MoneyDance will not open
I installed Moneydance last weekend and transferred my Quicken file. I'm ready to work, but I can't open MoneyDance again. The program is listed as installed, but nothing happens when I select it.

Hello,
Can you clarify exactly how you are trying to run the program? Are you clicking on it from a link on your desktop, from your Programs/Applications folder, etc? Which operating system are you using?

Just a bit of information: I can here the computer respond when I ask it to open what appears to be the backup of my data (C:\Users\dale\.moneydance\archive\backups), but nothing happens there. I can't seem to find any other file of my data in a moneydance program file, however.
I've also tried to run the program as an administrator, with no response at all. (I do get the request to make changes to my device, but then nothing.)

I started by clicking the shortcut on the start menu, but there was no effect.
Then I found the program app on the drive, and clicked it, with no effect.
I've looked for the data file, and found what appears to be a backup. Opening that has no effect.
I've now tried to run the program as an administrator, with no effect.

I am using a brand new Windows 10 laptop.

I decided this was the time to abandon Quicken, so I've downloaded Moneydance instead. I installed successfully and transferred files (a little less successfully), but now I can't reopen the program.

Clicking on the program itself (or a shortcut to it, like from the start menu), as opposed to a data file, is the best way to open the program, but it sounds like that's the first thing you've tried. That's quite strange that you're not even getting any error messages. Can you send me your errlog.txt file? This should contain any error messages the program is generating, even if they are happening in the background. If you're using Windows, it should be located at:
C:/Users/(yourusername)/.moneydance/errlog.txt

I've responded on the website. I'm assuming either works?

Yes, I can do that. Attached.

Ethan,
I will need to run an errand before it starts snowing hard, please be
patient if I don't respond right away!

Hi Dale,
No worries about the response time. I actually need to forward this to one of our technical specialists, since there's some strange stuff going on in these logs that I haven't seen before, so please don't wait on me. These conversations are usually more at an 'email pace' anyway. And yes, responding via email or on the website is fine.

It might be relevant that I created two separate files on that same
day. You might actually be looking at two sets of errors that are
unrelated to each other.
I had imported my QIF file as "from a file" rather than "from another
program" and thus failed to import my categories. So, then I imported
the same file (with a different name) as "from another program". Now
all the categories exist, but every account seems to be not balancing to
my Quicken records.
Someone on the public forum suggested that was because my Quicken files
were corrupted, and I'm quite sure that is true. That had been the
excuse for various problems over the years. So, some of those errors
might also be from dealing with the corrupt files.
Hope you can get this resolved soon; I really don't want to go back to
Quicken! :-(

Hi Dale,
Can you try upgrading to the latest preview release of Moneydance from here:
https://infinitekind.com/preview
the new preview should allow you to run Moneydance correctly.
If this however isn't the case, then please send us a new errlog.txt and we'll continue from there.

So far so good! I upgraded and then opened the program from the Start
shortcut, and it opened up just fine. I restarted, just to make sure it
wouldn't get lost again, and it seems to be working properly.
Thanks for the fix!

Perfect!
I'm very glad to see that everything is working! I'll close this discussion for now, but don't hesitate to get back in touch if you have further questions or need any assistance.

Henry,
Now I've been able to open Money Dance just fine, but we seem to have
created a new problem. I know that this account was showing spending
categories (because the first time I loaded the program they did not
appear, and I had to do it again.) However, now when I open my file,
everything seems to be coded as "checking" with no other spending
categories listed on any account that I can find. This would obviously
explain (at least in part) why all my accounts are out of balance, since
none of the transfers from one account to another seem to show either.
I'd really like to move from Quicken to MoneyDance, but if the files
don't actually import as advertised, I'm afraid this is not going to
work out. I've got around 18 years of records, and I simply can't cope
with manually correcting then all!
Hope you can help!

You did select the "Import from Another Program" option when you imported the QIF file(s) didn't you? If you don't do this you will not get any categories imported from the quicken data.
17 Posted by dale on Feb 11, 2018 @ 03:29 PM
Correct.
I did open it once, incorrectly, and got no categories at all, just as
you say.
I created a new file, uploading "from another program" and all were
there. Every account was now out of balance, but that seemed like an
easier problem then no categories at all.
Then, when I tried to reopen the program, it would open at all (and I'm
sure you can see the train from there, right?) Henry had me reinstall
an updated MoneyDance, but I didn't do any more work with the file after
that.
Now, I've opened the file, and virtually all the transactions across all
accounts are now categorized as "checking". Things are still out of
balance, so I seem to have the worst of both worlds right now.
I've got to start preparing some reports for taxes, so I can't just not
do any accounting forever. It's been kind of nice to avoid, but the
paperwork stack is getting pretty high!

I am not support staff, just a user.
It Is possible that Moneydance has opened your first attempt.
Look under FILE - OPEN and see if your second attempt is listed.
Hope this helps

I think I came up with a fix!! After I had reinstalled the updated
software, I was trying to open the same file I'd already imported. I
decided to give the poor software a fighting chance, and did a third
import. This one has BOTH correct balances AND categories.
Happy Dance!!
