how to save your current file
whenever I do an update on my file, I do a back up. However, when I next open Moneydance, I have to go backt to the backup as the current file was not saved and it reverts to an older version of the file

Moneydance has an auto back-up feature. If you go to file > preferences and click the back-up tab you can select the location where your back-ups can be stored.
How are you currently doing your back-ups? It may be that the manner you are using to back up is inadvertently linking your data file to the back up so when you open MD it is opening a previous back-up.

I currently do and "export Backup" to the default location which is /home/bob/.moneydance/archive/backups/"file". I will change my backup location using the preference option. Thanks for the reply
