After linking successfully to DropBox on the iPad, I try to enter the encryption passkey. It is systematically refused with the message "Sorry, the password doesn't match". Uninstalling and reinstalling the App doesn't help.

    JP.kent,

Could you please let me know what OS, version of Java, and version of Moneydance you are running? This information is available in the Help->Console Window menu item, and will help us to better diagnose the issue. Also, you being asked to enter the encryption passkey on the iPad or the Moneydance desktop app? Do let me know and go from there,

I have Windows Vista 32 bits, Java 1.7.0_07, MD 2012.2 (846). I have already entered the passkey on the desktop, and I am trying to enter it on the iPad. This is where I get the error message mentioned in the title.
    Thanks for helping me.

    Hi JP,

I would suggest trying the following:

    1. Uninstall the iOS app
    2. Change the Dropbox password in File -> Syncing
    3. Disable Dropbox syncing in File -> Syncing
    4. Using the Dropbox iOS app or Dropbox website interface, delete the .moneydancesync folder in your Dropbox folder
    5. Re-enable Dropbox syncing
    6. Re-install the iOS app and reconfigure syncing.

Please try those things and see if you're then able to enter the new password and sync. The iOS app may save your syncing settings, so if it does and they're present after re-installing, then I would suggest reconfiguring syncing completely by logging out of Dropbox in the Moneydance iOS app, logging back in, and choosing your file again.

Also, there's a newer release of Moneydance 2012 (2012.3) than the one you're using, which fixes a few minor bugs since the 2012.2 version (though I think the syncing issue isn't caused by your version) and is located here:

    Hi, Scott,
Thanks for helping me even on this holiday period. A happy New Year, by the way!
I have executed your steps 1 to 6, although I had done this about 10 times already. I did it again to make sure. It didn't work. So I also upgraded to 2012.3. This made it even worse. Synchronisation with iPad is broken alltogether. A folder "$" is created under .moneydancesync in DropBox, but this folder remains empty. I tried entering some transactions to see if this triggers syncing, and it does, because these transactions appear in HandyBank straight away, also through DropBox. However, the iPad mentions successful connextion to DropBox, but says "No MoneyDance data files were found that have been configured to sync using the DropBox account". So I don't even get a chance to enter the passkey.

I have followed a few threads on the same subject in this forum, and I get a feeling that this is a structural problem that many of us run into. I have discovered in my installation of MD on the desktop that when I click the Enable button on the Sync dialogue, a DropBox is found on C:\Users<my user name>\DropBox. This is crazy, because this folder does not exist. I would need an option to tell MD where the DropBox folder is - or better, MD ought to ask DropBox where it is, and not assume anything. I have placed the dropbox folder in a non-private place on my hard disk. I need to do this, because I share this DropBox account with my wife, so we have to be able to access it both. I have set up a number of applications to connect to DropBox, and they all find this location without a problem. This includes HandyBank, which successfully synchronises MD with both our Androids through this DropBox account. So if synchronisation with the iPad needs the DropBox folder to be in a private location, I would rather give up synchronisation of MD with the iPad than start reorganising the rest of what I do with DropBox.

    Hi JP,

A Happy New Year to you as well! And I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems!

The way Dropbox iOS syncing should work in Moneydance is that it checks to see if the Dropbox folder exists on your computer first and if it can't find it, then it uses the Dropbox API to connect to it directly. And just to confirm, there's definitely not a folder located at:

    C:\Users<my user name>\DropBox

correct? Moneydance may just check to see if the folder itself exists without being certain that it's an actual Dropbox folder. If that folder does exist, I would suggest deleting it.

If you delete it or if it isn't there to begin with, then please send us your console log by going to Help -> Console window, then disabling Dropbox syncing in File -> Syncing, then re-enable Dropbox syncing, then enter a transaction in the register for one of your accounts, then press the "Copy to clipboard" button on the Console window to copy the console output and paste it here to us.

Thanks for your reply. I have used the Console and pasted the result hereunder. I have also taken a look at it. If I understand correctly, it states that two devices were synchronised. One of them uses the subfolder $, but if I look at it, it remains empty. The other, JP-HTC, synchronises well through handybank.
So I have a hunch that $ causes the problem. Anyway, my iPad does not find a moneydance file.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

The $ folder that Handybank is creating suggests that at one point you had a device that you named $ and Handybank remembers it. You can check for it in Extensions -> Configure Handybank and then click the "Forget Device" button if there is a $ device and you aren't using it.

The log file you sent us unfortunately isn't complete, so I'm not certain if you're computer is connecting to Dropbox or not. What I would suggest, however, is to create a symbolic link from:

    C:\Users\yourusername\Dropbox

    to:

    E:\Dropbox

Assuming that your user's home folder is C:\Users\yourusername. You should have a .moneydance folder within that folder if it is. Here are directions for making a symbolic link in Windows Vista:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-symlinks-in-wind...

Basically, you'll want to open a terminal by running cmd.exe, then run the following command changing yourusername for whatever your username is:

    mklink /D C:\Users\yourusername\Dropbox E:\Dropbox

After doing that, I would suggest trying to disable Dropbox syncing via File -> Syncing and then re-enable it.

Maybe we are beginning to get somewhere. At the time being I have only 1 device in HandyBank, and this is JP-HTC. I have never had a $ device, and I don't see such a device in HandyBank, so I can't "forget" it. So I deleted this folder directly in DropBox. Now Moneydance no longer tries to sync it. This is a progress. I don't know where this $ came from. I have also created a symlink from C:\Users\JP\DropBox to E:\DropBox. This makes no difference at all. I intend to delete this link as soon as the problem is solved.
I have noticed something else, however. When I click the Enable button on the Netword Settings Sync dialogue, the browser opens the DropBox site, but instead of asking for authorisation, it gives an error message: "This session has expired. Please return to the app to try again." This is a timeout message, and it means MD does not communicate correctly with DropBox. I'm sure this is a recent problem, that occurs since I installed 2012.3, because as long as I used 2012.2 I got the authorization dialog of DropBox, after which the iPad could see a file, but refused the password - which was the problem for which I originally started this thread. So maybe I should switch back to 2012.2?

  10. 10 Scott Meehan's Avatar Scott Meehan on 04 Jan, 2013 11:19 PM

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

Since it's not authorizing that does sound like it might be the issue. Are you using the Network Sync extension to sync? If so, this may be conflicting with Moneydance 2012's built-in syncing, so I would recommend uninstalling the Network Sync extension by going to Extensions -> Manage extensions, then scrolling down to the Network Sync extension and clicking the "Remove" button next to it. Then setup syncing via File -> Syncing and see if you're asked to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder then and if syncing works after that.

Before I started this thread, I read through other threads, hoping to find a solution. I saw that one of the most frequent advices was to uninstall the Network Sync extension. So I uninstalled it before I started this thread. So no, this is not the solution.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

After looking into this, I think you're right. If you still have a copy of Moneydance 2012.2, I would suggest reverting to it for the time being. We're going to have to look into this more on our end, but I think this might be a bug.

I don't have a copy of 2012.2, because I am used to installing directly from the download. In most cases it works well, because you nearly always want the latest version. So I won't bother to revert. I wouldn't be able to synchronise with the iPad anyway, because of the password problem. I hope you will be able to solve both problems in 2012.4. Until then, I give up using MoneiDance on the iPad. Please inform me when there is a new version.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

I think we've actually determined this to be a bug within Moneydance, so we've released an updated version that we think should correct the problem. There's a new preview release with this and a couple of other important fixes in it, located here:

    http://infinitekind.com/preview

Please let us know if this fixes the issue for you!

I have followed your link and installed the new preview (2012.4, version
854). This has not helped. Now disabling and enabling syncing has an
unexpected effect. A folder is created under Dropbox\.moneydancesync,
with a name that looks like a GUID. In there I find only two files:
mdata-v1 and mdsyncinfo.txt. However, I don't get the dialog to
authorise Moneydance, and Moneydance does not appear in the list of
authorised apps. I don't get the timeout message either. I don't
understand how these two files can be stored in Dropbox without
installing Moneydance as an authorised app. And, of course, the iPad
    does not find anything.
So this release does not solve the issue for me!

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

Where is your actual Dropbox folder located? It sounds like you may have a folder named Dropbox in the location that Moneydance looks for that isn't the actual folder. You can use these instructions to find out it's location:

    https://www.dropbox.com/help/89/en

    If it's not located at:

    C:\Users\JP\Dropbox

but there's a folder there anyway, then you have to delete the "Dropbox" folder at the location above, as Moneydance is mistaking that with your actual Dropbox folder.

Also, can you send us a screenshot of the window that opens when you go to File -> Syncing in Moneydance?

    Hi, Scott,
My DropBox folder is at E:\DropBox. This is because I share the same DB
account with my wife, so it can't be in a private folder.
In your message of January 4th you advised me to establish a symbolic
link to this folder. Which I did. This is why MD finds
C:\Users\JP\DropBox. This, however, links directly to E:\DropBox. The
link works correctly, because I have checked that the contents of both
locations is equivalent and changes at the same time, whichever location
is accessed. Should I remove this link?

  18. 18 Scott Meehan's Avatar Scott Meehan on 15 Jan, 2013 02:59 PM

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

Sorry, I forgot I had asked you to create the symbolic link. Since the link isn't working, it probably makes sense to remove it and not have a Dropbox folder in C:\Users\JP. After doing that and since having upgraded to the latest preview (which it looks like you're running), please try to disable Dropbox syncing and then re-enable it. You should then be asked to give Moneydance permission to access your Dropbox folder and then, since the bug we fixed appears to have been in that process, hopefully Moneydance will begin syncing.

    Hi, Scott,
Thanks for you patience. But this still doesn't work.
I have deleted the symbolic link. I have unregistered MoneyDance in
Dropbox and deleted the folder that it had created (leaving only the
folder used by HandyBank). I have cleared the console window. Then I
    have executed the following steps:

    Disable Sync
    Enable Sync
    Create two transactions.

Please find the result hereunder. Now I get the authorisation dialog in
DropBox, a folder is added in dropbox, but it still has only two files
and the iPad App sees no file to synchronise with.
In the console listing I see a null pointer exception, which could
signal a new bug: it has to do with Handybank, which has not received
    these two transactions.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

Could you try temporarily uninstalling the HandyBank extension? I'm wondering if there's some kind of conflict going on based on the logs. After that, please try disabling and re-enabling syncing again.

Sorry we haven't gotten it sorted out yet and thanks for all your patience in this!

    Hi, Scott,
I have uninstalled the HandyBank extension. To make sure nothing was
hanging around, I closed MD and opened it again. I cleared the Console
window. I disabled en re-enabled syncing. DropBox gave me the
authorisation dialog, and declared successful installation. However, I
still have only 2 files in the dropbox\ .moneydancesync\ <GUID> folder.
    Here is the result:

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

You should only have two files in the .moneydancesync/GUID folder you're referring to: mdata-v1 and mdsyncinfo.txt. After giving it some time to settle, does syncing work now?

  23. 23 Jean-Pierre's Avatar Jean-Pierre on 17 Jan, 2013 09:10 PM

OK, I've got these two files. I was expecting more, because the
    HandyBank synchronisation produces more files.
So the problem seems to be only on the iPad now. These same two files
are visible in DropBox on the iPad. Moneydance, however, remains empty
on the iPad. If I try to connect with DropBox, I get the DropBox
authorisation dialog, I authorise and DropBox reports success, but then
MD reverts to "Connect to DropBox (Not Connected)".

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

That's quite strange. If you try it a few times, does it work? Also, have you tried changing the user for Dropbox when authorizing? Are you able to connect to Dropbox with the iPad app?

    Hi, Scott,
I have tried many times. The reaction is always the same. It does not
connect. This is strange, because when I first tried (with 2012.2 on the
laptop), the connection worked, only the password was refused (hence the
subject of this thread). Dropbox works properly on the iPad, I use
    Evernote without a problem.
What do you mean by changing the user for Dropbox when authorising?

    Hi, Scott,
It works! Inspired by your advice to give it some time to settle, I
didn't try to use it for 2 days. And today I tried again. The connection
was established, the password was accepted, and I suddenly saw all my
transactions! Thanks for your patient help!
However, I'm puzzled. What is the effect of time on a program that you
    don't use?

    Hi, Scott,
Solving the iPad problem involved, among other things, disabling the
HandyBank extension (see your advice in post 21). Now that the iPad
works properly, I have re-installed the HandyBank extension, and tried
to re-establish the synchronisation process. It no longer works. I have
tried everything: I have even cleared the data in the mobile device and
given the device another name. In the extension on the laptop I
invariably get the message "No new devices running HandyBank were
found". It looks like uninstalling and re-installing the HandyBank
extension has left some sort of information behind that prevents from
    finding new devices.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

Well, I'm glad to hear that you got Dropbox syncing working, but sorry to hear that HandyBank stopped working in the process. I think that since there's a bit of a delay in sending the syncing data with Dropbox that sometimes it just takes longer than other times to get the syncing data matched up (I was thinking 5-10 minutes would probably be enough time--I should have made that clearer).

As for HandyBank, I'm also unable to get it to find my device running HandyBank, so I emailed the HandyBank developer with the error I was getting while trying to get it setup and will see what I hear back. It looks like a bug to me, but I'll have to wait until I hear back to have more detailed information.

    HI, Scott,
Thanks for communicating with the HandyBank developers. I hope a
    solution will be found soon.
As for the delay, 5-10 minutes are definitely not enough. I have not
been spending all my time on MoneyDance, so the stuff was left waiting
many times - for hours, for a whole night, it never worked. It only came
to life after I had left it alone for two whole days.

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

I heard back from the HandyBank developer--he said that this issue is a bug in the current build of the HandyBank extension (547) and that it's been fixed in build 548, which we should be pushing as an update within the next few days. I'll post an update here when I see it released and you may also want to check for the update tomorrow because I'm not exactly sure when it will be pushed to the extensions list.
