Do you publish a sample data set that demonstrates all that Moneydance can do? If so, where can I find it? If not, I suggest you do.

    Hi Chris,

We don't currently provide a sample data set, however this is a great suggestion and I will look to see if this is something we can include on our website or within the knowledge base.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to download our free trial version and experiment with the program. The demo version is fully functional and allows you to manually enter 100 transactions. Imported transactions are not limited, so you'll be able to fully test downloading data from your bank, and importing data from other personal finance software.
If you decide to purchase the program at a later date you can keep all your data, the license key simply unlocks the ability to manually enter more transactions. You can download the trial version of Moneydance from here.

Thank for your reply. A sample database should include all variations of common transactions, such as every investment transaction type that you support.

I’m struggling with importing my old Quicken data. I have transactions going back to 1991. They offer little value to my current use of the system but I haven’t figured out how to strip it down without trashing my current accounts and data values. Also, account balances aren’t right after import. It will take a lot of work to rectify that.

A potential improvement that I see almost immediately is tabular management of accounts. I’d like to be able to inactivate many accounts at one time by checking a box in the list view, rather than having to open, then edit, each account separately. Perhaps the value of that will drop after I complete my conversion from Quicken but it’s a VERY high barrier to adoption by long-time Quicken users.

I deleted an account and was warned that all related transactions would be deleted. I understand why, somewhat, but that approach trashes other accounts that were involved in transfers. Instead of removing those affected transactions, your system should insert a placeholder in the transaction recorded in the surviving account. The category would be something like “transfer to/from [deleted account]”, with the deleted account being replaced by a category.

I’m hoping Moneydance works out for me. I know it’s not as complete as Quicken in terms of transaction types handled, but I’m wiling to accept that if the advantage of simplification outweighs the disadvantage of feature loss. Also, I have to believe that simplification will allow me to dramatically reduce the historical transactions I have to drag around in my current Quicken file.

    Thanks
