Have 10 years worth of financial data in Quicken. Use categories all the time as my budgeting/expenditure process.

Does moneydance import and use my Quicken categories (even if they are called something else in moneydance)?

Will it handle 10 years of transactions on the import?

    Terry,

Preparation is the key to this working smoothly, or at least relatively smoothly.

Moneydance cannot read Quicken data files, as far as I am aware only Quicken can do this. So you have to export the data into QIF format and import this data

The category names in Moneydance must be identical yo what is in Quicken and in an identical part of the category tree for the import to work well. This is because there will be specific categories along with their location in the QIF file that you import and this needs to match what is in Moneydance.

In simple terms if you had Car: Petrol in Quicken and Automobile:Petrol in Moneydance they are NOT the same thing.

I therefore recommend performing the import of data in a number of passes.

During the first pass you chose to import account information only. This should bring in the accounts and your categories.

After doing this check to see what was created in Moneydance. Make sure all accounts were created correctly and in their correct classification e.g. Credit cards are set up under credit cards etc. Then make sure all the categories have been setup correctly, fixing any problems before you try to import any data. At this stage I recommend taking a backup so you have an empty account file just in case mistakes are made and you need to have another go.

The following article should help with the process.
