Kernel panic
This discussion is public.
I have been using Moneydance version 2012.5 (862) for quite some time, but for the last week or so, I have been using it really heavily. Two days ago I opened a file, and the balances had completely changed, even though the day before everything was correct, and I hadn't done anything yet. i needed to go back to a previous back up to retrieve correct information, and start all over again with much work. My work was twice interrupted by kernel panic, the grey screen of 'death' coming down. Today I created a brand new file, and again, twice my work was interrupted by kernel panic.
What happened? Or better, how can I fix this?

Hi
Can you tell me what operating system you are running?
Can you confirm that you actually mean a kernel panic, which is to say your operating system crashed in an unrecoverable way or do you mean only Moneydance crashed?

For what it's worth, over the past month I have gotten kernal panics @ 1-2 per week after never having one in the 3 1/2 years I had my iMac. It seems random, but more frequent when opening a Firefox window for me. So far, none when using Moneydance. So I suspect something in a recent Apple [or Firefox] update.
OS 10.6.8, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, 8 GB memory; MD 2012.5 (862).

Thank you for your speedy reply. That's incredible...
It is the real kernel panic, where the grey screen slowly descends down, and a black screen in several languages appears instructing the user to shut off the computer.
I am running 10.7.5
I have been running MD since 2010, and kept updating it to the latest versions as they came along. This has only been happening for the last four days. I had about six crashes, including about five minutes ago when launching Moneydance.
When it happens again, should I save the crash report that goes to Apple on re-launch?
Thanks,
Klaus

Klaus,
I am only a user, not a Moneydance support person. I have sent the crash reports to Apple, hoping they will get inundated and find something.
And Yes, I have the same grey screen and multiple languages message.
I will be curious to see what MD Support has to say.

Hi Klaus,
Can you please find and attach your errlog.txt file that Moneydance will create when it crashes? You should find and attach this file after the program crashes, but before you reopen the program. You can find this file on Mac OSX at either:
Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
or:
Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/errlog.txt
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Hi davet65,
I am sort of glad not to be the only person having this problem. I am also sending Apple the crash reports. However, I also know that Apple doesn't pay the slightest attention to crashes that weren't caused by their own software...

Hi Jon,
I have got two files:
The error log you requested, however, I am not sure whether I was able to force-quit Moneydance at (automatic) relaunch when restarting. I have to learn to do a 'safe start' next time it happens. There isn't much here:

It appears to be a crash deep in the OS due to a problem with the USB mouse, keyboard or input device? This appears to be an apple problem since they wrote the drivers. The only other thing that can cause a kernel panic on this system would be the non-apple kernel extensions, I see you have intego virus barrier, Ambrosia audio device (soundboard or wiretap), and something from trusteer that I don't recognize. These could be interfering.
One solution would be to do a system recovery install that would revert the OS to a clean state. Try that for awhile if it is working then reinstall the above applications. The other might be a defective mouse or keyboard that is confusing the system.
The kernel panic does not appear to be related to java or MD.

That's it, I think. I have neither a USB mouse, nor a keyboard, nor any other input device. However, 'Trusteer' is a program that our banks (Canada) want us to install as an additional layer of security. Now I see the adverse comments about it, and I downloaded the upgrade that is supposed to fix these problems. Once I did, guess what, Safari promptly crashed upon re-launch (required after install). I will uninstall now.
I will be out of the country from Oct 2 to 25. In Siberia, don't ask.
So I will be unable to pursue this further until I come back

kblume,
For whatever this experience is worth, I looked through my error logs and noticed - strictly from a novice point of view - that the following or similar message seemed to be present most of the time:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: firefox
So I switched from Firefox to Safari and have not had a kernal panic since dong that around Oct 13 - "knock on wood" .
I have no idea what changed in, or what I added to, FF to apparently cause the problem, but at this point, I really don't care to track it down. I have gotten used to Safari and kind of like it!
