Adding Securities
Securities are units of value that can be aggregated and tracked in investment accounts.
Examples of securities include stocks, mutual funds and bonds.
All securities are recorded relative to your base currency but can be displayed relative to any other currency.
Creating a New Security -
You can add a new security by navigating to Tools > Securities.
Then select the +
button at the bottom left of the window.
There are a number of fields you will need to enter:
Security ID
A unique identifier of the security within Moneydance.
This is not something that has any existence outside of Moneydance.
Security Name
The name of the security.
Ticker Symbol
Enter the symbol for the stock.
Moneydance can access stock information from -
IEX Trading, Alphavantage, TD Ameritrade and Yahoo! Finance USA.
Price
This value can be changed later via the "Security History" window
To do this, choose Tools > Securities, then double-click on the Security name.
Alternatively, you can use an extension that automatically updates the prices.
Value Prefix and Suffix
By default, holdings are measured in shares as in equity holding.
If you have some other kind of denomination for your holdings (such as contract for options) you can enter them here either as a prefix or a suffix to the price per unit of the security.
Decimals
Be sure to enter the same number of decimal spaces that are used in your broker's share accounting.
In most cases this will be 2, although some use 4 or 6.
Associating the Security with an Investment Account -
Once you have created the security, you need to associate it with an investment account.
To do this, select the account and access the Securities Detail view.
Then look for the security functions, and select the “Add Security” button.
Select the newly created security from the drop-down list at the very top of the window.
Then fill out the rest of the security information below.
Amend the "Type" field to identify the security as a stock, bond, CD etc.
Most of this information is used for identification purposes and is not used in calculations within Moneydance.
When you're done, press OK.
The security will then be available for use within the specified investment account.
Creating and Associating a Security from within the Account -
You can also create a new security from within an Investment account directly.
To do this, select the relevant Investment account and access the Securities Detail view.
Then look for the security functions, and select the “Add Security” button.
Select the "New Security" button at the top right of the window.
Then complete the fields (detailed at the top of the article).
When you're done, press OK.
You'll then be taken back to the previous window, with the new security now displayed in the drop-down menu at the very top.
Then fill out the rest of the security information below, including the security "Type".
Most of this information is used for identification purposes and is not used in calculations within Moneydance.
When you're done entering the security details, press OK.
When creating a security using this method, the security is automatically associated with the investment account you are currently working in.
The security will then be available for use within the investment account you're using.
