Hotkey to Focus on Accounts Pulldown
I would like to please suggest adding a keyboard shortcut to put focus on the Accounts pulldown list. Afterwards, you could use the arrow keys and enter to select another account. I love MD and use it nearly daily. Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that is a fine idea. I have a created a ticket for this suggestion on our suggestion and bug tracking system. Here is the link to the ticket:

If you register and log into the trac system you can vote on this ticket. The mor votes a ticket gets the more likely it will be implemented.

I am following up this thread. I saw the ticket had been changed to closed because there are now 2 ways to achieve this. I have upgraded to MD2010.
But, I cannot find those 2 ways to put the focus on the "My Finances" dropdown menu. Could you please elaborate? Is it a keyboard shortcut? I scanned the help document and did not see anything. Apple+shift+H is a great feature, but I still need to grab my mouse to change accounts. Thanks for your time.

This is an interesting topic. I've actually gotten it to work but it's tricky trying to get focus onto the 'My Finances' drop down list or more accurately the two up and down arrows to the left of the 'My Finances' drop down list. Once focus is on them, use the Spacebar to open the drop down list.
I'm using Windows so you may need to try dfferent key combos. (Cmd instead of Ctrl)
When focus is on an item in the sidebar, Hold down Ctrl-Shift, then hit Tab. This moves focus to the Seach field in the upper right hand corner. Continue holding down Ctrl-Shift and hit Tab again, focus is now put on the two up and down arrows next to 'My Finances'. Hit the Spacebar to open the list, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move up and down the list. This also appears to work when focus is on a transaction in a register.

Edit: After a little more tinkering... When focus is on a sidebar item for either a graph or report, Ctrl-Shift-Tab puts focus on the two arrows to the left of 'My Finances'.

Hmm, this is kinda interesting. Its working for me.
Mac Instructions: Use cmd+F to focus the search bar, then use shift+tab (only once) to cycle focus backwards to the My Accounts drop down. Then press spacebar to drop down that menu.
The search bar is outlined in blue when focus is on it, but the My Accounts menu or up/down arrows does not appear highlighted when in focus. When you move focus forwards using tab, next comes the New Transaction button, but there are 3 mystery tabs before it gets to the balance bar. The 3 mystery tabs do not react to spacebar presses. I wonder if one of those tab presses is supposed to gain focus on the final transaction in the register?
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I feel like this is a bug, should I post this to the bug forum?

Hi Kieran,
Similar situation here in Windows, Ctrl-F is the keyboard shorcut to 'Find...' (the Search field), then Shift-Tab sends focus to the up/down arrows. In Windows the up/down arrows receive a very slight rectangle around them when they have focus.

Hey all,
So I believe the reasoning for closing this ticket was that with the implementation of the sidebar it became far easier to navigate directly to both the homepage and account registers with a single click. There is not an "official" keyboard shortcut, although using Windows I can confirm that the Ctrl+F, Shift+Tab, Spacebar combo works for me. I'm curious if you all think that this keyboard shortcut meets a requirement that the side bar doesn't, and if so what. This will help us to better understand what if/how to implement this suggestion.

Oh okay. I feel that I can work faster using keyboard shortcuts when possible. I feel that keyboard shortcuts maximize efficiency compared to a mouse.
I think I would be closer to mouse free within MD if I could navigate between accounts with the keyboard.
I never have used the sidebar before, so I made it visible to check it out. This sidebar feature is niiiiiice. I should have starting using this sooner!
I would like to change my request to please make a shortcut to focus the sidebar and be able to navigate using the up & down keys. Right now, if an item is highlighted in the sidebar, you can only move within its category (banks, credit cards, investments, etc).
Does this help? I hope I am not being a pain. Thanks for your time.

Hi Angie,
Ctrl+F, Shift+Tab, Spacebar is a sufficient enough shortcut to 'My Finances' for my purposes. For me, it was more of a fun little puzzle to figure out than anything else. As you say, the sidebar sufficiently covers navigation.

Tinkering around with getting focus onto the sidebar. I find that, depending on where the focus currently lies, either Ctrl-Tab-Tab or Ctrl-Tab-Tab-Tab, will eventually move focus to the sidebar.
As you've already discovered, the arrow keys will only navigate through the items listed under the current heading. (Banks, Credit Cards, Graphs & Reports, etc) However, typing the first letter of the desired item in the sidebar can move focus beyond the current heading to that item.

@kmnugent I can only move down the list. No way to move upwards.

I've logged the request for a more concise hotkey to focus on the sidebar, and for better keyboard navigation within the sidebar. I too like to most of my navigation with the keyboard, so this would be of great help to me as well. I would like to point out, however, that Kevin's not a Moneydance staff member who is brushing you off, he's a Moneydance user who is sharing the tools and workarounds he's discovered using the program. I hope this clarifies things, and I've attached the feature request ticket to this thread. You'll be automatically notified when there are updates on this feature.
