Cheque#

I'm currently considering switching to Moneydance and am playing with the 2024.4 trial version. But Cheque# ?!
Here in the UK hardly anybody uses cheques any more - I haven't written a cheque for years - although I guess in the US they are still quite common. It's really just an annoyance but it would be good to be able to at least hide the Cheque# column even if you don't want to make it possible to remove it completely. And for credit cards, savings accounts and most other account types, Cheques aren't relevant at all.

The title of the heading is more traditional rather than being a strict instructions of what to put into the column.
So you can use it for things like reference numbers, for example transaction ID's for online transactions, I've also used it for Bill paying references and other indicators like receipt numbers.

OK, that would make sense, I suppose, if I could change the column title to "Reference Number" but that doesn’t seem possible.
It just seems very anachronistic to be working with Cheque# and, even more dated, the ability to print cheques. Who, apart from Americans, still uses cheques?

I'm in Australia and still use cheques as well as electronic payment methods.

OK - here in the UK relatively few people still use cheques. I haven’t written or deposited a cheque for at least 10 years. The UK banking sector did start the process of phasing out cheques about 10 years ago. I think the planned end of cheques was 2026 but there were lots of protests and the abolition of cheques has been put on hold but it still seems probable the cheque system will be abolished by 2030, maybe 2035.

So, in your case use the cheque field for whatever you wish, while allowing those more primitive to use the field for the antiquated reason.

It would at the least be convenient to be able to change the field name or hide the field completely, especially as Cheque# is not relevant for eg credit card accounts.

You can effectively "hide" the column by going to the column header area, hover over the vertical separator line(s) and dragging to change the width of the "Cheque #" column to its narrowest point.
