"Newer" Budget Format
You should create your budget.
Then close the Budget Manager window.
Select the budget in the left side bar (below your accounts).
This will display the budget register where you can view and edit your budget items.
Budget Categories -
Using the Newer budget format, all categories within your data file are included in the budget.
All of your categories are displayed on the left.
Your categories are listed alphabetically.
The income categories are listed first (displaying a green icon)
The expense categories are listed below (displaying a red icon)
Budget Amounts -
Three columns will be displayed - previous interval, current interval, and upcoming interval.
e.g. If you use a Monthly budget, you'll see last month, this month and next month.
The centre column is the current interval.
This is the active time period being budgeted for (e.g. this month).
Within this column, you'll see two columns of numbers -
-
The left number is the amount currently assigned to the category (during the specified period).
-
The right number is the amount you have budgeted for the category.
The number will be 0 if you haven't budgeted anything for that category.
To set a budget amount, click the number on the right.
Then enter the amount that you want to budget for that category (during the specified period).
You can easily set your budget based on past spending.
To do this, click on the current interval or upcoming interval heading
Then select one of the following options -
Copy and rollover previous period
This sets the budget for the period as the sum of the last period’s budget plus the difference between the previous periods spending and budget.
e.g. If the last periods grocery budget was $200 and you spent $150, this periods grocery budget will be $250.
Copy previous period
This sets the budget for the perdiod as the last periods budget.
e.g. If last periods grocery budget was $200, this period’s grocery budget will be $200, regardless of your spending in the previous period.
Use actual spending from previous period
This sets the budget for the period as the amount spent during the last budgeting period.
e.g. If the last periods grocery budget was $200 and you spent $150, this period’s grocery budget would be $150.
