I have switched from Quicken and cannot restore the database backup; so how do I enter the cost, number, date of purchase etc in Moneydance, and how do I update the values, please?

Hi Ederhard
Take a look through this Moneydance KB article:

FWIW only Quicken can restore Quicken backup files, to move data from Quicken to Moneydance it is necessary in Quicken to export the raw data into the QIF format and this can then be imported into Moneydance.
The knowledge base has articles on this as well:
