Hi,

I recently made the switch from Windows 7 x64 to Fedora 17 x86_64 with the KDE spin. I really love Linux but I have one software program I have to use but cannot find a Linux application. I was forced to install Windows in a virtual machine. I really do not like going into Windows.

With all that said, the Windows software I have to use is VersaCheck Gold 2007 (http://www.versacheck.com/web/creation.asp). I don't have checks to write out by hand. I don't have printed formatted checks. I print the complete check on blank check paper stock. Including this option in your software would greatly enhance it. I am confident if your users had this option they would also print checks on blank check paper. It is much cheaper doing it this way. This would also give you a huge advantage over the other personal finance applications.

I do not know how difficult this option would be to add this unique feature. I would like it if you looked at the VersaCheck website to see if this is a feature you would consider including in a future version of your software.

Thanks for taking the time to read my suggestion

    Hi nrlacasse,

Thanks for the suggestion for improving Moneydance! I have created a ticket in our ticketing system with your suggestion, so the developers will be looking into it.

In the meantime, have you tried running VersaCheck Gold in Wine?

    http://www.winehq.org/

It may be able to run it well and not require booting up an entire virtual machine. It should be available in Fedora's package (software) manager, if you'd like to try it.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

    Hi,

Thanks so much for creating a ticket for my suggestion. I hope this suggestion is feasible. I did try Wine and the program did not work properly. I just signed up for your newsletter so I can stay informed about your program.

    Hi Norman

This question has come up a coupleof times before and I think it is rather unlikely that we will implement this ticket.

The primary reason being that the line at the bottom of the check that contains the account number and routing number (sort code if you are in Europe) is called the MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) line. This MIRC line is printed with a special toner that contains iron oxide. This line is scanned and read by a computer. You can find out more about the MICR line at wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_ink_character_recognition

While it may certainly be the case that some banks will accept a check that has not had this line printed in magnetic ink it is certainly not the case that all banks will accept such checks. We at Moneydance do not want to be in the situation where people print checks from Moneydance that get rejected.

This is further complicated by the fact that Moneydance is distributed internationally. The standards for this line vary from country to country.

Give that very few of our users will have access to an MICR printer we do not want to give the false impression that Moneydance can print on completely blank check stock as in many cases such checks will not be accepted.

    Sincerely
    Ben Spencer

    Hi,

That does make a lot of sense. I never thought about the different standards for different countries and the magnetic ink before. I use regular ink when I print checks. Thank you for considering this though and explaining the situation to me.
