iBank
Hi
I'm looking to switch from iBank to Moneydance. I've imported my accounts. I've looked on the support pages and see iBank don't export qif files correctly. I've spent the afternoon trying to fix the errors. I've hit the 100 limit and the accounts are still not correct. Is there a way of extending this limit? I still don't know if I'm going to be able to untangle the errors so am not in a position to know that I can make the switch and hence buy the software.
Thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Jessica

Hi
I have a follow up question about Dropbox syncing. I am unwilling to give Moneydance access to my entire main Dropbox account and have therefore set it up in a second Dropbox account. Is there a way of having the iPhone app connect to this, or (because I have my main Dropbox account installed in the phone) will it not make the connection?
I don't know why Moneydance have chosen to request access to the entire Dropbox account, rather than create their own location and have access to that - do you?
Kind regards
Jessica

OK. One last follow up and then I'll wait for a reply to all three questions :)
- on the iPhone app there is mention of wifi syncing. I have gone to the extensions though and "Network Synchroniser extension" is not listed?
Kind regards
Jessica

Hi Jessica,
Importing transactions from iBank shouldn't have caused you to hit the 100 transaction limit, unless you typed them in manually. There isn't a way to extend the trial, unfortunately. However, we do have a 90-day no-questions refund period. You can go ahead and purchase Moneydance and, if it doesn't work for you, just get in touch and ask us for a refund.
You should be able to sync using your secondary Dropbox account by sharing the .moneydancesync folder from your main account with the second one. The mobile app used to support Wifi syncing in older versions of Moneydance. However, it never worked very well and was difficult to support, so it is no longer and option in current versions.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and thanks for using Moneydance.

Hi Ian
I hadn't noticed, but it seems correcting the import errors (eg duplications from split transactions) seems to have counted as transactions. I haven't actually had a chance to add a transaction.
Here's what I think you're suggesting:
1. Have Moneydance from my computer sync to my second Dropbox account.
2. Share that Moneydance sync Dropbox file/folder with my main Dropbox account (which is the one in my phone).
3. The Moneydance app on my phone will then "see" the Moneydance sync file.
Here's my concern: this then gives Moneydance full access to both Dropbox accounts.
Also, why had Moneydance implemented its Dropbox use this way? Are there plans to change it so that it only requests access to its own Dropbox folder?
Thanks for your help, I'd very much like to use it but cannot grant the program full access to all my files.
Kind regards
Jessica

Moneydance syncs using a folder called ".moneydancesync" that is located in your Dropbox folder. Only that folder needs to be shared between your two accounts in order to sync, not your entire dropbox folder.
The app requests full access because we implemented it before Dropbox had the option to request limited access. We do plan to update the app so that it is only requesting limited access, but I don't have a timeline for that update at the moment.

I'm either muddied or not being clear :)
On my phone is my main Dropbox account so surely the app is going to ask for access to everything in it (including the Moneydance folder)?

Ah, I see. I got backwards which account was on which device.
Yes, the app on your phone is going to request access to your full Dropbox folder. However, since this Moneydance desktop program already has full access to your Dropbox folder (like all desktop programs), there isn't really a danger in allowing the app to have the same access.

I signed Moneydance’s syncing into my second Dropbox account so I don’t see how it got access to my main Dropbox account?? (which you’re correct in thinking is also the one on my computer). I did not sign in to the main one when I gave Moneydance access so surely it does not have access to it?

Dropbox is just a folder on your computer. Moneydance (like all desktop programs) has access to all of the folders on your computer that your user account has access to. So, while the program does not have access through the Dropbox syncing mechanism, it could easily manipulate files in your Dropbox folder using regular file access methods. This isn't unique to the Moneydance desktop application. This is how the program is able to save files on your computer in general. For example, if you moved your Moneydance data set to your Dropbox folder, you would not need to grant Moneydance access to the folder in order to open your file.
Of course, we have the upmost respect for your privacy and the program doesn't do anything malicious on your computer. In addition, all of your Moneydance data is encrypted, so other programs with access to any folder containing Moneydance data would not be able to read it. So, you don't actually gain anything security by not granting the Moneydance mobile app full access to your Dropbox folder.

I don’t doubt your intentions. In any way. I just don’t know the security. I’m sure all the other high profile hacks were to companies that thought they were careful and secure.
Thus far, I have not given Moneydance access beyond my computer to my main dropbox account. I know this because I have two-factor authentication on this account. Although the program can see my files, it doesn’t have the right to share any information (inc its own account file) to anywhere.
When i attempted to set up syncing I did so by choosing my second Dropbox account. I guess this just isn’t going to work. You’ve been very patient, answering my queries, but it does seem this is a non starter until/if Moneydance fix the Dropbox access request. I work in the tech industry and I know if something’s not on the timeline it’s not coming anytime soon. It’s a shame as I think the program looks very good.
All the best
Jess

I'm sorry Moneydance doesn't work for you right now. I've attached the ticket for this bug to this discussion, so we'll let you know once it's been fixed.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance, and thanks for your interest in Moneydance.

That's great, thanks. I'll hope for it to rise up the project list :)
