How to backup Moneydance 2015 automatically ?
Hi,
upgraded to Moneydance 2015 (Linux) from a previous version. Unfortunately you have moved the moneydance.md file from the originating directory where the previous version was installed to .moneydance/archive which is very much a local file. I had the moneydance.md file (previous version) on a server for sharing and backup reasons which is not possible with the new structure. Is it possible to store the .md data files at another location than the .moneydance/archive ?
Regards
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
In Moneydance 2015 your data is stored in a 'yourfilename'.moneydance file/folder. You should be able to store your Moneydance data in any location you wish on your system. Ensure that Moneydance is closed when moving your data set as this can lead to corruption.
Upon reopening Moneydance you will have to use the 'Open other' function to navigate to and open your data set in the new location. You may find this article useful as it details how to correctly move you data set.
You can also configure backups in Moneydance 2015 by navigating to File --> Preferences and then selecting the backups tab. Here you will see the location that Moneydance is using to store backups and the frequency of the backups taken.
You can also create Moneydance backups manually by navigating to File --> Export Backup.
The backup files created are 'yourfilename'.moneydancearchive' files and can be restored in Moneydance by selecting File --> Restore from Backup.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi,
I do not really seem to understand where the .mny file ends up after
conversion:
1. I open a file in say $home/download/xxx.mny
2. Moneydance ask me to convert and import - yes
3. The original xxx.mny is moved to $home/.moneydance/archive
4. The backup is stored in $home/.moneydance/archive/backups
I do not seem to find the xxx.mny in 2015 formatm (i.e. the data file
that Moneydance 2015 is using) - where is it stored ? (The original
xxx.mny is moved into .moneydance/archive).
Regards
Thomas

I am not support staff, just a user.
After conversion 2015 does not use xxx.mny. The conversion creates a completely new structure. As Ian stated this consists of a folder called 'yourfilename'.moneydance In this folder are other folders and files used by moneydance. The default location is given under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. You should not change, move or copy any files within this folder. You can copy the whole folder to be safe before you move it. Move the 'yourfilename'.moneydance folder and all its contents to your new location. Then follow Ian’s instructions regarding using the ‘open other’ function.
Hope this helps.

Hi again,
testing on I did the following:
1. Import my old xxx.md file - Success
2. File --> Export Backup - Sucess
3. Restore from Backup - FAIL with the following message:
Error reding file:
java.lang.NullPointerException
I have tried different variants of the above with the same result. I
have tried to store the backup locally and on a network file system
with the same result in both setups.
Environment: Xubuntu 16.04.1 with all updates Linux kernel 4.4-38 64
bit.
Without the backup/restore funtion working I am stuck, please, advice.
Regards
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
I'm not sure why 'File --> Restore from Backup' is not working for you but I do have something else you could try to retrieve your data from your archive file. When you create a backup a '.moneydancearchive' file should be created. Can you move this into a folder of it's own. Sometimes backups have trouble restoring if there is a data set of the same name in the same location.
Failing this can you attempt the steps in this article? It details the steps to restore the '.moneydance' file without using the 'Restore from Backup' facility in Moneydance. You'll need to zip up your archive file, which when unpacked should restore your data set.

Hi,
I did what you suggested - failed. After that I tried the steps in
"this article" and that worked which would suggest that your way to
unzip the files is the failing component. If you want me to test that
hypoteses, please, mail the unzip command/ script you are using and I
will run it on my system to debug.
I would very much like to have this issue fixed, if there is anything I
can do to assist, do not hesitate to ask.
Regards
Thomas
