Since yesterday I can't download transactions from Capital One 360 anymore.

How can I fix the issue?

Jenny...Can you please investigate this a little further before we give up on Capital One 360? Has anybody else been told by Cap One that they still support OFX?

  2. 32 Lori's Avatar Lori on 26 Nov, 2018 07:37 PM

I have two different accounts with Capital One banking, a 360 Savings and a Money Market. The 360 Savings account downloaded today, the Money Market is giving an error. They still support this, so something is broken.

  3. 33 chobe2's Avatar chobe2 on 26 Nov, 2018 08:22 PM

Lori...that's great that you were able to download from one of your accounts. I can't even try it now since Capital One 360 isn't even on the online banking setup list in MD any longer. Jenny, is there anyway we can add them back?

  4. 34 Jens's Avatar Jens on 26 Nov, 2018 11:41 PM

I pulled copy of my MD data from last week out of my daily backups.
Trying to download my Checking and Money Market accounts still results in
the same timeouts as before. So, I can't confirm Lori's observation.

I cannot even find the "Personal Finance Management Tool Access Code"
on the CapOne website anywhere, or get a hit on it when searching their
help sides for that phrase. Maybe I missed it though, since that latest web
    layout is somewhat ... interesting?

chobe2, maybe you can provide that manager's contact details to the
MD team for them to verify what actually is going on.

I'll be patiently watching as to where this is going.

    Hi All,
Thanks for everyone's input on this. When we try to connect to the advertised Capital One 360 service the connection simply times out, which should mean that no connections are possible using their direct interface. We can re-add it, but I am very doubtful that it will do any good if their service isn't allowing any connections, including the connection that MD makes to query the capabilities of the server.

As for the access code, this page seems to describe it, but I don't know where to go to actually acquire one: https://www.capitalone.com/support-center/bank/personal-finance-acc...

Of course an access code still won't help if the server isn't even accepting connections.

    Thanks,

  6. 36 chobe2's Avatar chobe2 on 27 Nov, 2018 12:44 PM

I can tell you all where to go to get your access code: click on one of your accounts, click on Account Services & Settings, click on Privacy in the popup window, click on the Access Code tab. Unfortunately, I did not get the name or ID of the manager that I talked to. When I talked to them previously, the manager seemed very surprised when I told them that access to their bank had been removed from my software. I will contact them again with the information that Sean Reilly posted.

  7. 37 chobe2's Avatar chobe2 on 27 Nov, 2018 02:03 PM

OK...I just spoke to Capital One 360 again and they were not much help. He told me to contact OFX since they are a 3rd party provider for more information and help. I attempted to do that but didn't get very far.

At this point, I think I will just transfer my accounts to a different bank...unless Infinite Kind wants to investigate this problem a little more. As I said before, I am still not convinced that Cap One 360 has stopped their OFX support.

OK, although if you can wait for a bit longer and would like to continue using Cap One 360 we have a new connection mechanism coming up that should make it easier to download from them (or any bank with a web site). I hesitate to say more until it's released but I'm hoping to release a beta of the new version any day now.

    Thanks,
    Sean

I called Capital One and was also told that OFX is dead. The customer service agent had to talk to a technical guy via an online chat internal to Capital One. As an aside the customer service agent said Capital One and Capital One 360 back ends are being merged and "things are disappearing without notice" sometimes.

Any other suggestions for Washington DC area or online banks that still support OFX?

Confirmed, as i just tried the restore financial institution link for Capital One 360 (that's for doing that!!) and tried the process with my user and Access PIN. No joy!
Patiently going to wait for Sean new addition to MD! No matter what has happened, I'm so please with MD over Quicken on my Mac and have been for probably 7+ years!
    Thanks Sean and team Moneydance!!!

Chris W...After some research, I think I will be switching to Discover Bank. First I will wait a few days to see what Moneydance's "new connection mechanism" is.

chobe2, Discover looks like a pretty good deal with no fees, high rates, and low penalties for CDs. If you do switch I would be interested to know how well it works out for you.

  16. 46 chobe2's Avatar chobe2 on 28 Nov, 2018 04:34 PM

com...I can tell you that I already have a CD account with them so I set up online banking with no trouble at all. It downloaded all transactions. They do not require a special access code...just your online login ID and password. I went ahead and opened the saving account which should be funded today.

OFXhome.com keeps a pretty big list of institutions that have, and have had, OFX (direct access) services. Be sure to check the validation notice at bottom to see if the institution still has the service - Capital One 360, for instance shows their services went offline 11/24/18.

Capital One got their service when they acquired ING. They first dropped Bill Pay and now appear to have dropped the whole thing.

The last time I checked Discover Bank (few months ago), they did not offer OFX. Discover Card does do OFX transaction download.

Banks in CA that have OFX (including Bill Pay) are Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo and US Bank. Of these, only Wells Fargo is still free for Bill Pay. Rabo Bank has OFX transaction download only. US Bank charges 3.95/mo for Bill Pay.

Anyone know another place that has a money market that still does OFX and is at 2% or higher? :)

  19. 49 chobe2's Avatar chobe2 on 28 Nov, 2018 06:02 PM

That's strange. I just went on OFXhome.com and sure enough, it says that Discover failed OFX test although I am able to connect and download through MD. I hope they're not on their way out also.

My update: I went to PNC bank and had to go through some process to open an account that works with Quicken / OFX. Their standard "Virtual Wallet" accounts don't offer Quicken (but do offer a $300 account bonus for opening it). I had to create a regular, old style, checking account.

It seems like many banks are dumping OFX support and the nice folks at Infinite Kind need to continue working on an alternative solution. I'm willing to pay for it. I love Moneydance and can't stand or even use Quicken as we have PCs and Macs in the family.

I'm currently researching MD as an alternative to the evil Quicken! So far it is working fine for me. The one complicated issue is OFX. I understand as a SW dev that if a bank unilaterally drops support for OFX it's not the fault of the MD developers/maintainers. Y'all are doing great work.

I guess my question is about the future capability that Sean referred to above. I' in a testing mode right now so if and when a beta copy is available I will happily test it with Regions, BoA, Vanguard, Discover, Amex, Grow Fin, etc.

Can you send us an update via email? or how can we help?
    Thanks for a great product,
    R

So doing a bit of research, it looks like there are several financial transaction aggregation services out there that Moneydance could integrate:

    https://www.finicity.com/
    https://data.mx.com/
    https://www.quovo.com/quovo-solutions/

Other finance application, such as YNAB, use these services for pulling transaction data. The only problem here would be the cost.. but I would be willing to pay a nominal subscription fee to be able to sync all my accounts automatically.

    Hi Andy,

Just for the record, I can pretty much guarantee that we will never use one of those services. They require any software that uses them to upload your online banking login and password to their servers. Not only that, but they also then have access to all of your transactions. So not only are those services a huge target for hacking but they are also a massive privacy violation waiting to happen. With even companies like Google and Facebook losing hundreds of thousands or even millions of people's data, would you really want that information stolen?a

Our solution is a sort of aggregation service that happens on your own device. It will keep your financial information under your control and shared with nobody aside from yourself and your bank. It also means that information is decentralized, so there is no big target for hackers.

    Thanks,
    Sean

  24. 54 andyschmid's Avatar andyschmid on 28 Nov, 2018 09:50 PM

That sounds great, Sean. If we can retain the same level of convenience with the added security and privacy I agree that is a way better solution. Looking forward to the next MD release.

  25. 55 Ralph's Avatar Ralph on 28 Nov, 2018 09:59 PM

I agree that the last thing we want is to have yet another third party collecting and accessing our private data. And I'm not even paranoid, yet!

Do we have any evidence that the financial institutions are trying to break software like MD for their own agenda or is it simply incompetence of a too large organization?

Related to that answer is there any viability in WebConnect or Express Web Connect in this environment?
    R

  26. 56 avp2's Avatar avp2 on 28 Nov, 2018 11:44 PM

It appears Discover Bank does now have transaction download service, but not Bill Pay. It could be that the Discover Bank info in OFXhome is bad and has not been updated since the fail date. I do not have a Discover Bank account so do not know.

Discover Card also reads failed in OFXhome, but its OFX info is correct/works as it is what I am currently using in MD.

  27. 57 dwg's Avatar dwg on 29 Nov, 2018 02:29 AM

Express Web Connect is fundamentally an aggregation service, you are giving your bank login credentials to Quicken.

Web connect is proprietary to Quicken and I think that attempts to use this are validated to a Quicken server.

  28. Support Staff 58 Sean Reilly's Avatar Sean Reilly on 29 Nov, 2018 09:20 AM

    Hi Ralph,

I don't see any evidence that the financial institutions are trying to break software like moneydance. They don't go out of their way to make it easy, but many banks don't spend much energy making things easy for customers either. My guess is that they don't view direct API access as worth their resources to create (or outsource) since it's not directly connected to their revenue.

As for Express Web Connect, avp2 is correct that it is also an aggregation service run by Quicken. (non-Express) Web Connect is basically an embedded browser that used to be included with Quicken but has been deprecated since Intuit moved that function into the aggregation service. Moneydance will be able to talk to most of the same web interfaces (just on the client side instead of delegating it), and fall back to an embedded browser for any sites that we don't have automated yet.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Before I found this discussion I spoke with "Tara" at Capital One 360 this morning. She said Quicken was working fine with Capital One, and If I still had problems I should try the access code route, if that didn't work then talk with the folks at Quicken.

So, Please add me to the list of customers looking for a solution to the Capital One 360 issue.

    Thanks,
