Change Account Category
In coming over from Quicken, I had my accounts transfer, but not into the correct category. For example, my phone bill is listed as a credit card, my Cash is a "bank account", as is my Line of Credit. How can I re-categorize these accounts into proper groupings?

Hi Jason,
Can you provide some more details about what fields you'd like to change? There are a couple of ways to do this in Moneydance, depending on the changes you require.
If a transaction has been entered into the wrong 'account', you can right click the transaction (press shift to select multiple), select 'Batch Change' then 'Account'. This will move the specified transactions to the new account without creating an account transfer.
If it appears your transactions have been assigned the wrong description or category, this can be changed in the same way, using 'Batch Change'.
You can search for specific categories by using the search box at the top right of the register.
Alternatively, you can download the 'Find and Replace' extension, which is a great tool for re-organising your data. You can download this within Extensions --> Manage Extensions. Select 'Find and Replace'. Once installed, you can select the Extensions menu (again) and choose 'Find and Replace' from the list. This will bring up the extension window, where you can search for and amend specific transaction fields.

Hi Jason,
Within the 'Bank' Accounts, there's no way to seperate these in the sidebar, to differentiate between personal and business. You could re-name the 3 business accounts to begin with something like 'Bus.' so they're together at the left of the register.
You could also use a 'tag' when entering transactions to keep these seperate. And you can create specific income/expense categories for personal and business accounts within Tools --> Categories.
You should be able to use the 'Batch Change' feature I detailed in my last reply to move your transactions to the correct accounts.
Create the new accounts within Account --> New Account. Then, for example, go to the 'Paypal' account. Highlight all transactions in the register, then right click, and select 'Batch Change' --> Account. Then select the new Paypal Asset account.
It's hard for me to say how the accounts should be categorised with no knowledge of your data, but you should be able to re-organise your data easily this way.

Hi Jason,
Do all the transactions you have imported have the same, incorrect, category? If so, the most likely cause of this is that your settings were slightly incorrect when you imported the QIF file. It's important to be sure the "File Source" is set to "From Another Program".
When importing your data, if the QIF file format is available to you when exporting from Quicken, you should follow these steps. In particular make sure you specify to Import into a new account rather than an existing account. And you set the source to "From another program".
It is highly recommended to export all Quicken data into a single QIF file, as doing so makes the import process much smoother. Please use the option in Quicken to export "all accounts" if available. The one exception to this is if you have accounts in more than one currency - if thats the case, then you can follow these steps to import multiple QIF files.
If your categories have imported but some data appears incorrectly, then this is likely a limitation with the QIF file. Most customers are able to import their data from Quicken without issues. That being said, the QIF file format was never really intended for transferring all data between personal finance software and as such it may contain inherent ambiguities that will need to be manually corrected post import. How much manual correcting needs to be done is hard to predict.
You can use the 'Batch Change' function in the same way as you have done for your accounts, to amend the transaction categories. Or by downloading the 'Find and Replace' extension as I detailed previously.
