactions that count towards to the trial limit. After getting
everything migrated you could then upgrade your OS - taking a full
backup of the Moneydance data before you do so of course, then
upgrade to MD2015 after the OS upgrade.</p>
<p>Otherwise keeping the QIF data in a safe place you could update
your OS install MD2015 then migrate the data.</p>
<p>There is a bit more work involved but my personal preference is
to take option 1 as the old software is still around and you can
look at your data in there if there are any problems you need to
resolve to see how it was originally entered.</p>
<p>There are various articles on migrating data you can see them
at:</p>
<p><a href="http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other-programs">
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other...</a></p></div>dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-16T14:08:42Z2016-06-16T14:08:42ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>Sorry it's taken a while for you to hear back from us. I would
agree with Des, there are benefits to each method, but option 1
will allow you to access the old software if needed, as Des has
explained above.</p>
<p>You can download MD2014 from <a href="http://infinitekind.com/previous-versions-of-moneydance">here</a>
to access the trial which will allow to import your Quicken
data.</p>
<p>Regarding the actual import from Quicken, if the QIF file format
is available to you, then follow <a href="http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other-programs/importing-data-from-quicken-in-qif-format">
these steps</a>. In particular make sure you specify to Import into
a <em>new account</em> rather than an existing account. And you set
the source to "From another program".<br>
It is highly recommended to export all Quicken data into a single
QIF file, as doing so makes the import process much smoother.
Please use the option in Quicken to export "all accounts" if
available. The one exception to this is if you have accounts in
more than one currency - if thats the case, then you can follow
<a href="http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other-programs/how-can-i-transfer-my-data-from-quicken-into-moneydance">
these steps</a> to import multiple QIF files.</p>
<p>Then download MD2015 from <a href="http://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software">
here</a> and follow <a href="http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2015/upgrading-to-moneydance-2015-from-moneydance-2012-and-2014">
these steps</a> to open your data with the newer version.</p>

have been very helpful. Thank you also Jenny for restoring my faith
in the Moneydance team. Your comments and links gave me confidence
and made the transition (so far) go smoothly. I just downloaded the
latest MD version. When I went to move it to my Applications folder
I got a msg that a version already exists there (yes, the 2014 one)
and did I want to replace it or keep both. I chose replace. Then
when I dbl-clicked to open it I got msg "To open "Moneydance" you
need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime." You didn't mention
this. Did I do something wrong?</p></div>katjaktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-17T00:29:22Z2016-06-17T00:29:22ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>As far as I am aware Java 6 is only required for some older
releases of MD, later releases all use Java 8 from memory and I
believe it is bundled on all platforms, hence something is not
right.</p>
<p>I'm not a MAC user however so will have to defer to someone with
more knowledge of this platform.</p></div>dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-17T01:17:29Z2016-06-17T01:17:31ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>In case this is important, Get Info says the MD app was created
May 23 2016, so it appears the replacement occurred. All Quicken
data transferred fine to the MD OS X 10.6 compatible version, and
upgrade of OS to 10.11 (El Cap) was also successful.</p></div>katjaktag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/400900492016-06-17T09:49:16Z2016-06-17T09:49:16ZIn what order should I do things?<div><p>Can you confirm you've upgraded your OS? As you were using OSX
10.6 this may be the cause of the errors you were seeing.
Moneydance 2015 is most compatible with the latest operating
systems, and we generally recommend using MD2014 when using 10.6 or
earlier.</p>
<p>If you have successfully upgraded your OS, can you try the
download and install process again from the start, and let me know
if you encounter the same issue?</p>

successful. Thanks.</p></div>katjak
