New user. Installed Moneydance, select Import new account set from welcome screen and get:

Error reading file: java.lang.NullPointerException

Trying to import a Quicken QIF file.

    Hi Steven,

Sorry to hear of the issue you have encountered. We have had reports that the current build of Moneydance encounters difficulty when trying to import from the Welcome Screen, the developers are working to rectify this.

In the meantime, can you select 'Create a new account set' and then create a new blank data set. Once the blank data set has opened, can you navigate to File --> Import and attempt to import your QIF file this way?

Please let me know if you continue to encounter difficulties using the method described above.

Thanks for your quick reply. One note to importing from Welcome screen. It did create all of my accounts and categories.

If I try and import from the File menu, I get the same error.

My QIF file has all accounts, not just a single account.

    Next step?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hold this ticket. I deleted ALL .MoneyDance data and creted a new blank data file. Then ran the file/import and I appears to be running. Will see what I end up with when it completes.

Wow do I have a major mess. Looks like it imported transactions from all accounts into my checking account. At least when I imported from Welcome Quicken, it created all my accounts correctly. Now I have all accounts under Bank/Checking with stock account transactions in my checking account data. This is going to be a very short trial using MoneyDance.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sorry to jump in but I got this error too and in my case it was because I had no Currency set. I am sure you have this but just in case I am posting this.

I tell you... coming from Quicken 2009 - it is really, really hard to get the data in. Currently I am importing to MS Money and validating it and then to MoneyDance. However so far I am pretty happy with MD (I have tried out many packeages looking for a Quicken replacement).
