Software update cycle and requirment
Hi,
Do you restrict the use of your software for only a period until the next release like Quicken does?
(Quicken transaction download is valid for 3 years and then user have to update to the next version)
Thx
T.

Hello,
A purchase of a Moneydance license key from our website allows you to use that version of Moneydance for as long as you want. We do not force you to upgrade, and have not written anything into our software to give us the ability to 'sunset' old versions like Quicken does. We usually allow you to upgrade to the next full version of Moneydance for free, and beyond that, you can purchase a half-priced upgrade. Again though, you do not have to upgrade if you do not want to. I regularly offer support to people on these forums who are still using the 2010 version of Moneydance, for example. There will likely come a time when your computer can no longer run an old piece of software, as some users have recently found for the 2007 version of Moneydance, but this is the case for all programs.
I encourage you to download our free trial version from http://infinitekind.com/downloads and experiment with the program before you decide if you would like to purchase it. The demo version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test things like importing from other programs and connections with your bank. If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions.
In case you haven't found it yet, our full user guide can be downloaded from http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/user-guides

Thanks for the reply. So, I am ‘test-driving’ your app and having trouble with importing my QIF export file from Quicken 2013.
The dates of the transactions are not imported correctly. The file has transactions up to end of April but the dates after import are showing 2018!
Any idea why?
Thanks

It sounds like the date format being specified in the import parameters does not match the format that is in the file.
I suggest checking some dates that are in the file to see what format they are in - the QIF file is just a text file so easily opened in any program capable of editing files.

Hi
You were right. I specified the wrong date format on import. That is ok now. However, the transaction imported all defaulted to Utilities eventhough I included all the categories in the export. None of the transaction categories were imported correctly and all were tagged Utilities. How do I fix that without manually going each transaction to edit?
Thanks

My guess is that you didn't first import your accounts and categories before importing your data. Are you following the instructions at http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-from-quicken-or-ms-money/...? If so, the step I'm referencing is number 5 at that link.

I followed the instructions as listed on the webpage. The categories did get imported correctly but the account balance is incorrect (more than doubled what it should be)
When did the import the first time with the incorrect categories, the account balance was correct.
So, it seems like the first step “importing account info only” did import in some transactions and caused the incorrect balance.
Any suggestions?

Hi T.C.,
Can you try following these instructions for importing your QIF file:
http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/importing-data-from-banks-and-other...
instead of the previous ones and see if that works better for you? I'd recommend creating a new data set by going to File -> New before running the import again.

Ok. This time worked even though there were duplicate transactions after the import. It seems Quicken’s Transfer type of transactions are causing grief in many other finance management software. I am also evaluating a couple of other software along with MoneyDance and they both had the similar issues. So, I was able to identify the patterns of the duplicate and manually deleted them.. as I have to do the same on the other two apps. I do like MoneyDance’s interface more and your support so far has been pretty good.
I any case, the checking account balance is now the same as my bank’s. Investment accounts and seems to be correct.
One more question, is there any way to customize what bank accounts to be included in the Summary calculation and listed on the summary page (on open) ?
The income/expense accounts should not be included as the transactions/amounts are already included in the checking account (at least the way it is set up for me).
Thanks,
T.C.

It is not possible to include which bank accounts are used on the summary page short of marking the account as inactive.
The income and expense accounts not included in the calculation of your net worth or the sum of your bank accounts.

Not sure where the error is then, the net worth amount is incorrect on the summary page.
However, when you click on the Net Worth section, a window pops up and showing the detail and a total, this total is correct and different from the total on the summary page.
So, why are the two net worth amounts different?
Thanks

Hi,
I notice on your old versions download page, it says
“If you have a license key for an older version of Moneydance, you can download the older version below and continue using it.
If you have an older license key and would like to upgrade, we offer a 50% discount off the latest version of Moneydance with your license key. To upgrade and redeem this discount, you can go to our Purchase Page <http://infinitekind.com/purchase> and enter your license key in the “Upgrading?” box, then follow the instructions from there to purchase a discounted new key.”
How often do you update the license key?
Thanks
T.C.

I'm not quite sure I understand your question. You don't need an update to a license key to keep using the same version you purchased. Future major releases can be purchased for 50% of the retail price, and if you do that you will get a new license key. But otherwise your key will stay the same.
