Hello,
Do you remember where you were saving your data? If not, it is probably still in the default save location, described at http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/moneydance-2015/where-is-my-data-st..., unless you moved it to a custom location at some point. If you're not sure where you were saving your data, try searching your entire computer for all files and folders that end with the .moneydance extension. When you locate your data, use the open other option from the Moneydance welcome screen or the menu bar (File -> Open -> Open Other) to select your yourfilename.moneydance data set.

Thanks. Did not work. Found two files with .moneydance extension and tried opening them per your instructions but there is no data. What else can I try?

Hi Richard,
Can you provide some more details of what information populates within Moneydance, after you have followed the steps to open the '.moneydance' files?
It may also be useful to see a screenshot of your '.moneydance' search results? I've ensured this discussion is private so your replies can only be viewed by the support team. You can read instructions for taking a screenshot from here - http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/

Jenny,
Thank you for your reply. This is very worrisome as I've lost two years of financial records if I cannot recover the missing data. Basically I was using a 2014 version but was having trouble with online payments. Kept getting a message that moneydance couldn't connect to the bank or something like that that. I thought upgrading to current version might solve the problem. I downloaded the most current version. When I moved it to my applications folder the computer asked if I wanted to keep or replace the older version. I chose replace. When I launched the new version I expected to see my bank account listed there with all my transactions. But there was nothing there.
Two at the beginning of 2015 I converted to moneydance from quicken for Mac and I still have the quicken data file that I originally imported to moneydance. But the data in that file stops at the end of 2014.
I won't be back in front of my computer until later this evening but will be happy to send screenshots then. I don't think I have a backup that will help me. I am thinking of trying to run some data recovery software which I would purchase, install on a different disk and then run. Hopefully there is an easier fix. Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Unfortunately your screenshot didn't seem to come through. Can you try sending it again as an attachment (instead of pasted into the message itself), or upload it directly to this thread on our support site at http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/26079 ?

Hi Richard,
I can see from your screenshot, that you have both .moneydance and .moneydancearchive files available to you. The '.moneydance' files are Moneydance data sets and can be opened in Moneydance by navigating to File --> Open Other. The navigate to and open the data set.
The '.moneydancearchive' files are Moneydance backup files and have a different restoration procedure. You can restore one of these files you can navigate within Moneydance to File --> restore from Backup. The navigate to and restore the backup file.
Can you try opening/restoring the files shown in your last screenshot and see if these files contain your data?

I followed your instructions and found only data through the end of 2014. No transactions from 2015 or 2016 were found. I am going to run my data recovery software again, and do a deeper dive, and see if I can come up with any more files

Thank you. I am running the Data Recover software from ProSoft, trying to recover my lost moneydance transactions, which cover the period from Jan. 1, 2015 to the present. Will there be any other relevant files besides files with “moneydance” or “.moneydance” in their names? Are there any other relevant extensions? In other words, what search terms might turn up relevant files when the Data Recover software has finished running?

Hi Richard,
Moneydance 2015 uses a couple of different extension types. You have both Moneydance data sets (.moneydance) and a Moneydance backup files (.moneydancearchive). In older versions of Moneydance data sets were stored in '.md' files.
To open the Moneydance data set - First move your 'Finances.moneydance' file/folder to a location of your choosing on your system. Open Moneydance, and then navigate to File --> Open other. Then navigate to and open your 'Finances.moneydance' file/folder. Hopefully this will open without issue.
To open the Moneydance backup file - First, creating an empty folder on your system called something like 'archive'. Then move the '.moneydancearchive' file into the folder. Open Moneydance, navigate to File --> Restore from Backup. Then navigate to and restore your 'Finances.moneydancearchive' file in the new location.
