I just downloaded the trial version of Moneydance. I exported my Quicken QIF file, then tried to import it into MD as guided by the MD documentation. It failed miserably. The accounts were set up through the initial step correctly. But when I went through the next steps of bringing in the transactions, I ended up with transactions all the out to mid 2015. In some accounts, not all, the ending balance in mid 2015 matched the balances in Quicken as of today's date. But I would have to spend an enormous amount of time going through every account trying to "fix" the dates, categories, etc. I have multiple investment accounts from three different brokerage houses, multiple checking and savings accounts from my credit union, and multiple credit cards to try and fix each one.

So I tried a different approach and tried to set up one account as a new account and simply download the transactions from 5/1/13 through today. But it couldn't log into my credit union. MD had mine on the listed of financial institutions which I was happy about. But when I tried to set up the online information, MD wouldn't log me into the credit union and said I was using the wrong password. However, it was the right password as I later tested through Safari to verify that it worked.

So I tried a third approach which was to download a QIF file for the one new account from the credit union and import it. As with the attempt to import from Quicken, I again had transactions out through mid 2015.

Each time I tried something different, I deleted the file or the account to start with a clean slate.

I don't know what's happening, but it looks like I'm still stuck using Quicken as my personal financial software as nothing seems to work with my new iMac.

    Hi Bill

It is often something of a trial to export data fro Quicken. the obly file format available is QIF and sadly QIF is not designed for the task.

However in your case thee problem is likely just that the date format was not correctly specified on the Moneydance QIF import window.

On the Moneydance QIF import window there is a date format field. This needs to be set to match the date format used in the QIF file. There are three options. I encourage you to try the import again with one of the other options.

    Ben

You are right in that the problem was largely date format. Once I tried a different format, the date problem went away. However, I still have a couple of problems.

First, my main family checking account took me a couple of hours to finally get it to match up with my quicken software. There were multiple transactions that were showing up that had to be deleted. I ended up having to go line by line for each transaction starting at the beginning of the account in 2009 to check the specific transaction and ending balance. I am concerned with what I will encounter getting my investment accounts to work.

Second, you list VyStar credit union as one of the financial institutions that works for direct download to MD. This is great because I have two checking, one savings, a loan, and a credit card with VyStar. The fact that you already have VyStar listed as one of the tested financial institutions was one reason that I was excited about testing MD out. However, when I tried to access the account I kept getting a window popping up that says the password/PIN was incorrect. But it is the correct one that I am using. It has always worked with Quicken. Any thoughts on how to get it to work with MD?

Overall, MD looks to be my best alternative to Quicken if I want to retire my PC and only use my new iMac. I'd really like to see this alternative work for me.

    Thanks

    Hi Bill,

With regards to VyStar CU, it is often (but not always) the case that direct-connect will require different log on credentials than that of a financial institutions (FI) web site.

Without getting too geeky, there are essentially two types of connections that can be made to your FI. Web-connect and direct-connect.

Web-connect logs on to your FI's web server and downloads the requested data much like you could do manually as a client.

Direct-connect makes a direct connection to the FI's OFX server and downloads the requested data.

It is likely that Quicken was using web-connect to access your data, Thus the credentials that you use to log onto the VyStar CU website worked as well with Quicken.

    Moneydance only supports direct-connect.

Contact VyStar and ask them if they can provide you with credentials so as to log onto their direct-connect server. It may prove best to avoid mentioning Moneydance as your PFM software. Many FI's have yet to hear of Moneydance and will mistakenly state that they do not support connections to it. However, Moneydance uses the exact same OFX protocols as Quicken.

Be aware that some FI's charge a monthly fee for direct-connect.

Well, It has taken me all day, but I've finally gotten all of my accounts in MD to match the accounts in Quicken. Not an easy task to say the least. I was looking at creating a reminder for my paycheck. In Quicken, I am able to create a schedule every two weeks of my paycheck and in this scheduled transaction, I am able to have it match my pay stub with my gross pay plus all of my deductions. I don't see where MD let's me create a reminder with that level of detail. Am I missing something?

    Thanks

    Hi William,

Look to the following Knowledge base article. It describes entering the paystub information as a split transaction and then using that information to schedule a Reminder for it.
    http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/getting-started/how-do-i-enter-my-p...

This method demonstrates an easy way to create Reminders but you don't have to do it in that order. You can go straight to Reminders and create a split transaction Reminder without first entering it into the register.
