Create, Edit or Delete Currencies
Moneydance was designed to provide a way to deal with multiple currencies in an easy and flexible manner.
By default a new Moneydance data file contains several dozen currencies making it easy for you to get started with Moneydance, or simply to track spending on a trip out of your home country.
Create a Currency -
To view the list of all currencies in your data file, navigate to Tools > Currencies.
To add a new currency, click the + button at the bottom left.
Enter the currency details in the following fields -
Currency ID
This is the standard, three-letter identifier for the currency
For example, USD, GBP or EUR
Currency Name
The name of the currency
For example, US Dollar, or British Pound
Value Prefix and Suffix
These are letters or symbols that are displayed before or after the currency's numerical value.
If this isn't required, you can leave these fields blank
Max. Decimal Places
Enter the number of decimal places used in your currency.
In most cases this will be 2
You can even make up your own currencies, as long as the "Currency ID" (the standard, three-letter identifier for currencies such as USD, GBP or EUR) is unique.
You might want to make up your own currency if you would like to track something other than money (cryptocurrencies, gold bars, or jellybeans) using an account in Moneydance.
Edit a Currency -
To view the list of all currencies in your data file, navigate to Tools > Currencies.
To edit a currency, double-click on the currency name.
This will open a new window displaying the currency history.
Choose "Edit" at the top of the window to amend the currency details.
Delete a Currency -
To view the list of all currencies in your data file, navigate to Tools > Currencies.
To delete a currency highlight the currency name.
Then select the -
button at the bottom left.
You cannot delete a currency that is involved in any transactions in your data file.
Base Currency -
To change the Base Currency of your data file, navigate to Tools > Currencies.
Highlight the desired currency name.
Then click the “Set Base Currency” button (at the bottom right of the window).
This will change the base currency of your data file.
It will also change the default currency that's used for any new accounts or categories you create.
However, it will not change the currencies of any existing accounts and/or categories.
Updating Currencies -
To view the list of all currencies in your data file, navigate to Tools > Currencies.
Then double-click on the the currency’s name.
This will open a new window displaying the currency's current and historical exchange rates.
In this window, you can manually add/remove exchange rates.
You can also import a set of exchange rates, or clear all exchange rates.
To automatically update your currency history, you can install the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension.
