I recently started again with Moneydance 2015.7 and mostly was able to import from a 2003 version of Quicken for the Mac. Due to lack of support and keeping OS 10.8.6 going, I needed to update to something that would run on my current OS and a program that was supported. Hello Moneydance!

I am finding plenty of oddments in the imported data. It will take me months to check and correct the approximately 8MB of raw data.

In a (Bank) checking account that was imported, I am unable to change a single category transaction into a split transaction. The button for split transaction does not appear not does the keyboad shortcut open up the split dialog window. Another bank account, I am able to use the button and keyboard shortcut to split a transaction.

What can I do to use split transactions for this bank account?
Thanks for any assistance.

You can only split the parent side of a transactions which is to say you cannot split a transaction that is already the other side of a split. e.g. if you enter a transaction in bank accountA and split it such that it transfers to bank account B and bank account C, you cannot then go into bank account B and split the automatically created balancing entry there.

Thank you Ben for your very prompt reply. I understand about how sub-splitting items could get very messy. I see that my description of my problem with imported data was not complete. I'm dealing with imported data covering more than 18 years and some of it didn't import as cleanly as I might have wished. I'm sure that the old adage "Garbage in. Garbage out." might apply.

In one case where I cannot split an item is a checking account with a check to a grocery store. At the store, we purchased groceries, cleaning supplies, and got cash. Two items are listed categories and the cash account is listed as a "bank". This edited check does not seem to be able to be split.

The second case, in a different checking account is a deposit of a paycheck. A pay check would have the base pay, perhaps some overtime, deductions made for various tax withholding, and automatic insurance payments. Again, these would be into existing categories. I am unable to edit this entry to split this deposit into its required parts.

Thank you again for responding to my question. I am looking forward to working with a more up-to-date financial program.

Could you show me a screenshot of a transaction that you cannot split.

Here is one screen section as a sample. A lot of the numbers are wildly off which is why each account needs to be checked and so many entries need to be properly edited. In this shot, the categories are way down on the list but at the top is missing the "Split" button.

Could you show me a screenshot the transaction while it is not in edit mode.

The transaction you show in your second screenshot cannot be the same one you show in your first. The amount of the transaction in the second is 469.19, where as the transaction you showed me in the first is -4320.56.

The amount that was imported was as a salary with 469.19 in the debit column. While editing it as income with the correct amount in the deposit column as 4320.56. Since I could not split the deposit, canceling the editing reverted to the original debit amount. Even trying to split it as a debit is unavailable.

I have discovered in the second account that I can completely re-enter the transaction and it can be split. Not exactly what I am hoping to do with all of my imported data.

Thanks for anything you can do to help make my future editing easier.
