exporting all transactions in a single category to a tab-delimited file
Hi -- I am testing Moneydance; I've been using Quicken Mac 2007 for years and years -- and it has served me well for daily stuff and to fill out my tax worksheets for my CPA come tax time. I use Quicken's QuickReports feature quite a bit as well as their other reports. I am stumped: I am trying to use MDance to generate a tab-delimited file of all transactions within a date period that are in one category. I can get a full report of all income and expense categories for a time period using MDance's "Income and Expense-Detailed" window -- which allows me to Save the report/window to a tab-delimited file. This works for me. However, I'd like to generate the same kind of file for one category. There's just no way to do it that I can find, and I've spent several hours trying now. I can get to the window that shows all trx for one category a few ways, such as double-clicking on the category in the "Income and Expense-Detailed" window. This opens a window showing those transactions matching a category. However, the "download" button on the upper left of this window is grayed out and unusable - why?. I can select all the transactions and right click, but the resulting paste gives me text that is NOT tab-delimited (eg select the trx, right click and select "copy 15 items"). This is close but the resulting work to clean up all the text will be enormous -- there are no tabs or comma delimiters between the fields. I would really like to select transactions, then copy them to the Clipboard and paste them (with tab delimiters) to an Excel spreadsheet quickly and easily. I can do this in Quicken, but not, it seems, in MoneyDance. I sure would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have the same issue and/or might have a solution! Thanks!

You can use Command ⌘ instead of Control ^ on Mac

You use the exact same report.
On the Parameters screen go down to the line that starts with "Select :" Click on "By Individual".
The box below then shows all categories and you can just select the category you want.

Thanks! This worked!
For the benefit of future users, I've "translated" the answer for newbies like me:
You use the exact same report - "Income and Expense-Detailed".
On the Settings screen:
a. go down to the line that starts with "Select :" Click on Show: "By Individual"
b. and then select only the category(s) that you want to appear in the report.
This report now has the buttons "Settings Memorize Print Save Copy" at the upper right.
Click Save to have the option of saving this report as a tab-delimited file.
It's easier to then open this tab-delimited file and copy and paste the text to Excel.
Why the heck does MoneyDance have two windows that work differently if you select one category? One window does not have the Save option; and one window does. The window that does have the Save option won't let you "select All" transactions, nor will it let you right-click to Copy those selected trx!

Please send screenshots of the two different screens you’re referring to, that work differently, so we can understand what you’re talking about?

You can also use the extract data extension, to extract all transactions to CSV file

OK, here are the screengrabs where the report/window does NOT allow me to save to a tab-delimited file.
I go to Income and Expenses. It gives me a report. I click on the category Supplies. I get the window that I've downloaded to this forum just now. The column that says Category/Tags seems wrong -- it shows the account but not the category. However, this is indeed all trx that have the category Supplies.
Note that the "Download" button is grayed out. There are no Settings/Memorize/Print/Save/Copy buttons at the top Right. All I can do to try to export this information is select all the cells, then right click and choose "Copy 7 items". This gives me a text file but nothing is delimited by tabs or commas.
If I go another way to get all trx that match a category (see above) then I CAN get a window that has the Settings/Memorize/Print/Save/Copy buttons at the top Right; and I CAN then get a tab-delimited text file that I can easily export to Excel.

What you are showing is the transaction register with a number of items you have selected by hand, from there you can copy those selected items, this is completely independent of any report.
