'Move to local folder' popup msg?

Just upgraded 2015->2017. Primarily using Linux and want to sync Mac & 2 iDevices. Previously using dropbox to sync 2 iDevices to Linux. Got tired of the popup msg and selected move file to local folder. That process removed data files from dropbox BUT, it renamed my Linux data file from "xxx.moneydance" to "xxx 2.moneydance" while the Mac is xxx.moneydance.

Linux is 2017.5 bld 1630. iDevices updated to whatever is in the app store. Mac is updated to latest posted at IK, same as Linux version.

I want to have the same dataset name (linux) and I want it to be xxx, not 'xxx 2'. I know it does not matter that the dataset names are different on the various computers, I just want continuity. Can I simply rename it while Linux MD is closed?

Furthermore, I have many years and many versions of backups and archives from all the different versions I've used, most of these are left over from when MD made the radical change in the file structure. Is there a listing of folder structures that can be deleted, or must not be deleted?

   If I understand you correctly you have two computers and two iDevices. You have been using 2015 and syncing using Dropbox.
   You have updated to 2017.5(1630).
   You can check version/build under HELP – ABOUT MONYDANCE. Make sure you have the latest build, at time of posting 1639, on both computers.
   Before version 2017 you could place your data set in Dropbox and open the same data set on your two computers provided you opened only one at a time. Opening on both computer at the same time could lead to data corruption
   Moneydance 2017 has an inbuilt sync engine which allows you to work on the same data set on two computers at different or even at the same time.
   When syncing with 2017 you have a primary and a secondary computer. The data set is stored in the default location on the hard drive of your primary computer. See under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. Your data set is a folder not a file. It contains other folders and files. The data set folder is named yourdatasetname.moneydance. In later build of 2017 you are prompted to allow Moneydance to automatically move your data set.
   Your second computer does not have the same data set as the primary computer. Its data set is created from data synced via Dropbox folder “.moneydancsync” created automatically by the primary computer. The data set has the same naming convention as the primary data set and is stored in the default location on the secondary computer’s hard drive, but it’s not a duplicate of the primary data set. They are not interchangeable.
   Before you start syncing make a backup using FILE – EXPORT BACKUP of the data set on your primary computer.
   Moneydance 2017 has an automatic daily backup and a manual backup “Export Backup” which you can perform at any time. You can set these backups to use Dropbox in case you have a hard drive failure.
   Assuming your primary computer is to be your Linux computer you can rename you data set from xxx2.moneydance to xxx.moneydance. You won’t be needing your data set on your secondary (Mac) computer as explained above, as a new data set is created automatically for this secondary computer. So, delete this data set otherwise Moneydance may get confused by a data set of the same name as the one it is trying to create.
   Also I would recommend disconnecting your iDevices and deleting the “.moneydancesync” folder in Dropbox to make a new start.
   You have a number of options regarding the syncing method the best and most flexible is called “Dropbox Folder”. To start syncing first sync your computers then add your iDevices, see http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data
   I would recommend not having more than two devices running Moneydance at one time. My set up is two computers and one phone. I found if I have all three devices running Moneydance at the same time I could occasionally get syncing errors, be warned. I reported this the Sean the lead software developer but as far as I know no fix yet.
   As for your old backups and archives once you are up and running without any problems and have made new backups delete your old backups and archives.

   Thanks for the well written explanation of some of MD's new features & refresher of several things I had long ago forgotten. Yes, it helps.

   It seems likely that when I pressed the "move to local folder" button I had MD open on the 2nd computer, thus that explains the name change of dataset. I don't really intend to use MD on 2 computers at same time, except perhaps if I enter something in my iPhone while out & about. I was just experimenting and it didn't go well. Now I understand how I can fix it.
